New Bungie game code-named Tiger, logo confirmed

Studio offers new details on upcoming Activision project in 20th anniversary video covering Halo history, future of Washington state developer.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

When Bungie signed a 10-year exclusive publishing deal with Activision in April 2010, the developer said it was working on an entirely new universe for multiple platforms. Since then, Bungie has confirmed the game will run on an all-new engine and likened it to a massively multiplayer title. Now, the developer has shed new light on the project, confirming it is currently in development under the working name "Tiger" and is related to a familiar logo.

Bungie's new game is related to this logo.

The news stems from Bungie's 20th anniversary video titled "O Brave New World," which was released today and speaks about the developer's history and future. In addition to offering the code name for the project, the developers teased the new project further.

"You feel responsible for not just telling an isolated story, but for building a universe that at some point is going to become more the fans than it is ours," said a Bungie staffer. "It's going to take a life of its own."

Is this a first look at Bungie's first game with Activision?

Also during the video, Bungie offered new hints about the project, revealing what might be the first screenshot from the game. Pictured at right, the image shows a vast landscape with a metal-looking windmill in the foreground.

Lastly, Bungie concluded the video documentary with a familiar logo. It was first seen in May when dummy corporation Podophobia Entertainment filed a trademark for Destiny, rumored to be a massively multiplayer online first-person shooter, with the accompany logo (above). Adding to the veracity of the logo, Bungie staffer Johnathan Barnes was spotted wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with the same logo at a Penny Arcade Event.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I am from the future. Halo will stay as strong, and "Project Tiger" is actually called "Destiny." It will flop though so don't get hyped.

@carp93: Cool and breezy, thanks for asking! To address your second post, I've never been a huge Halo fan, but MS would be insane to release one that didn't meet their fans' expectations. I doubt that any future title in the franchise will impress or disappoint any more or less than those Halos after the first (really impressive) entry. @carp93: As for a contract, it may be that there was overlap, but MS could have shut down production or release. Owning the rights to the IP, and being the publisher is essentially determining the future of the franchise. It's true that if they had some interim contracts, and decided to remove Bungie that they would probably have clauses demanding some kind of serious penalty ($$$), but they'd still retain control. On a practical level, schisms occur in dev houses all of the time; 343 may have been created amicably, but Bungie didn't need to sign off on anything. It may be that they DID, but it wouldn't have been necessary, and it may be that it would be foolish to go ahead and create 343 without Halo team members, but not legally necessary.

Halo will always be strong, but it really looks like Battlefield 3 is going to be the next big thing.

@Frame_Dragger Hey, how's the weather up there on that massive high horse of yours? And I actually think its somewhere between what Snaptrap and caboose84 are saying. IIRC there actually WAS a 5 game contract that was fulfilled by Halos 1-3 and ODST/Reach (I believe they themselves say as much in their latest VidDoc.) But at the same time they were acquired by Microsoft (So in a way its less of a 'contract' then an 'assignment') so MS got the rights to Halo, and were the ones that passed it off to 343. Not that Bungie didn't have any say in that, many of the 343 people are ex-Bungie, and if Bungie didn't approve of 343's existence they wouldn't have collaborated on it.

@Snaptrap: Ahhhh, objectivity and logic, it BURNS! ;) Seriously, you'd think these kind of matters would be obvious to people who have access to the vast information offered by the internet. It seems that people here care more for what they think 'should be', and choose to ignore what IS. You'd think that some (not you obviously) forget that we're talking about a business like any other.

@caboose84 Bungie was OWNED by Microsoft so they didn't need a contract, and nothing in the Bungie acquisition agreement was mentioned about making a certain number of Halo games because what would happen if the game was a failure? Microsoft would've ended up spending millions to buyout a developer just to make an unsuccessful series. Microsoft (not Bungie) handed Halo to 343 because they own 343 and the rights to Halo. When you don't own the rights to something you have no say in the matter of where they go.

@caboose84 ODST is an add-on, thats why its called Halo 3 ODST, not Halo ODST, it was just priced at $60, by Microsoft, And Bungie had to leave halo behind because they wanted to be independent, but they couldn't do that without leaving Halo behind.

@snaptrap Well apperantly Bungie was the one who wanted to stop making Halo games. If I recall, Bungie had a contract with Microsoft for 5 Halo game. After Halo 3, they got tired of making them and just wanted to work on something else but they couldn't. Assuming that's true, that's why they pushed ODST out as a full game instead of a Halo 3 Add On like planned so they only had to make Reach after that. That being said, I'm sure they're perfectly fine with Microsoft keeping the right. They even chose 343 to take over and promised Halo was in good hands. So while the first part of your post is correct, that wasn't exactly how them leaving went.

Project name now changed to match logo: 'Tron Jock Protector'. I wonder if the logo designers realized just how comically phallic that thing is, or if it was just a bunch of grahic designers who can't get laid accidentally "expressing" themselves.

@mrzero1982pt2 They didn't sell the rights to Halo because Microsoft already owned them after acquiring Bungie. In order to publish something you need to own the rights to it and that's what Microsoft retained when they separated. The deal was probably Bungie saying "Yeah, we'd like to separate" and Microsoft responds with "Go ahead but we're keeping Halo". That's the %@ part of creating something for a publisher because they keep what you give them. I'm glad though, at least Bungie will be able to move on to other things for other platforms without the approval from Microsoft.

What an ambiguous way to tease your fans Bungie! :) Blizzard Activision is making Titan: MMO FPS; guess to raise the odds of success, Bungie is also making a MMO FPS.

@XanderZane I have a 250gb and the halo reach music always goes away, you just have to navigate back to the main title sreen and the music comes back. i dont think it has anything to do with the how much gb's are on the harddrive. all, i can say is that every once in a while my connection with live (not playing games online) is laggy, but it gets normal in no time. Also, downloading the games you mostly play on to your hard drive may help.

Why is this interesting to PC gamers? Bungie is a console developer. Tech news from a console developer is the same as tech news from someone that manufactures T-Fords today. The consoles are 6 years old, that's the equivalent of a T-Ford in the computer age.

Bungie is still an independent studio and has full possession over their new IP. Activision just gets the honor of being the one to fund the project and print/distribute the disks it is printed on, making tons of money from the resulting sales.
