New Battlefield 5 Story Trailer Rises To The Occasion

This is war, son.

Battlefield V returns to World War 2, which means a lot of focus on the heroism of a just cause, the Greatest Generation, and all the imagery that entails. The single-player story trailer embraces that spirit wholeheartedly with a cinematic presentation that intermingles personal sacrifices with the bombastic moments that come in a theater of war.

In it we see a variety of characters as the globe-trotting campaign features War Stories from different regions' soldiers taking part in the conflict. It doesn't shed much light on the particular arcs of these disparate characters but we do get a good idea of the variety of backgrounds and settings for the battles.

Now Playing: Battlefield V - Official Single Player Trailer

Battlefield this year is introducing Firestorm, a new Battle Royale mode with a 64-player max. It's also taking its time to make some adjustments following feedback from the open beta.

If you're itching for Battlefield and you just can't wait until November 20, EA is giving away all four expansions for Battlefield 1 through October. The first two are free now, and the second two will likely swap out as the freebies later in the month. You can also find the game itself relatively cheap on all platforms, if you don't have it already. Of course, if nothing but Battlefield 5 will do, you can also play it a little early with EA Access--as long as your platform of choice is Xbox One. Check out our pre-order guide for more details.

The beta was very bad and I don't see the final game being much different. As bad as BO4 looked during its reveal, I'm having a blast with friends in the Blackout mode.

The battle royale is only 64 character? Wow that is low. Its basically just a reworked conquest mode.

@sakaixx: Most likely EA and DICE didn't want to spend money for better servers to handle the additional load.

Mine WWII too much, and you're going to run out of gold to use. With all the wars that have been apart of human history, I would love to see these games take on something radically different. Clearly, with their WWII stuff, telling the story of other countries besides the U.S. fighting against other nations is something players could get behind. So maybe we could see the story of other wars, like the Russo-Japanese war or the Six Day War. Lots of interesting stories to tell from other wars that haven't been mined into oblivion like WWII has.

@Pierce_Sparrow: I don't know man, a lot of shit went down over the 6 years WW2 raged. So many amazing stories from all sides and I don't think they could ever run out tales to tell from that era. The problem I see is we just keep getting the same major battles over and over which I completely understand from a games point of view as they need to play it safe. However a Russian v Norway MP map would be sweet, Germans Invasion of Poland, Czech, France, The US landings in North Africa, British battle for Crete, the conflict through out the Balkans, they could do it if they were willing to take some risks.

@burtonboy05: But even then, you're still getting the same Axis vs Allies, with the same technology and the same time period. There are only so many different battle fronts and stories that can continually be told. Sure, there were a lot of different strategies and regions, but in the end, as you say, not all of it is ripe for being used for a video game, and it's still the same bad guys vs. good guys. History is full of different wars in different periods that used different tech. It doesn't have to be WWII all the time.

@Pierce_Sparrow: Well what did you think of BF1, which was about World War 1 and which took effort to highlight some previously less covered areas of that war? Criticism aside it's admirable they're actually trying to show off the less popular/less known stuff about the wars. Whether they did it well enough is up to you. My only gripe is that in their attempt to create fictional stories, people get up in arms about them, although on the other hand these fictional stories can also inadvertently mislead uneducated people (especially since most of our kids are going to be learning through electronic means, videos and video games included).

To be honest, as the other guy said, both World Wars have a ton of stuff to cover, it'll never really get old so long as they cover the less known stuff. I mean, how often do big AAA games do stuff in WW2 Norway, as an example?

Also, one more thing: Nazi's. Easiest bad guys for video game purposes ever, thus making WW2 an easy topic. You try doing a more controversial topic, like 6 days in Fallujah, a cancelled game that was cancelled SIMPLY because it was trying to accurately portray a recent war, the games get criticized for being brave.

@Yurdle: Super agree. presenting fantasy as fact is gross. I really liked Valiant Hearts, its full of history, and the stuff thats not is pretty obvious, because its ultra cartoony.

The reason WWII is still such a interesting topic to so many is the real stories and events and people, not something made up and pasted on top in the same place and time.

If you want to make a fantastical 'realistic' shooter, be my guest, it might do great, but if you want to invoke the name of WWII you better be using facts as long as you can - I say as long as you can because as another poster noted, it being a video game means you do have to sacrifice some realism: map sizes, speed of healing, ability to run the same speed carrying nothing but a knife as you can carrying 100 lbs, etc etc.

@gleencross:

The entire Rjukan Operation in Norway from the endless waiting, to the operation and to the escape from German forces was done almost entirely on skis.

@Sindroid: Honestly, this is the first time I heard about this operation. Seems interesting. It seems logical that skiing was a thing in the eastern front, but ski warfare is just... weird. And let me guess, there was no women participating on the field regarding this operation.

@gleencross: You just experienced tangential learning my friend, or at least I hope you will. Self-educate yourself on topics that you are exposed to in a format you enjoy (video games, for example). Just remember though that in BF5, those stories are fictional but are inspired by real life tales. So look up the stuff.

I don't know why you thought ski warfare wasn't real, but anyways now you know! BF5 just did you a favour! However I suppose people are upset BF5 has a real chance at educating the public. Remember, nowadays our kids are going to be learning through electronics - videos and games play a bigger role than they used to! But they decided to go for fictional stories that might confuse the uneducated.

@Yurdle: Well, to use skis for transportation, that's perfectly fine. Now to engage on combat while riding a ski? Nope, this is a james bond kind of lunacy, lol And we know how romanticized WW2 is, maybe they used skis to go in and out, that's it, but the "legend" amps up the action.

@gleencross: ?? Honestly I'm not sure why this is so surprising. You can go ahead and research this topic yourself. There's a reason we have an Olympic event involving skiing and shooting. There's some great examples from WW2 where ski warfare was used successfully. I'll get you started, look up Finland fighting against the Soviet Union in 1939. Like, snow slows people down a lot, except for those who know how to deal with it.

This isn't romanticized stuff dude, these were well trained soldiers who used their home turf's environment to their advantage. I mean hell there's even a British soldier who went into combat with a friggin' claymore and bow and arrow. Or the US soldier who holds the record as the only person to ever shoot down an enemy plane with a pistol. Don't get me started on some of the horrendous experiments Imperial Japan did (or, pretty much anything they did) and its outcomes. A lot of crazy stuff happened, you'd be surprised how much of it is real.

@gleencross: What is wrong with skiing during WW2?

Ski warfare is a thing, and it was a fairly common means of transportation for Norwegian troops, which is where I believe that part of the campaign takes place. And Finnish ski troops played a key role in the war between Finland and The Soviet Union.

@merwanor: Everyone knows skiing didn't exist until way after WW2. Throwing it into BFV is part of an SJW liberal agenda to force skiing into everything as revisionist history.

@Bread_or_Decide: That would actually be pretty cool. Has 2K or EA brought a first-person view to their NBA games yet? I remember playing a football game on the C64 back in the ‘80s that had (an incredibly slow) first-person mode where you actually had to count the steps to run your WR route.
