The newly announced Borderlands game, which Gearbox Software CEO Randy Pitchford called "the big one," is being developed "specifically for next-gen consoles."

That's according to Take-Two president Karl Slatoff, who dropped the quote today during an earnings call following the company's financial report this afternoon.

Slatoff's comments make it pretty clear that the next Borderlands game is coming to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but not Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3.

It isn't altogether surprising that this new game would skip last-generation consoles. That's because sales of the Xbox One and PS4 have been strong, and also because those consoles are technically superior to their previous generation counterparts, allowing for new gameplay features and innovation.

Gearbox hasn't said whether the new Borderlands game is Borderlands 3, but given the fact that Pitchford has called it the "big one," it seems likely. No release date, or even a projection of a release date, has been announced for the game yet.

In the more immediate future, Gearbox will release Borderlands: The Handsome Collection on March 24 for Xbox One and PlayStation 4. This bundle includes remastered versions of Borderlands 2 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
