New Console Launches Could Be "Imminent," GameStop Exec Says

"We are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches."

Speaking today at the GameStop Investor/Analyst Day briefing in Texas, COO Tony Bartel commented on the rumors about new PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, saying the launch of at least some of these "seem[s] imminent." The executive stressed that GameStop has not yet built the consoles, and virtual reality platforms, into its earnings projections, but explained that they represent areas of potential growth for the company.

No Caption Provided

"Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent," Bartel said.

A recent Wall Street Journal report claimed that Sony would announce a new, more powerful PlayStation 4 before October. It's also rumored that Nintendo will launch its new system, the NX, as early as the end of this year, which could qualify as "imminent." Microsoft, too, has spoken about the possibility of a new Xbox, though no timing for its release has been tipped, officially or otherwise.

New hardware launches would theoretically be a boon for GameStop, so it's not that surprising to hear Bartel speak enthusiastically about them.

Another slide shown during the event put a dollar amount to the launch of new consoles and VR over the coming years. If GameStop has a 33 percent share of new $15 billion console launch, GameStop would potentially make $5 billion in sales. Assuming the VR market is $15 billion by 2019 and that GameStop holds 20 percent, it would generate $3 billion in sales.

This is only a projection. GameStop management stressed it's not modeling anything in terms of earnings projections for new console launches and VR.

In a Q&A session, an analyst asked if the "new console" comments were related to the NX or other consoles, GameStop executives said they would not be commenting further. Those types of announcements will come from platform-holders. Later during the event, in a segment unrelated to new console launches, management teased, "As usual, we know more than we can share."

No Caption Provided

Also during the presentation, Bartel said "the expectations are very big" for virtual reality devices such as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. He said he's seen numerous reports about the VR market, and while they have varied, all of them conclude that the industry will be a multi-billion dollar business.

GameStop will sell PlayStation VR and is currently taking preorders for it, while discussions with Oculus and HTC are ongoing to offer their devices in-store.

The GameStop Investor Day briefings are happening throughout the afternoon; check back later today for more.

Update: This post has been updated to more accurately attribute GameStop's quotes about new console launches.

With the new generation of graphics cards on the horizon in Nvidia Pascal and whatever AMD have in store this gen of consoles is going to look even more aged, especially as they were arguably under spec'd in the first place compared to what was available at the time on the PC.

It's going to be harder to have multi-format releases that the publishers want if the console versions are substantially sub-par to the PC ones, throw VR in the mix and it looks more and more like an update is in order.

@brande77: Well, I believe that this happened because here two things got together:

1) People reads the headline and rush o comment without reading the full things (or at least a bit of it)

2) Eddie, like he always does, purposely made a click-bait headline so people would do precisely that and generate traffic.

The way I see it.

If only companies like Gamestop had that information for real.....

Now if you read this information as it should be, it goes on about "what if...". The last slide basically says: What if Gamestop has a 33% marketshare and there would be new console launches? Then we would sell for over 5 billion and you, the shareholder, would get loads of money...

In the end this is nothing more then a salespitch. So do not take this in any shape or form as them saying there will be a next generation this or next year.

I've been hearing about this for a while now, I dismissed it as BS from certain idiot YouTubers, assuming that while it might be possible, it wouldn't be practical. I was always under the impression that console games ran as well as they did on the limited hardware, because they where designed and optimised for that specific hardware. Are you not essentially adding an entirely new platform and thus driving up the cost of production for any given game. I find it hard to believe developers would go for this. More than that, are you not in danger of alienating those early adopters of your original console and thus guaranteeing they won't buy from you in the future.

@UltimateBastard: You wrong.

Also, no such thing alienating your clients, its not like you have hundreds of choices, a console gamer will buy a console when he sees a game he wants to play.

No one going to change their console brand if the alternative is crappier graphics, thats how people work.

@Benny_a: Mate, what do you mean there's no such thing as alienating your customers, what do you think happened to xb1 this generation. At their unveiling show, it was obvious that they where more interested in widening their audience and making more money, than catering to their current fan base, they basically went on about the xb1 like it was a family multi-media centre rather than a dedicated gaming console. They also made a number of other announcements that people weren't to happy with, in the end they did a complete U-turn on a lot of these decisions, but the damage was done, they had "Alienated their customers" and all this long before the average console gamer knew anything about how the hardware would effect its graphics. And to be honest when I was saying in the future, I meant when it comes to the next generation, xbox have already basically guaranteed they are not upgrading their console, at least not in the main hardware department and doubt sony will either.

@UltimateBastard: You right about what happened, but it had zero effect on MS sales.

1. Most gamers are not fanboys, they buy the best console, right now its PS4, 1080p vs 900p, 1080p wins every time.

2. As far as sales go, Microsoft said that X1 sales faster then X360, its not selling as much as PS4 but better then what they sold last gen!

3.Going digital or taking away features are clear negatives: Releasing a BETTER hardware is a clear positive, the only minus here is those jealous people that cant stand when someone has something better then they do, because game-wise PS4 wont have any effect on their game quality, its like one gamer has 980Ti and another has 970, they play the same game, the one with 980Ti can do it in higher resolution and better graphics.

They do realize the definition of imminent right?

As in quickly approaching, right around the corner kind of thing?

We aren't even a full 3 years since PS4 and Xbox One's release and we're apparently already getting new consoles?

@rosinmonkekyx17: For one they are taking about new consoles, not a new generation of consoles. It is expected that slim versions of the consoles will be announced at E3 and released later this year. Nintendo is also rumoured to release the NX at the end of this year and then there is the rumoured PS4K, which despite popular albeit probably delusional opinions of it playing games at 4k is probably just a PS4 slim with 4k media player which I would also expect to see announced at E3 for a release later this year, all 3 of which could be classified as imminent.

"some of which seem imminent", Looks pretty clearly to me like he is referring to multiple things being imminent between both VR and consoles. Besides on top of VR and the NX, its pretty reasonable to also assume we will be getting slim versions of the consoles announced at E3 this year all of which can be included as imminent. We already know Microsoft has 2 new consoles versions to show off, probably a slim version and some 'pro' version with larger HD, lower power consumption or something along those lines.

@ACMC85:

Because they don't want to go the way of Blockbuster or other physical-media-only retailers.

Because they already have a digital marketplace.

Because as with the given examples, even 33% of $15 billion in sales = $5 billion for GameStop.

Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, PSVR, NX - all "imminent" "consoles" coming in 2016-2017.

Does not confirm PS4.5 or XBO.5. No matter what, GameStop has to follow certain NDAs if they have any knowledge of any potential unannounced hardware.

It's possible the PS4/XBO console generation will end after a 5-year cycle as opposed to the 8 year cycle of PS3/XB360. Which means we're already halfway through this generation. Time will tell. This year's shows (E3, PAX, etc) are going to be interesting.

@Razor10000:
I know at least Xbox One (& all Windows 10 systems) is getting HDR support later this year.
HDR-TVs for normal consumers are coming out spring 2017, some maybe a bit earlier according to developers at GDC.
The customer adaption rate is expected to be much faster than "4K".

Yeah, that pretty much confirms their existence. A GS executive wouldn't say something like that unless they've been told the new consoles are coming.

I still think the PS4.5 will be a Slim model with the two unlocked graphics cores and a bit of overclocking.

@UltimateBastard: Not new games for sue, you wont be playing DS3 FHD stable 60FPS, maybe on LOW settings.

Of course thats why PC rules, you can choose your setting and choose graphics vs FPS, something you cant do on console.

Actually if your smart, getting a new GPU every time it comes out as soon as it comes out is very economical, all you need is to keep the BOX of your old one, clean it so it wont have any dust, scratches and will look like new, pack it in, sell it and then just add the difference.

If you smart you can get a new top of the line GPU for 150$, thats 150$ every 12-18 months. Not thats expensive.

1. Dont know anything about any peasantry FHD: 4K gamer here and i cant get 60FPS on overclocked 980Ti, 6-Core Haswell @ 4.5Ghz,32GB DDR4, separate steam only 750Gb SSD (Win10 is also on separate SSD).

2. Please dont lie, I can google for benchmarks, 780 (non ti) does 57FPS at FHD resolution and its not that old of a card: last gen

You cant get any higher then that FHD thou

@Benny_a: nah I can assure you, it never drops below 60fps it is overclocked however. You'll also see the 680 running there max at 47fps, kinda proves my original comment. For the record I have 980ti in my own rig, and it's not enough on its own for proper 4K gaming, so I call bs on that. You also realise what you sound like, right?

@Barighm: Only if you are buying the most DEMANDING games on the market and or early access games, most games will run fairly decent on older hardware, just as long as the hardware is not REALLY old. At this point i would partially have to disagree with you, console cycles from now on are possibly going to be shorter instead of so damn long, and the line between consoles and Desktop PC's is blurring.
