New Console Launches Could Be "Imminent," GameStop Exec Says

"We are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches."

Speaking today at the GameStop Investor/Analyst Day briefing in Texas, COO Tony Bartel commented on the rumors about new PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles, saying the launch of at least some of these "seem[s] imminent." The executive stressed that GameStop has not yet built the consoles, and virtual reality platforms, into its earnings projections, but explained that they represent areas of potential growth for the company.

No Caption Provided

"Although we have not modeled extensive growth for new innovation in this presentation, we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent," Bartel said.

A recent Wall Street Journal report claimed that Sony would announce a new, more powerful PlayStation 4 before October. It's also rumored that Nintendo will launch its new system, the NX, as early as the end of this year, which could qualify as "imminent." Microsoft, too, has spoken about the possibility of a new Xbox, though no timing for its release has been tipped, officially or otherwise.

New hardware launches would theoretically be a boon for GameStop, so it's not that surprising to hear Bartel speak enthusiastically about them.

Another slide shown during the event put a dollar amount to the launch of new consoles and VR over the coming years. If GameStop has a 33 percent share of new $15 billion console launch, GameStop would potentially make $5 billion in sales. Assuming the VR market is $15 billion by 2019 and that GameStop holds 20 percent, it would generate $3 billion in sales.

This is only a projection. GameStop management stressed it's not modeling anything in terms of earnings projections for new console launches and VR.

In a Q&A session, an analyst asked if the "new console" comments were related to the NX or other consoles, GameStop executives said they would not be commenting further. Those types of announcements will come from platform-holders. Later during the event, in a segment unrelated to new console launches, management teased, "As usual, we know more than we can share."

No Caption Provided

Also during the presentation, Bartel said "the expectations are very big" for virtual reality devices such as PlayStation VR, Oculus Rift, and HTC Vive. He said he's seen numerous reports about the VR market, and while they have varied, all of them conclude that the industry will be a multi-billion dollar business.

GameStop will sell PlayStation VR and is currently taking preorders for it, while discussions with Oculus and HTC are ongoing to offer their devices in-store.

The GameStop Investor Day briefings are happening throughout the afternoon; check back later today for more.

Update: This post has been updated to more accurately attribute GameStop's quotes about new console launches.

ugh just stop it just stop it with all this console releases when they are just fine as they are. If people want VR then get them to build there own systems for vr. Heck im switching back to PC gaming next month once I get my SSDS and replace my faulty power supply in a few weeks.

@dentalen: Dude, the last gen lasted 10 years. The previous cycle was once every 5 years. It's no big deal.

@Barighm: Xbox original--Xbox 360=4 years

Xbox 360--Xbox One=8 years

PS1--PS2=6 years

PS2--PS3=6 years

PS3--PS4=7 years

We're not even 3 years into PS4 or Xbox One and they're going to announce the next generation? Are you kidding me?

@rosinmonkekyx17:

At the time the ps4 and xb1 came out, they were basically 1-3 years late on the cycle, as shown in what you posted. And with inferior hardware (for that time, that same hardware would have been just fine those 1 to 3 years earlier) . If they had released them earlier instead of milking the current systems, the upgrade now would be much more trivial. So sadly and rightfully so, some consolers will be upset.

But it's still not going to be a huge upgrade, at most you'll see 4k video playback, vr at the lower res and effects for 90fps, and full 1080p60 gaming. 1080p scales well to 4k , so it'll still look good on 4k tvs, just not run at 4k.

EXACTLY. this is the part that everyone seems to have problems understanding even though it actually quite simple

Remember when the 360 could oly outpud HD over component cables maxed out at 1080i due to lack of an HDMI port?

MS released a newer revision with HDMI and an improved hardware scaler chip.

pretty much more of the same just with additional features on the ps4

@rosinmonkekyx17: You need to look at this from 2016 point of view, technology gets old in 6 months, new phones, tablets, GPUs, CPUs, even cars get yearly or twice a year releases.

By modern standards, PS4 and X1 are OOOOOLD

According to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) there will be two new Xbox One consoles to be announced at E3.

(One could be a Slim Version and the other an entire new Xbox console).

I hate going into Gamestop. I went there a couple weeks as my friend asked me if I could pick up a game for him while I was in the city and it just further cemented my decision to avoid that store. They try to sell you some BS add-on for $3.99 that protects your game for a year. Yeah, no. I take care of my games so I don't need that. And then they ask you if you want to sign up for their EDGE Platinum membership that's "only" 15 dollars a year and nets you an extra 10% of trade in value when you bring your games in. I get that it's not the employee's fault, but it's just so damn annoying. All I want to do is buy my game and get out. It's one reason why I buy my PC games through Steam/Origin and any console games through Amazon.

@heydink: When it's a video game console launch, then yes. Considering that typically only happens every 5 or so years. But thanks to Nintendo, they are off cycle and we are getting a new console earlier than usual.

I hope both Sony and Microsoft take their time on their next consoles with 1080p 30/60fps as standard, no point trying for 4k consoles yet when even a vast majority of PC gamers only game at 1080p 60fps, keep the next consoles disk based coz we are not yet ready for disk-less consoles! If they consider these factors which I trust they will, then I have high hopes for the future of console gaming.

@letsgame82: I game at 4K, thank you very much.

As far as consoles go, there are no more FHD TVs sold, only the CHEAPEST bottom of the line garbage is FHD, everything else is 4K, even Vizio moved to 4K and has only one FHD line the cheapest one

@Benny_a: You just have to look at the Steam surveys to see that 4k gaming is still a very small minority. Sure not everyone that uses steam participates in the survey but given the sample size, the margin of error is pretty small. Only 1.5% of players use 1440p resolution and less then 0.5% are running at resolutions higher then 1440p. Even 1080p only accounts for 36% of users and 26% of users are still running standard laptop resolution of 1366x768. The rest is made of widescreen and and a large 30% running dual monitor setups.

Roughly less than 2% are gaming at resolutions above 1080p, i would call that pretty minimal. Even assuming dual monitor setups are running 3840x1080, thats only 66% of PC players gaming at 1080p resolutions.

@fitzy_2812: Consoles are not PC's they attached to TVs not PC monitors. There are no more FHD TV's, in last 2 years the TV market had a revolution and moved to 4K, FHD sets sold now are left overs and will be phased out. Even cheap Brands like Vizio and others moved to 4K, leaving only the most cheapest line of their TVs FHD, everything else, like Low-middle, Middle and higher moved to 4K. You can get a Premium (with 4K+HDR and FALD) Vizio 4K TV, 50inch for only 1K USD and 55inch for 1.3K USD. Thats almost free.

You have very pessimistic logic, I remember people talking how 360 and PS3 is enough and could last another 2-3 years. Thankfully your kind of people are not in control, otherwise new gen would be PlayStation 2 and people would still be playing their PS1 saying how its "good enough" to last another year.

Hardware sales move up based on early adopters, they buy new Hardware and "advertise" it then normal people buy it and then the last ones are people looking for deals, people that can actually wait a FULL YEAR just to save 50$ or 100$ on some holiday sale (I seriously LOL here).

Both X1 and PS4, moved to x86, It means for you that every future console will be fully backwards compatible and it means that new games will be playable on OLD consoles for at least 2 generations forward In the same way it works on the PC and smartphones/tablets. Youll have the same exact game that you would if there was no PS4K: BUT people with PS4K will have better graphics. Its that simple

This system works fine on the PC and will work on the consoles, unimportant jobless gamers (aka teenagers) will have to adjust to the fact that their friends with money have better graphics and no point in bitching about it.

Now as far as steam PC survey is extremely problematic, Steam is old and this survey is generated automatically when you install steam, so it has every single PC that steam was installed on, also it doesn't remove old PCs like if you'll upgrade your GPU it will be counted as another PC. Im sure you agree that for every Gaming PC there is no less then 5000-10000 office PCs/laptops/3rd world PC's (yep steam is global, so its not Europe/USA only, 90% of the world is not the west, most of them are poor). If you want to know what PC users buy and use, steam survey is not the place, Hardware web sites and their forums is.

Im sure you understand that gaming market is NOT targeted at poor people,m its not targeted at poor western people that buy their console after 2 years on some black Friday discount and then buy one game a year and play MP for all year long and then RENT games here and there! If everyone was like that it wouldn't Survive!!! Both PC and console market is targeted at people that can buy at LEAST one game a month, some people buy more. The middle-low consumer is considered one that buy every Triple-A game, so its only 4-6 games a year. and people that buy COD or FIFA or Madden once a year and play MP all year long are NOT the target, they dont generate any income for Sony/MS, they dont count. Same with renters and swappers.

P.S. I hope my English is clear enough, not my native language.

@Benny_a: FHD TVs trying to be phased out but they definitely have not stopped producing FHD TVs, you just have to look at the electronics expos to see that new and fancy FHD TVs are still being produced, the only thing that changed is that it is no longer necessary to keep multiple lines of FHD TVs since you can sell top of the line FHDs for dirt cheap these days anyway, these additional lines are the only thing manufacturers have stopped producing.

Cheaper 4k TVs are not what will make the market shift from UHD either, they might make early adopters switch over but if the introduction of colour TV and later FHD TV taught us anything, it is that the bulk of the consumer base will only migrate when enough content is finally delivered in that format. A large portion of content delivered around the world and even in the US and Europe alone is still only broadcast in 720p with selected broadcast channels or even just specific shows shown in 1080p because of bandwidth issues. Only last week I saw an ESPN broadcast that was in 720p, I'm not American but I imagine that's a pretty big channel over there to still have 720p broadcasts.

As for the steam surveys, they are performed every month and do not include old versions when a new month starts and whilst they don't include every gamer out there, based on the millions of people alone that do use steam, any statistician will probably tell you the sample size is large enough to get an appropriate estimation with little margin of error. We also aren't talking about PCs in general, we only care about the gaming side of it, so that once again has no effect on the stats at hand.

I'm not sure why you bought up backwards compatibility, it has nothing to do with the conversion at hand really. Also, the 360/PS3 generation did in fact last 2-3 years longer then any previous generation. You say I'm pessimistic but I to am very disappointed with the current generation consoles and hope this is going to be a very short generation but even if we do get new consoles in another 2-3 years, they will still be a very long way away from natively running in 4k.

@fitzy_2812: Why are you arguing? How hard is to open Samsung, Sony, LG or Vizio web site and look at their TVs? They have ZERO hi-end FHD TV's, ZERO. what they have are extreme low-end models.

Content is not important, when you need a new TV because your old one broke down, has bad picture or you want a bigger one, your only choice is 4K.

People rarely buy a new TV based on available content, they buy one because they just need a TV.

TV adoption pushes content, we had FHD tvs before we had any content and in non western countries there are ZERO HD content but everyone has HDTV because there is no alternative, if you wanted a new TV your only option was HDTV, right now your only option is UHD.

You right about Steam survey but there are over 125 Million active steam accounts, so its meaningless, everyone has team, not just hardcore gamers. Just look at the all the top GPUs these are antiquated Mobiles or onboard chips, they cant run any games even at low settings.

You need to look at this from another point, Nvidia and AMD sales, nvidia wouldn't survive as company if all they sold were 50$ video cards. There is reason why we have 600$ GPUs, and last time i checked the most popular and most sold nvidia card this gen was GTX970 which is 350$ GPU.

I never said we will see every game native in 4K, thats impossible right now, it will be possible next year (or basically with the next console after PS4K), Zen based APU with Vega GPU will be bale to do 4K/30FPS at console settings.

Right now I want HDMI 2.0 with Good build in upscaler and CPU/GPU that is faster then what we have in PS4 to do 2K and upscale from 2K to 4K.

I'm not sure I'd want to bank on the predictions of a Gamestop suit. The only thing imminent are VR headsets and a new Nintendo console. The rest is nothing but rumors. It would be very irresponsible for a COO to base future decisions and sales projections on rumor. Chatting about it over lunch sure, but making a presentation about complete conjecture is pretty silly.

I'm actually inclined to believe the existence of these devices is true - and this is not wishful thinking, because I'd prefer that they did not. I don't know that I believe they are on the same release schedule - it kind of sounds like NX this winter, PS4k next spring, and X2 the following fall or something based on the level of coyness and vagueness of the rumors. We'll see. As someone focused on gameplay over graphics, I'd prefer they just held off (except in Nintendo's case, where I think the market is kind of demanding such a move)

I have always said these are place holder until true gen of consoles comes out. MS and Sony needed to make a little bit more profit in between time to make them. So they rushed these to get them out asap.

Despite the fact that there will not be new consoles from MS and Sony in the next few year, I wouldn't be too excited if I were Gamestop. Fact is that the next generation of consoles will likely be digital only (for real this time). Nintendo's NX points at that direction already. That will leave Gamestop business model dead in the water within a couple years.

@skemaal: Never happen. They'd have to be crazy to make next gen consoles digital only. Digital sales vs. physical sales haven't even reached 30%-40% yet on consoles. High digital sales numbers are due to PC and mobile downloads, not console. You think they are going to give the middle finger to more than two-thirds of console gamers? You think every console owner on the planet has internet capable of downloading 50GB games quickly and cheaply with no cap? Or fast enough speeds to stream games? They'd be excluding tens of millions of customers. They want to increase sales, not exclude entire demographics due to poor internet service. Losing millions of console sales to save $30-$40 on an optical drive would be quite the boner move. You read stories of how devs are making more digital only games rather than physical and stuff but they fail to mention it's just that there are a lot more small devs making Indie games that aren't worth the cost of physical distribution.

@gamingdevil800: This has always been what's stopped me from going digital. I just don't understand how Sony thinks it can justify charging around 50% more than physical media. Surely it should be the other way around? Nintendo certainly overprice the downloads of their 30-year-old games too. Don't know if Microsoft are guilty of the same?

@steveaug13: Not so simple. The reason disk based games get discounts is because stores need to get rid of stock so they "eat" the loss.

On digital they dont need to do any of that, they targeting the IMPULSE buyers. Also because the price is always high when they do offer a discount it feels substantiation and all the people on the edge might buy, they will see that its 50% off (not the actual price) and buy it, of course they could order a second hand on ebay or find a discount in one of the chains, but as i said: Impulse buy, you saw a discount, you was interested in this game so you ordered it.

If we move 100% to digital, the situation will be even worse, they wont have ANY competition (right now they compete with THEMSELVES), so they will increase the price by at least 10$ and have the price based on demand not on time, if the game sells X amount of copies a week they will hold the original price, no matter if its holiday or whatever (in store they could offer a discount on holiday).

Also they will offer a permanent discount for subscribers, so everyone who owns a console will be a Xbox live and PSPlus subscriber, either they want it or not just to get that 10-15% or maybe even 20% permanent discount on new games

@nelsonlord: Same with PS4, on E3 Sony will announce 2 new PS4s: a PS4 Slim (PS4 HD) that will go for 299$ with 1TB HDD and be targeted at Regular Gamers and PS4K for 400$ to 500$ that will be targeted at 4K TV owners it will have 2 major features:

1. HDMI 2.0/HDCP 2.2 support for 4K UHD (BluRay movies)

2. GOOD upscaling chip that will upscale everything to 4K.

Of course it will have a better hardware too but we wont see many native 4K/30FPS games, what we will see is like in Quantum Break: Temporal Reconstructions.

Games wil be made to run FHD on PS4 Slim and 2K on PS4K and from 2K it will use temporal reconstruction to get 4K resolution and lazy devs will leave to the upscaler chip. Of course old games if they unpatched will be just upscaled to 4K.

Every previous game will automatically benefit from new hardware without the need for patches: every game that had Frame dips and slowdowns will run at their original target (faster CPU/GPU so no frame dips just due of this)

Ill pre-order PS4K 1000000%

Slow news day I guess eh Gamespot ? Proud PC owner here and also a satisfied owner of the Xbox One and PS4 systems.

Don't need another console line up unless they incorporate ground breaking features like native 4K support for their IPs, out of the box cross platform multiplayer, full reverse compatibility for all Xbox One / PS4 games to name a few. And no more 720p 30fps crap. I am sorry but 1080p 60 fps should be a MUST for all IPs if 4K is not possible. I can understand 4K might not be possible at all even on these new consoles but all games must be 60 fps at 1080p as a MINIMUM. If SONY and M$ can't achieve that, then they can focus on something else.

@starjay009: How is reporting on the conference of a retail company whose core business is selling video games representative of a slow news day?

Good lord Eddie........this is the quote, emphasis mine "we are very pleased to see the introduction of technology like virtual reality and rumored new console launches, some of which seem imminent," VR is the only one imminent, clearly that is what they were referring to.
