Sega today announced Crazy Taxi: City Rush, a new installment in the over-the-top driving series developed by Crazy Taxi creator Kenji Kanno exclusively for iOS and Android devices.

Crazy Taxi: City Rush promises to "reimagine" the Crazy Taxi series and capture the spirit of the franchise with one-touch controls. The free-to-play game will release globally later this year.

"We are delivering a truly fun game that captures everything our fans love about the original and infusing it with several new features to create an even more fantastic and memorable experience," Kanno said in a statement.

You can check out some images and a trailer for Crazy Taxi: City Rush below.

Here's everything we know about Crazy Taxi: City Rush:

  • Coming this year to iOS and Android devices
  • Free-to-play
  • You'll swipe to change lanes and navigate corners
  • It has an "all-new big city setting"
  • You can customize your cab to increase its "power and visual appeal"
  • It has Facebook integration
  • Features portrait and landscape modes
  • Offers a variety of missions and "special challenges"

Crazy Taxi: City Rush will likely be supported by microtransactions, but Sega made no mention of specific details today.

Crazy Taxi fans will no doubt recall that the original had a fantastic soundtrack featuring music from Bad Religion and The Offspring. Sega did not mention a soundtrack today, but said that you'll be able to listen to music from your personal library (so if you're like me, you already have The Offspring and Bad Religion ready to go).

Finally, as a "thank you" to fans, Sega has made the original Crazy Taxi free to download on iTunes and Google Play, though the Android version appears to be missing right now.

Crazy Taxi: City Rush was developed by Hardlight Studios, the Sega-owned studio that created mobile games Sonic Dash and Sonic Jump.
