Now Playing: GS News Update: New Atari Console Will Bring "Current Gaming Content" As Well As Classic Titles

Atari has revealed new details and images of its first console in over 20 years, the Ataribox. The company has said it wants to bring both "current" and "classic" gaming content to the new device, which will contain "modern internal specs."

Atari said in a newsletter to fans (via Kotaku AU) that its "objective is to create a new product that stays true to our heritage while appealing to both old and new fans of Atari." As such, it intends to launch two editions of its new console: a red/black version and a wood version. The company stated that both variants will possess "a smooth design, with ribs that flow seamlessly all around the body of the product, a front panel that can be either wood or glass, a front facing logo, indicator lights that glow through the material, and an array of new ports (HDMI, 4xUSB, SD).

"As you can guess, those ports suggest modern internal specs," the publisher added. "It also means that while we will be delivering classic gaming content, we will also be delivering current gaming content."

Take a look at the first images of the new device--which is separate to AtGames' NES Classic-like Flashback 8 microconsole--above. No price or release date have been announced for the Ataribox, which was first teased in June, though the company said "lots more information and status updates" will come as development progresses.

The last Atari console to launch was the Jaguar in 1993, but the releases of the original PlayStation and Sega Saturn in 1995 further hindered the Jaguar's already-struggling sales. Ultimately this lead to a decline in fortunes for Atari, which had previously pioneered the games industry in western markets with titles such as Pong, Pac-Man, and Space Invaders.

The Atari brand has since changed hands a number of times. More recently the majority of the company's business has been in publishing mobile games such as RollerCoaster Tycoon Touch, though the current owner of the Atari name--Atari SA, previously called Infogrames--is almost entirely separate from the original company from the '70s, '80s, and '90s.

So after all these years Atari has nothing new to bring to the table? So why bother releasing yet another box?

@IanNottinghamX: Thats an interesting statement. You see i got rid of my old Atari consoles long time ago. Now if this thing can play every Atari game ever made, its a great idea to release it.

@julittok: The scary part is that they will still work after all that time unlike the PS4 which died in just months if you drop it.

Great look. Really takes me back. But unless it's going to vie for king of the hill we already have plenty of also ran consoles and plenty of ways to play old games. If you want to win us over, give us the fastest console. Simple.

@itchyflop: In my case buying would be based on the style, i really dig the look. Another thing would be compatibility of games. So i still need to wait for plenty more details to decide if its worth purchase for me.

Modern content can mean many different things. I think it may turn out to be a sort of Android console. But if they decide to wow us and make it pretty powerful to hold its own; I'll be impressed.

@7tizz: I do agree with you on that. I was just wondering what they were meaning by modern content.

Is there much of a market for the same old Atari games that have homes on hundreds of retro consoles and game compilations? It would be nice if they updated the games for modern HDTVs and while they don't need cutting edge graphics, some more polish/eye appeal would be nice. While that would involve some degree of programming it should be anywhere near the expense of a complicated cutting edge game. Also, Atari really needs to get some of the Activision games to their retro packages as well. Particularly, Pitfall, Pitfall 2 (5200 version with the second chapter) and Hero. Lastly, Atari's best 2600 game was Solaris which hasn't been released on many retro Atari game products.

I was thinking that "Ataribox" sounds too closely like "Xbox". I believe the name ought to be something more in line with Atari's history. How about the Atari 9900?

Now that they've given us a sneak peak at what the console looks like, it leaves us wondering what kind of controllers will it have? They had better not be the bulky or unintuitive kinds from their past consoles. Wireless should be a given. Gamepad is nice, arcade stick would be just as good.

@Rambolike: Yes, because Ataris are so easy to find, their games are so easy to find, and the companies still make the games. And even if someone managed to still own an Atari AND bought a used copy of a game, Atari makes no profits at all. The person selling the game gets all the money. And all these mini consoles with built-in games is really just an emulation machine. I saw the Sega machine at Staples today and it's only $60, but comes with 80 games. It's like they're endorsing emulation by making these machines.

@rglgathrawn: It comes with 80 games. Games that you can't choose or don't even like. And 40-50 of them are garbage and suck anyway. And maybe about 20+ or less are good. Most of them are a throwaway and just filler. It's NOT worth the price at all.

If they only bring up old games it would suck since I can play all of them in any kind of hardware emulated and anything today runs the old games very easily... I see nintendo selling old black and white games for even around 10eur which is so god damn much jeez...
