New Doctor Strange Backwards Trailers Have Fans Formulating New Theories

The gum Doctor Strange likes is going to come back in style.

Next month's Doctor Strange is sure to be a psychedelic, mind-bending adventure, and Marvel is trying to match that tone with its marketing. It posted the same trailer to social media twice, except one of them plays in reverse.

Both versions of the trailer feature voices played in reverse. The one that's played forwards mentions the word "Time" a lot and features all of the scenes in reverse. The rewound trailer, on the other hand, features the same scenes playing out normally and says various phrases including, "This is just the beginning." It's all very confusing, and it's best just to watch them yourself.

Some fans are speculating that these trailers hint towards the introduction of another Infinity Stone. Strange's amulet, the Eye of Agamotto, is believed to contain the Time Stone, which Strange has owned in the comics. The Time Stone can be used to manipulate time and causality, while those who master the use of it can affect the entire universe as they please.

If you'd rather see a more traditional movie trailer, you can watch its worldwide premiere or check out a TV spot that released last week. The TV spot mentions the Avengers and what their role is in relation to Strange and the people who use mystical forces to defend the world. Doctor Strange actor Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) confirmed that his character will appear in the upcoming Avengers: Infinity War.

Doctor Strange opens in theaters on November 4. It stars Cumberbatch, alongside Rachel McAdams (Spotlight), Tilda Swinton (Trainwreck), Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), and Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale). The movie is helmed by Scott Derrickson, who has written and directed many horror movies such as The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Deliver Us Unto Evil, and Sinister.
