New Darksiders Game To Be Revealed At E3 2019, It Seems

The franchise is apparently going "in a fresh direction."

Darksiders 3 didn't go over well at launch, with our reviewer scoring the game a 4/10 back in November 2018. Despite the lackluster reception here and with other reviewers, the latest installment is certainly not the last in the action-adventure franchise. According to the E3 Coliseum, a new Darksiders game will be revealed during an E3 panel.

Called Darksiders: Action Adventure Evolved, the panel is set to address "the inception of the Darksiders universe and where it's headed next." It's scheduled for Thursday, June 13 from 10:30 - 11 AM PT. While there are no concrete details about what to expect from the panel, the discussion will unveil the "fresh direction" the franchise is headed and coincides with the reveal of a brand new Darksiders title. The official panel description is below.

Now Playing: E3 2019: What We Expect To See At The Event

"A discussion about the inception of the Darksiders universe and where it's headed next. This panel will coincide with the E3 2019 unveil of a brand new Darksiders game that takes the franchise in a fresh direction. This is a panel discussion about the art and business of creating and maintaining an action adventure franchise rich in-game and corporate lore."

In our Darksiders 3 review, we said, "There are remnants of a good game here, buried within the vivacious combos of a combat style this game doesn't want to embrace. Unfortunately, it's buried far too deep to ever salvage."

E3 2019 starts on Saturday, June 8 with the EA Play livestream kicking off the convention. Be sure to check out the schedule to see all the latest announcements and game reveals.

I do have to say that's a little unfair for the people who bought Darksiders 3 purely because THQN said 100k sales would be enough for a sequel. I'm sure the people who bought it purely for that reason did so they could see how the story concludes NOT to fund a completely different game that takes the franchise in an entirely new direction.

it's amazing that a game that is supposedly so bad never goes down in price. I mean, it's selling at a higher price than RDR2, Division 2, KH3, etc.

@batusai4ever: It's on sale right now for $30. That's a fair price for it. About 20 hours of gameplay plus a little extra just to show THQ appreciation for giving the game a chance and for showing the team gratitude for putting up a decent effort on such a tiny budget. Really, it's quite impressive what they were able to do when it's all said and done.

@rarerichz30: Oh, it sucked...at first. But then it was fixed. The point is that it was never as sucky as the truly sucky games out there. Frankly, it's no better or worse than Darksiders 2 when all is said and done. D2 had far worse glitches than D3, save destroying glitches, actually, and there are TWO entire regions that are unfinished in D2. You can't even tell which area was cut in D3.

@rarerichz30: So, people have to like it because you did?

I'm glad that you enjoyed it. Personally, I thought it really sucked, but that doesn't make my opinion more valid than yours, or your opinion more valid than mine.

Grow up.

@aross2004: His opinion may not be more valid than yours, but an opinion that revolves around an argument of "it really sucks because I thought everything was meh" is much less respectable, and harder to take seriously, than one that is based on actual facts and evidence ESPECIALLY when "I don't like it" leads to a score equivalent to truly atrocious games like Fallout 76 or Anthem. Tell me it sucks because glitches in the later stages of the game can cause multiple freezes that make certain locations impossible to enter, not because the monsters kicked your ass at the beginning of the game. Tell me the graphics suck because of the constant framerate crashes in certain areas, not because the otherwise perfectly gorgeous art is not "Darksiders" enough for you. Tell me the world sucks because it's too easy to find every upgrade in one playthrough, not because subway tunnels aren't fantastic enough for you.

Again, I know this looks like I'm specifically attacking you, but that's not my intent. You just so happen to be using language I can work with. I'm really talking about the general attitude towards the game, not yours specifically.

@playstationzone: So you're going to scream and pout like a child? Good to know.
Saints row games aren't very good. But they're definitely rip offs from GTA.
And Red Faction games, at least the newer ones, have all wholly sucked in their entirety.

Darksiders 1+2 was awesome. Dark Zelda. Why the hell did they choose to make Darksiders 3 like they did is beyond me. I wanted more of what made Darksiders what it was, not Dark Souls because I have Dark Souls 1-3 for that. Now they want to take it in a fresh direction. I'm guessing up my pooper (in a bad way). Sigh.

I think it'll be an action-adventure shooter, using Strife as the main character since he has a gun. Either 1st person, like Halo (Combat Evolved -> Action Adventure Evolved?) or 3rd person style like Gears. A non linear game with single and/or (just) multi-player components.

Maybe even team up with the other riders (War and Death also had guns borrowed from Strife... give one to Fury also and call it a squad).

I'm a big fan of the first 2 games.

I think Darksiders 3 was ok too. I also have to give it a big "Thanks" for letting me experience a glimmer of the punishing combat that BorneSouls use, which i've been avoiding exactly for that reason. And it let me learn the basics in an environment derived from 2 games that i love, which made me push forward, only to see the game through to the end. (after finishing it, i went ahead and bought Bloodborne GOTY... and loved every piece of it, even finished it twice).

BUT, in spite of all that, i still think Darksiders 3 wasn't made in the same spirit as the first 2 games, they drifted away from that good formula.

I hope their "fresh" direction doesn't put the nails in this franchise's coffin.

It better not be a Battle Royal based or a First Person Mode.....cuz if it is then that won't be DarkSiders.

I feel they purposely ruined DS3 just to say the fans didn't want a 3rd person action game.

@johnny0779: Er...no, they didn't purposely ruin the game. THQ went belly up and nobody cared to do a third game after what happened with the second. When they did, it was done with a very low budget. The fact they were even willing to try, and did what they did with so little, is impressive.

DS3 was, IMO, pretty poor. This new title sounds like one of those freemium mobile games that try to bilk you out of every penny you've got with MTX.

REALLY sounds like a mobile game, unfortunately. I would really love to see the original storyline come to a conclusion before they start making weird spinoffs.

@Yomigaeru: Soon is not necessarily a problem. THQ Nordic acquired many franchises, plus they declared a few weeks back that they have a ton of games in development (what was it, 80 something?). So it stands to reason they have a lot of teams. It remains to be seen though, just how good/bad this one is.

@Shinnok789: To be fair, it has been legally determined that drawing pictures on a napkin is "development", so I doubt they have that many teams. Just a whole lot of game in planning stages and a few that actually are being developed.

Huge fan of Darksiders and I feel 3 got a bad rap. An announcement this close to D3 gives me a mobile game vibe.

@timothyss10: I can only hope it's the only way possible to get all four horsemen into a single game. That's forgivable if the goal is to get them all in one game for an epic final conclusion.

Man did I love the second game for its Zelda/God of War feel. I skipped out on Darksiders 3 though due to the unnecessary Dark Soul-inspired combat system.

@cboye18: Dark Souls combat? Have you ever played Dark Souls? They're not remotely similar. There are still combos and flashy moves and all of that stuff, you just can't wade recklessly into a group of enemies anymore...for about 15 levels. Then you get OP and it's no problem.

You guys really need to actually try the game.

@fanboyman: I hope it is, 1 and 2 were great, third not so much and quite frankly I don't want to play as the last horseman. just not interested in a shooter. I hope they lets us pick our horseman and co-op in a big open world.

The review sucked. Putting it in the same class as Fallout 76 or Anthem is mind boggling. It only took one patch to fix most of DS3's problems. 76 and Anthem still don't work months and months later.

The game was actually pretty well received. I don't want them to push the series in a new direction until they resolve the ongoing storyline.

@aross2004: Disagree. The Dark Souls style worked just fine. Never cared for all the momentum halting puzzles (which are still in DS3, just not so many). There was nothing really wrong with the game aside from the usual glitches and stuff that EVERY AAA game has these days but for some reason is only worth a single point off their scores. A single patch resolved most of the problems, and there have been a lot more since then, but the review came before any of those patches.

@Barighm: Glad you liked it.

It wasn't the initial rough state of the game that turned me off, I'm pretty much used to that nowadays. It just didn't at all feel like Darksiders to me, it felt like it was trying to be something else.

Everything also just felt very uninspired. The graphics were meh, the level design was meh and the story was meh.

@aross2004: I didn't say I liked it. I said there wasn't really anything wrong with it and I'm not sure where all this hate is coming from. Bugs? Yeah, sure, there were bugs, but a lot of complaints around the game don't really mention the glitches which is weird. Obviously it was more Souls and level exploration than unstoppable killer horseman solving puzzles (even though there were puzzles and lots of baddies to fight), but that's not automatically a bad thing.

Not sure why you'd think the graphics are bad. They look fine aside from the framerate issues later (again, patched). Level design was fine, too. So many nooks and crannies leading to secrets and they all lead back into each other or take you to entire hidden areas. Your other points are subjective, so no comment.

@aross2004: I can see how you think I'm arguing with you, but I'm not. I'm just confused.

But you haven't addressed my initial point that nobody has pointed out any REAL problem with the game aside from the glitches. Just a lot of purely subjective stuff, or stuff that is highly contradictory. The combat is like Dark Souls? Wha...? Since when can you perform tons of combos and juggle monsters in Dark Souls?

"It doesn't FEEL right" is the best summation of all the criticism I see out there, but it's not remotely meaningful or valid. Frankly, it sounds like the lot of Darksiders fans are just pissy in the same way old school Resident Evil fans are illogically hateful of RE4.

@Barighm: The game was definitely rushed, but good after patches (at least on PC). Shame that publishers continue these stupid practices and it ends up hurting games that don't deserve a bad score.

@BassMan: You can really feel when a game is rushed, and I didn't get that sense in Darksiders 3 aside from being unpolished. Every location felt complete and whole. I didn't feel shortchanged in any way save for a lack of the celestial realm. Figured I'd have to at least climb Pride's tower to reach her, but that was not a big deal. Kinda expected a DLC that focused on Strife, though.
