New Diablo Game Project In Development, Blizzard Confirms

More Diablo action is on the way.

An unannounced Diablo project of some sort is officially in development, Blizzard has revealed. A job listing on the company's website confirms as much, although--this being a job posting and not a proper announcement--there aren't any real details about what to expect.

The job opening is for a dungeon artist on the Diablo franchise, but the game is listed as an "unannounced project." The description makes it clear upfront that this position will be working on something new: "The minions of Hell are growing stronger... We're working on a new, unannounced Diablo project."

The remainder of the post doesn't offer much else, although it sounds as if this new project won't dramatically deviate from the typical look of a Diablo game. "The ideal candidate works well in an environment of peers who are passionate about working on the dark gothic world of Diablo, making great games, killing millions of monsters and getting loot," it states.

Blizzard has not announced any new Diablo games to date, although this isn't the first job opening to suggest one might be in the works. Whether this new project is a full-on sequel like Diablo 4 or something else remains to be seen. But with little in the way of major content updates for Diablo III released in the past few years outside of the Rise of the Necromancer DLC, fans have been holding out hope that something new was in the works.

There's no indication of when we'll be hearing official details about the project. E3 2018 is right around the corner, but there's been no word that the company plans to unveil a new game there. We'll report back whenever we do hear more. Meanwhile, we're still waiting to hear about the rumored Diablo III for Switch.

Blizzard only has 2 options at this point to save the Diablo franchise from being another classic turned joke that they use the rights to milk money out of the characters in their growing list of moba games.

Option one. a reboot. get on unreal 4 engine and go full sandbox similar to conan exiles only with my dlc's. after thinking about it i realised that bliz north were limited by the tech of their time, and as creators they wanted to deliver the players a rich horror survival story line with rpg and character creation options on top of hack and slash fantasy action. the high 3rd person camera in 1 and 2 really let you be immersed in the action back in the day. but by today's standard if the same group was doing it again im willing to bet they would provably go full 3d in a sandbox genre of the same theme.

option 2. go back to daiblo 2 lod copy everything improve the visuals throw in a character customisation option keep the offline only options go back to the classic room/servers for online only make them larger. make a one huge game for diablo 1 2lod the bosses from 3 but not the abortion story on make it one massive diablo 2 esk reboot of the whole series following the story from 1 in tristram to the end of baal with the lessor evils being dlc packs as well as dlc for clone diablo and ubers.

and remove these features and never speak of them again because if they make it to another diablo game the franchise is officially dead.

1. the inability to teleport through walls.

2. the lack of any attribute allocation system.

3. the lack of any in dept skill tree

4. talent trees

.5 the auction house

6.the diablo 3 story line (yep i said it twice it was honestly so bad), how villainous are blizzard they kill Cain and give us a gender bender diablo.. truly sick individuals.

7.the weirdness online overlapping phases for multiplayer. just let us have rooms again ffs.

8. class weapon restriction.

9. any srot of soul bound items

10. blizzard game crossovers

i actually heard a rumour a while ago that blizzard were really disappointed that so many fans thought very little of d3 and that they wanted to make a new game and they were working closely with fans of 1 and 2 to create a new game that the fans could enjoy. but iv heard the same spiel from every game company that do sequels at some point.

what was so great about d2 lord of destruction was the freedom the gamers had over character building, not only could customer and find gear but they could divy out attributes for different builds and make different builds via the skill tree's for each class. and in the patch of d2 that added skill synergies this game hit a new level of fun and completely reinvented the game for players who were playing for a long time before this.

more than this with closed battlenet you could compete fairly with other players online or you could go to open battlenet where modding the game was its own reward. single player offline was also rewarding. to this day when my internet is down d2lod is my go to offline game (mostly because game creation companies don't add offline single player anymore) and i thought blizzards lack of offline was a betrayal of their fans in 3.

the last thing that made diablo 2lod so great was the unexpected bugs and features that made the game so repayable. like engima letting player teleport around, the prestige of collecting rare items that were difficult to get the numerous bugged items and the overall replay-ability of the game at high level.

i just don't think blizzard can do it to be honest. who ever was the team leader and the driving force behind this game knew what players wanted and how he could deliver it in a fun and addictive way. and it was clear to not only me that d3 devs just didn't understand it was like they had never played a diablo 2 game and they were just looking at images of daiblo 2 as reference for character models. because nothing about d3 resembled 1 and 2 in the slightest. even the rare items and unique items were a different colour. a witch doctor a demon hunter and a wizard and a monk??! how much of a try hard do you have to be that think you need to reinvent classes for a new game? couldn't you give assassins crossbows? a wizard is just a sorceress, the monk wasn't even Asian ffs the witch doctor wasn't a bad idea most people would have rather the necro straight up and the witch doctor as a dlc a Templar instead of a paladin? or a warrior? why did they need to invite a whole new class in the law. a templer is just a pally right? anyway my money on blizzard failing simply because they don't even have the remaining talent to launch another mmo and their last few games have been moba or moba'shooters and everyone knows that is were talent goes to die, making cheap moba's trying to flog off micro transactions to players that have video game commitment issues and only play games they can drop at a moments notice.

anyway d2 was my life for a few years and i still judge most games by the level of enjoyment and replayability of d2 and i really hope blizzard can go back to lord of destruction and figure out what was so great about this game because they spend millions of dollars on another piece of trash that players will buy and play a few times then hate on it. or at the very list take the theme to another genre that is hot atm and cant fail. the unreal4 sandbox.

Blizzard has not faied to deliver thus far with all things Diablo. Ok...so d3 had a shady launched but they totally fixed it with the 2.0 update. I like this company because they seem to take their time and do things right. Even today I enjoy playing diablo and overwatch. I also had my time of fun on WoW “back in the day” but I had to put that down due to addiction issues.

With fundamentals taken from Diablo III it will not satisfy gamers. They have to go back to roots and learn from Diablo II.

As long as it isn't garbage like Diablo 3 (Diablocraft), I'll be looking forward to it. I hope they learned their lesson. D3 did not feel like a Diablo game at all. It was Warcraft with a Diablo theme. Above all else, the atmosphere was the worst part. As long as they fix that, it will at least be playable. Don't get me wrong, there were a couple of improvements. I liked the concept of transmogrification and being able to change skills mid game. That way you don't feel like you had to start a new game if you reach hell or nightmare and discover that you didn't allocate your skill points properly... but that's pretty much it. A few game mechanic improvements but everything else was a step down.

The first two had elements to the game where you really felt like you were in an evil place. I didn't like the mechanics of the first game but it without question was the best at creating an "evil environment." The whole game was dark and moody. I can't think of a single part of D3 that had an environment similar to the D1 cathedral or Mephisto's Durance of Hate from D2 (or the rogue monastery for that matter). The original Diablo even set the tone from the very beginning with the feeling you get in Tristram. Seeing as how they made a joke about the warm and fuzzy environment of D3, it gives me some level of hope for D4.

Diablo 3 has a similar problem to Deus Ex: Invisible War. They would have been great stand alone games but they were made as sequels to legendary franchises and didn't live up to the expectations.

I did not play the first two, but I really liked the third. However, will it take a few years of rebalancing to make it fun? Anyways, I guess we are years away from release....

@kadin_kai: play the first two. I guarantee it will change your perspective. Aside from the graphics and a few game mechanic improvements, the first two were better in almost every way imaginable.

with legendary franchises like Diablo, you really have to put some serious hours into all of them before making an assessment as to which is best. I have logged so many hours into D2. I don't even want to look at the number because it will show that I have no life.

I still play D3. I don't think it was terrible. It just wasn't as good as the first two.

I'm still bitter about D3's release. I got two lvl 60 characters and was immensely disappointed after likely playing over 1,000 hours on D2:LoD. Can someone explain to me (or direct me to something) what has changed in D3 since its release that has salvaged it? And will I need to spend more money in order to enjoy that content?

Diablo 1 was the pinnacle of the franchise. Diablo 2 was when it began to slide away from its roots. Diablo 3 at the beginning was a travesty.

I don't doubt Diablo 4 will have loot boxes and cash shops and other garbage designed to milk you dry. Though, if we're lucky, they will have learned a lesson about a cash auction house.

No rush... Go old-Blizzard, and don't release something like early-D3 this time. More like D3 as it is now, plus cheat protection / signed-equipment.

An expansion to Diablo 3 or diablo 4 would be great right now. Diablo 3 was great to me so I'm looking forward to the sequel.

I feel like they should do a remaster for Diablo 2 and bring it to consoles as well. Id play it since i never got the chance.

I still think the First Diablo is BY FAR, the best entry in the series. Best atmosphere, best sound track, best characters, it's simple, it's chalenging, it's fun. The ONLY problem with it is that it is short.

I still play D1 with friends from time to time, we always get really hooked in the game when we start playing it. We tried both Diablo 2 and 3, and........ sorry, we did note have that much fun.

I still think RUNNING ruined diablo. In diablo 1 we walked around in a fight pose, shields up, sword in hands, with tense music and tense enviroments all the time, behind every corner we expected to see death in the hands of a mob of enemies or a special overpowered monster. It is a tense game all the time.

But in diablo 2 and 3 this doesn't happen. What happens is a RACE between us to see who stomps more enemies, faster. We race through level after level murdering hordes of enemies, and There is no tension in that! After less than an hour everyone was bored of playing Diablo 2 (I won't even talk about diablo3).

Compare fighting andariel in the first act if diablo 2 with facing the butcher on the second level of diablo 1. We stomped andariel, acctually we competed to see who could do more damage to it.... The butcher on diablo 1, on the other hand, requires careful planning and strategy to face, that or we have to do at least 1 more level of the dungeons before comming back to face him and still risk getting slaughtered.

To this day, no game came close to diablo 1 in many aspects.

Btw I still love the simplicity of not having to deal with skill threes and other complicated stuff that adds little to the game other forcing you to learn complicated systems.

I'd rather deal with distributing points to simple general skills than working with a complex skill three.

@BlackOmegaTM: IMO, for most Blizzard games, you can't have a relevant opinion on "what the best game is" until you've played hundreds of hours of each game and know the systems and environments by heart.

I think everyone agrees that Diablo 2 is unrivaled.

Hard to get too excited after Diablo 3. What I want is Warcraft 4 but the problem is I want the blizzard that created Warcraft 2 to make it. I don't think the blizzard of today can make a great game like that. The loot crates and garbage like that have really ruined gaming.

As a once diehard fan of D2, I put about ~900 hrs. into D3. Today, I'd take D2 over D3 any day. In fact, I'm looking forward to playing the upcoming the D2 ladder reset. As a fan of the Diablo franchise, I'm hopeful for the next installment.

@WhoIsTheDrizzle: Talk about being negative just for the sake of it! Why would they need a dungeon artist in a Diablo card game? If it's not Diablo 4, it's an expension.

Either way, I don't really care. As much as I love Blizzard, I never cared for Diablo. But for those who do, I hope it's something you want!

When Diablo 3 first came out I honestly wasn't impressed. Torchlight 2 gave me everything I wanted and more. But then it seems Diablo took on some of those characteristics and it turned into a really enjoyable experiences.

Having said that, MAN i wish i could get a Torchlight 3 and 2 for XB1/PS stores.

@snugglebear: Don't Agree. Torchlight Story sucks, It does not has a good atmosphere.

Diablo3 Class design is great. It's fighting system with tons of mobs and spells are great.

It lack some feeling and repeatability.

Also when I came back to lay Diablo2 It's talent system looks very bad today.

But generally D2 was much better than D3
