[UPDATE] Microsoft has now confirmed this promotion. Doom is now available to preorder from the Xbox Store for Xbox One, and doing so gets you free copies of the original Doom and Doom II, playable on Xbox One via backwards compatibility.

The original story is below.

While not confirmed at this point, it looks like Microsoft is planning to encourage people to preorder the new Doom on Xbox One by offering Doom 1 and Doom II as free games.

Someone on Reddit discovered that the new Doom was recently available to preorder for a short period of time from the Australian Xbox Store. Though it has since been removed, a cached version of the page shows that description mentions that orders come with backwards-compatible versions of Doom and Doom II (via Game Informer).

The existing XBLA versions of Doom and Doom II, which are already part of the Xbox One backwards compatibility program, sell for $5 each.

This wouldn't be the first time Bethesda has given away copies of older games as a preorder incentive, as the company offered Fallout 3 as a freebie for people who bought Fallout 4.

Bethesda is not the only publisher to do this, either, as Bandai Namco is giving away the backwards-compatible version of Dark Souls when you preorder Dark Souls III. Additionally, Square Enix gave away Just Cause 2 to entice people to preorder Just Cause 3 on Xbox One.

The new Doom arrives in May for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
