New Battlefield 5 Story Trailer Rises To The Occasion

This is war, son.

Battlefield V returns to World War 2, which means a lot of focus on the heroism of a just cause, the Greatest Generation, and all the imagery that entails. The single-player story trailer embraces that spirit wholeheartedly with a cinematic presentation that intermingles personal sacrifices with the bombastic moments that come in a theater of war.

In it we see a variety of characters as the globe-trotting campaign features War Stories from different regions' soldiers taking part in the conflict. It doesn't shed much light on the particular arcs of these disparate characters but we do get a good idea of the variety of backgrounds and settings for the battles.

Now Playing: Battlefield V - Official Single Player Trailer

Battlefield this year is introducing Firestorm, a new Battle Royale mode with a 64-player max. It's also taking its time to make some adjustments following feedback from the open beta.

If you're itching for Battlefield and you just can't wait until November 20, EA is giving away all four expansions for Battlefield 1 through October. The first two are free now, and the second two will likely swap out as the freebies later in the month. You can also find the game itself relatively cheap on all platforms, if you don't have it already. Of course, if nothing but Battlefield 5 will do, you can also play it a little early with EA Access--as long as your platform of choice is Xbox One. Check out our pre-order guide for more details.

@ahsanh: Why are you only calling out misogyny? There are other -isms represented here and your intentional neglect of them only serves to prove your endorsement. I'm offended, this is 2018. We're living in a society here.

Finally, some representation for my black great grandmother, who was one of the many lesbians that won WW2. Only now can we say, that it wasn't in vain that she perished at the hands of a German who shot her down with a rifle using fiber optic sights and extra fast bullets. If only she would have opened a few more loot boxes...

Am I the only one who wants this game to fail because I hate EA?

I mean sure the sjw stuff is cancer too. But I want EA to learn some respect for their customers....or go away, either one is fine by me.

@Jdzspace: The only reason I don't want them to fail is because I love WW2 and I don't want them to think WW2 isn't wanted because then they'll stop making them! So for that reason I kinda hope it gets support anyway for the sake of continuing making quality WW2 games.

@Jdzspace: EA and SJWorld will definitely blame the period. They definitely won't cite backlash against the politically driven intersectional feminist-approved re-framing of WW2.

Here is a fact, every operative member of the Heavy Water Operation that took place in Rjukan Norway were MALE. No I am not a misogynist for stating a fact! No there is nothing to be triggered about that, and yes it is quite disheartening to see historical facts being omitted for political messaging. You know who also did that? HOLOCAUST DENIERS. This is why as a passionate and proud Norwegian citizen I HATE THIS MISREPRESENTATION OF FACTS!

Here are to the REAL Heroes of the operation.

@bulletproff: I appreciate your efforts to highlight this lesser known historical event, however, before we start going all pitchforks and torches, do we actually know what the BF5 campaigns are? The last several games were fictional stories based around historical events, is this not the same thing? Like, is the Norway story in BF5 actually about the Heavy Water Operation, or is it simply a fictional story about a resistance effort from some character you play as?

I'm all for keeping history unbiased and in check, but I'm also not about yelling with pitchforks when we don't have all the information yet. Unless EA stated this character is participating in the above event, I don't see the problem here aside from uneducated people getting tricked by a fictional story.

To make an analogy, there's real life French resistance fighters and their stories, and there's also fictional stories that happen to be about WW2-era France from fictional character's point of view. There's been plenty of fictional stories from the old days too (like the original Call of Duty and their stories about US characters). Unless the writers/directors/whatever state that their fictional story is real or something, I don't really have a problem.

@chippiez: That's the thing though - have EA stated that their fictional stories are real stories? Have they cited or showed off documentation of real stories? As far as I know they are making their own stories that happen to take place in a historical event, like what many, many, many games have done for the past decades. For the record I like historical accuracy as much as the next person, but I can easily also tell this is just a fictional piece of work that won't really affect my life.

There's also the fact that multiplayer is not the same as single player. I don't care about whacky customization in multiplayer because it's flippin' multiplayer, something that definitely never aims to be realistic in any capacity. Nor does it aim to be true to history, because again, multiplayer. It's not telling a story, it's literally hordes of (usually foul-mouthed) players repetitively killing and respawning over and over. So yeah, if people want to have silly customization options in MP, why not.

I understand some outrage but it's literally the same as toxic "SJW" keyboard warriors. Same crap different side of the coin. Throwing out the pitchforks when we don't know what the stories actually are, when we jump to conclusions without knowing information, is very stupid.

@bulletproff: That sucks... 2018 and we are facing some historical revisionism, lol just unreal. This is the first time I heard about such operation, EA could fool me (and others like me) with this SJW bullshit. Games are a dumb hobby, still, they can open the doors for other stuff. Historical accuracy should be obligatory regarding any kind of media. Unless the product is based on a elsewhere world/alternative history.

@zmanbarzel: you are intentionally conflating gameplay mechanics inserted to make it a fun game with pc historical revisionism inserted to mislead the public. Can you see the difference? One is artistic lisence, the other is a lie.

@zmanbarzel: Thats totally missing the point. The point here is not the EFFECT of gameplay decisions, its the INTENT of decisions made for gameplay versus the INTENT of decisions made for propaganda.

Healthpacks/regen health is INTENDED to make the game more fun, whether or not it achieves that effect is irrelevant. Lying about women and minorities signifigance as combatants is INTENDED to make the public believe a false narrative about World War 2.

Your original point is ridiculous because it pretends there is no difference between healthpacks and lying about history for propaganda purposes. I guess youre ok w dishonest political propaganda in games bc muh health regen.

@bulletproff: Thanks for the post! I think that BFV might have disappointing sales for a whole host of reasons including the SJW stuff. To be honest the beta was just crap, not a single big battle took place while I played like what you would see in BF1 and BF4.

As a Norwegian I find it incredible that now that Dice had an opportunity to actually tell the Rjukan operation in a accurate manner and they completely missed the entire point of it, in favour for some political message. What a joke.

@bulletproff:

Women had an immensely important role in WW2. It just wasn't as infantry on the fronts. The factories churning out the tanks and planes that allowed us to win the war were largely operated by women. Women took care of much of the world back home while a large percentage of working-age men were on the front. It's a shame that the sacrifice and work that the real heroic women of WW2 endured means so little to SJW-istan, that they have to blatantly re-spin history into something that is so factually errant, it more closely resembles steampunk fantasy than anything based on WW2.

And still only 64 players - even in Battle Royale mode?

I remember back in the days when BF was ground-breaking with their 64 players cap... but that was, what, more than 15 years ago?

Since then, we have seen games like MAG pushing 256 players on claustrophobic resources limitations that was PS3... hundreds of players fighting for single choke-point in Planetside 2... 100 players per game in Fortnite and PUBG... even CoD did better with 80 players in new Blackout mode.

Not saying that more is always better, but some maps/modes/real battles' recreations would benefit from more players, and it is about offering more options to gamers. With configurable servers and sessions, players can always reduce down to 64, 32... less if they want... but it would be epic to have max number doubled, or more... and BF was always about epic large battles recreations.

Just imagine... if Dice would ever decide to try recreate, say, Napoleon wars... US revolution... Civil War... Cavalry attack made with 5 players on horses really would not do it... or battery of 3 cannons... or 8 infantrymen in single line order.

I'm really disappointed with lack of improvements on base formula. Sure, there are fine adjustments applied... improved visuals... but these modern BF games really don't feel that much different from BF3, or BF:BC2 multiplayer. Why not having 10-player squads instead of 4-player teams? Faction-based comms that cover more than one fire-team? Persistent battle worlds where all the maps are connected to make one whole, and players can move from one front to the other and provide support where his/her side needs it the most?

Yep I am referring to things that worked well in Planetside 2. Game had (probably still does) its fair share of issues, but some stuff that players could experience there, in its peak... relief troops delivered by 10+ air transporters... assault of 40 armored vehicles, north of 500 players fighting for one base... I haven't been playing PS2 for 2 or 3 years now, but I still remember some of these moments, much more vividly than anything that I have experienced in BF.

Formula is getting really tired, for me. I have played some BF1... but not more than 2 months, if that. I want to like BFV... but just don't feel enough motivated to get it. So... probably not.

Ignoring all the political crap, all I care about is a good SP. Something to the quality of Halflife 1/2 which came superb on both fronts.

Gaming has went into a ditch where, if it's MP focused, we fully expect the SP to be short, and crap.

Alot of people who bought Halflife 2, were buying it for Counterstrike: Source. And vice versa, alot of people who bought a game like Portal 2, were buying for the SP, and coop, ended up being astounding, arguably better.

They can pour all the flashy, dramatic mocap, crap in the world. But if your SP is 6 hours of boring linear repetitive crap, who cares? It's just a waste of money and time.

@uninspiredcup: I agree I love single player games and like seeing more of them. However, if you're looking at games like Battlefield you're looking in the wrong place. Single player isn't their main focus, it is mostly there to help secure more sales.

There's still plenty of good single player games being made, and I hope it stays that way as the current trends for "games as a service" is worrying for people like me.

@uninspiredcup: Half Life is just a surreal standard, way too high for the likes of Dice. Still, considering the current generation, it's better to not waste time and resources with a useless single player campaign. I know a lot of people got mad with this notion, but honestly, if they charge $40 for a multiplayer only BF5 instead of 60, I can bet with anyone that the public will find that a good deal (they will bash heads at first)

@uninspiredcup: my thoughts exactly. I think the younger generation is more tolerable of this because they werent there to see games that were amazing on both ends (mp & sp).

Graphics are the only improvement over those days...

@vs_shield: I agree with InspiredCup although your statements, not so much. Literally blaming an entire subsection of humans doesn't do much, nor is it actually useful. It's not a 'younger generation' problem (especially in light of the fact that the average gamer age is above 30 years old). It's simply trends in the industry. I don't like 'games as a service' type of games that are heavily focused on multiplayer either, but it is what it is. Trends come and go all the time - used to turned based RPGs, used to be strategy games, nowadays it's battle royale. For the record I really dislike BR and I'm hoping it dies off so resources are put into different ideas, but so far there's still plenty of great single player games being made.
