Now Playing: GS News Update: New Atari Console Will Bring "Current Gaming Content" As Well As Classic Titles

Atari has revealed new details and images of its first console in over 20 years, the Ataribox. The company has said it wants to bring both "current" and "classic" gaming content to the new device, which will contain "modern internal specs."

Atari said in a newsletter to fans (via Kotaku AU) that its "objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari." As such, it intends to launch two editions of its new console: a red/black version and a wood version. The company stated that both variants will possess "a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD).

"As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs," the publisher added. "It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content."

Take a look at the first images of the new device--which is separate to AtGames' NES Classic-like Flashback 8 microconsole--above. No price or release date have been announced for the Ataribox, which was first teased in June, though the company said "lots more information and status updates" will come as development progresses.

The last Atari console to launch was the Jaguar in 1993, but the releases of the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1995 further hindered the Jaguar's already-struggling sales. Ultimately this lead to a decline in fortunes for Atari, which had previously pioneered the games industry in western markets with titles such as Pong, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders.

The Atari brand has since changed hands a number of times. More recently the majority of the company's business has been in publishing mobile games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch, though the current owner of the Atari name--Atari SA, previously called Infogrames--is almost entirely separate from the original company from the '70s, '80s, and '90s.

@gottago42: Very true but considering most PS4 owners don't have Pro perhaps raw power isn't the appeal of the platform?

@gottago42: I don't think so, the console doesnt even seem to have holes for the air to exit... and for the looks of the backplate it looks more like it will bring some crap mobile SOC in it, which I hope not...

@DARREN636: Probably at least a year or two out. I wouldn't want them releasing specs until they're 3 months out. Why? Because if they release specs today based on today's current tech, it will be woefully outdated by release.

If they can deliver games, then it'll be a solid entry into a market that really needs some shake-up.

Infogrames had some serious titles back in the day - Civilization, RollerCoaster Tycoon, Masters of Magic, Unreal, Duke Nukem, Enter the Matrix (that sold 5 million copies in 2001!), etc. They also have Hasbro.

@Zero_Maniac: What you're missing that today's Atari isn't the Atari of the 1980's. They've been acquired and bought out by some serious players. Infogrames bought them, and then bought Hasbro. That's some serious backing.

Infogrames had some major titles back in the day. What can they bring today? Who knows. But they have the IPs, that's for sure.

@CyberEarth No, thats not some "serious backing" because you are wrong.

Hasbro the toy company is completely outside Atari ability to buy, they brought Hasbro Interactivebut that was in 2001 and since I am correcting this, Hasbro was the one that acquired the remains of Atari in the first place back in 98.

Now speaking of the current Inforgames/Atari, we are talking about a company that in 2013 filed Chapter 11 Bankruptcy, it come out of it one year later after entering the casino businesses.

I have no faith this is anything but another Crowfunded Scam banking on Nostalgia from people with more money then sense, thats hardly a surprise, Atari is long dead and its just a Frenchman wearing its skin.

@drkn06: Possibly, but they also have a retro-Atari (similar to the NES classic) that's coming out as well. I would think if they were banking on nostalgia alone, they wouldn't have two separate products coming.

We'll see what happens. The crowdfunding issue gives me great pause. But like I said, it's all dependent upon the games they have. Infogrames certainly has a lot of IPs that they can leverage. Whether they actually do that is up in the air at this point.

First of all, the video player is f'd. Keeps playing a stupid PS4 ad over and over.

I love the retro/futuristic design! Really captures the feel of the original, which I had when I was 5 years old. Wow. I hope they have some cool remakes of Combat etc.

Thats kind of shocking news, but from what I see looks like it will not compete with big dogs like ps4 and xbox one, looks more like nintendo switch power level console, but nevertheless it can disrupt market, good news for consumers.

I hope you know there won't be another Xbox, after XB1. The shareholders want out.

@bat725: Microsoft has money to burn and can use its financial and lobbying power among corporations to drive Atari into the ground -- then buy the company outright and have the wood-grain design on the next Xbox.

@pcps4xb: The Xbox division definitely has much more profits than Atari ,Microsoft already had financial reports confirming they made billions of dollars from the Xbox division Atari can't match that do you really think a company that hasn't made a console or anything really for that matter in 20 years would have more money than the Xbox division lol

@badwedgie00: If anyone remembers the initial release of the xbox 360 had interchangable face plates and I was extremely happy with the wood look one I had. I wish they would bring face plates back. The new E version is quiet and more energy efficient with a bigger hard drive, but I still miss my wood face plate.

@funkinslick: Man, I remember how 360 nickel and dimed everyone to death. Wireless controllers? Pay extra. Wireless internet? Pay extra. Play online? Pay extra. RROD? Buy another one!

As I've said before, you can't fix stupid and Xbots are the cream of the crop.

Finally, after all these years since Sega bailed out of the hardware business -- a shiny new challenger has arrived! Four USB ports? I have high hopes for the company that sold me my first video game console. Atari ought to ensure that the controllers are wireless and not unlike the bulky things of the past that were the staple of the 2600 and the Jaguar, if they wish to compete with the current juggernauts of the video gaming console world. The 7800's controllers were downright uncomfortable and unintuitive to hold. Taking a page from Nintendo's playbook, I believe that the SD card is the new cartridge -- able to deliver and access content much faster than any optical drive. That part at least looks promising. My advice to them would be to show third-party software developers a working prototype and try to sign on as many of them as possible -- system can't live without good games. Anyone remember the Turbografx-16? That system flopped badly without good games, and its offerings were hardly a challenge for even a casual gamer. If Atari is able to sign on Square-Enix, Capcom, Namco, Sucker Punch, Netherrealm Studios, and a bunch of others with a healthy amount of awesome exclusives, I'll buy one.

Why? Atari must have money to burn if they are wasting their money this way.
