Now Playing: GS News Update: New Atari Console Will Bring "Current Gaming Content" As Well As Classic Titles

Atari has revealed new details and images of its first console in over 20 years, the Ataribox. The company has said it wants to bring both "current" and "classic" gaming content to the new device, which will contain "modern internal specs."

Atari said in a newsletter to fans (via Kotaku AU) that its "objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari." As such, it intends to launch two editions of its new console: a red/black version and a wood version. The company stated that both variants will possess "a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD).

"As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs," the publisher added. "It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content."

Take a look at the first images of the new device--which is separate to AtGames' NES Classic-like Flashback 8 microconsole--above. No price or release date have been announced for the Ataribox, which was first teased in June, though the company said "lots more information and status updates" will come as development progresses.

The last Atari console to launch was the Jaguar in 1993, but the releases of the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1995 further hindered the Jaguar's already-struggling sales. Ultimately this lead to a decline in fortunes for Atari, which had previously pioneered the games industry in western markets with titles such as Pong, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders.

The Atari brand has since changed hands a number of times. More recently the majority of the company's business has been in publishing mobile games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch, though the current owner of the Atari name--Atari SA, previously called Infogrames--is almost entirely separate from the original company from the '70s, '80s, and '90s.

The wood grain looks cool but I don't except much from this system as far as power. I think it will use a cloud streaming game service and maybe a custom android os for some games. Not as good as the shield but not as bad a the forge or onlive

I recall Blade Kitten being a fun game published by Atari which was developed by Krome Studios. So who knows, I can't see this taking off personally but perhaps they have a few developers behind the hardware. And I maybe interested if they have a remake of The New Nightmare, or something similar to that game.

Not buying it if all we get is games from 30 years ago lol.

This looks so sick! I want one. Hope the Atari logo lights up just like the pictures. Also hope to see a range of wireless controllers. Classic one button sticks and pong controllers for enhanced ports of Warlords, Super Sprint and Pong.

The wood grain is primed for a comeback. If they could offer a range of wood types that'd be sweet. Love to see Cherry, Teak and Ebony options.

@tomcat205: i agree, with nothing else going for it so far. And w/o major brand backing. Larger unit size...it better have some horsepower. If steambox couldn't do it. They better have something special under the hood. Cause we know it's ain't pacman or tetris.

@water1: You're wrong about major brand backing.

Atari was bought out by Infogrames, which also bought Hasbro. Civilization, Railroad Tycooon, Neverwinter Nights, Enter the Matrix, Dungeons and Dragons - all titles by Infogrames.

Now... the fact that it's being crowdfunded and no specs should lead to some suspicions. I don't think anyone in their right mind would say: "I want that day 1!". But hey, if they can deliver some specs, some games (especially exclusives), and gain parity with the AAA titles that will be coming out, it could be a major player. Otherwise... It's Ouya.

It'll play emulated games and indie titles, possibly android. I love the look and depending on the price I could see myself getting one anyway, but they need a better selling point. Portability, compatibility.. . Something. Content isn't going to be it, not in this day and age.

@water1: Sure, even if you think it is undeserved at least nintendo has recognizable mascots and IPs. Atari still makes games and I guess they could make first party titles, maybe even triple A but exclusive would insane and so would trying to match an arms race with Sony and Microsoft now.

@shadowwarrior4: Atari got bought out by Infogrames. Infogrames then acquired a bunch of other companies, like Hasbro. They then changed their name to Atari. Hasbro kept their own branding, but electronic games are published under Atari brand.

I love the design of the console in the picture, but other than that...why? Why does this need to exist? What does it offer anyone other than an opportunity to say, "Hey, remember Atari!"...which most gamers today would likely answer with, "No, who the hell is that?" because Atari hasn't been relevant in decades. Why would developers go through the trouble of even supporting this thing when it has such limited sales potential? None of this makes any sense and I'm wondering if I was hit on the head and while I may think it is July, it is really April 1st.

@ZIMdoom: I saw the Atari logo in the new Bladerunner trailer. So maybe they're making an effort to get back into the public's eye.

@7tizz: I could be wrong, but I do not believe that "everyone" knows the Atari name and logo any more. I would go so far as to argue that the majority of the mass gaming market today does not know Atari. Old timers like myself who actually owned one back in the day, or hardcore gamer nerds may know, but the average gamer today? I doubt it. And there is a reason for that. Atari has not been relevant for at least 25 years and that was the Jaguar which crashed and burned hard. So I don't know if Atari has even been relevant since the early 80s. Why would young gamers today know or care at all about Atari unless they were hardcore gamers who are really invested in knowing and learning the history of the hobby. As for "why not capitalize"? In order to capitalize on something like a console, there has to be demand and knowledge and awareness. I don't see anything to even capitalize on. Unless their only hope is to sell this to a handful of hardcore hobbyists and old nostaligia gamers. But if that is the case, it certainly won't attract developers so there are no games to really be had...which means why make it as "powerful" as other consoles on the market? And since there are tons of ways already to get most of the oldschool Atari titles already, why buy the console for those? No. I honestly don't see this even making it to market at all.

@7tizz: actually they don't. What about colleco?Their main competitor, what was their logo. Atari died sadly a long time ago. They need to do more than live off a dead brand only the older ones remember.

I like the idea. I think there is a marketplace for traditional gaming consoles that are more of a game machine than mini PC. Hope they can execute this product well and be successful.

@illegal_peanut: Right? At first, I cringed, because it's so different. I looked at it for about 30 seconds and it changed to, "You know what? That's really classy looking. It's like something out of a modern art exhibit. I like it."

I really like the look of it but I doubt it will be more powerful than my PS4 Pro and Xbox One (X soon). Will it have its own exclusives or is it refering to 3rd party games. I really have no desire to play old atari games.

Interesting. I think the current console market needs a shakeup. It's been the same 3 companies for a long time now. Hoping this does something interesting and isn't DOA.

This is nice but where's the cartridge slot? It should play 2600, 5200, 7800, and Jaguar games.

I really like the way it looks. How well it will do, what kind of support it will get, IDK. But it looks deliciously retro

Make it a console that can play all games from the last generation and most current indie games, plus mobiles, at a high FPS and then sell it for $200 and you will have something interesting.

I'm still not sure what to make of this. Against modern consoles, it doesn't stand a chance. A retro collection box, it has to go above & beyond what those ATgames Flashback consoles have been doing for years. It does have an SD card port so it's expandable which has that going for it. Ideally I may consider this if it not only includes the 2600 games but a collection of Atari 5200 and 7800 games as well which were never available in any retro-compilation (hardware or software) in the past aside from emulation.

Pointless. Reminder to everyone that the company named Atari has nothing to do with the Atari that made games in the 80s. They bought the name and have been pillaging the coffers of Atari's IP and are hoping you don't notice.

@7tizz: I stated facts. A "real gamer" would know these facts already:

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/its-time-to-say-goodbye-to-atari-once-and-for-all/1100-6402808/

I know facts are something you have an aversion to. And I know you're obsessed with somehow bringing Sony into every conversation.

@7tizz: Sounds like you're agreeing with me. That's usually what happens when you have to admit to reality.

I'm well aware the Atari name and IP has been pawned around multiple times due to multiple bankruptcies. That's what I was referring to in my first post which you just start rambling about Sony. I'm sure you can somehow spin Sony back into this.

They should call it "Jaguar 2: The Revengening".
