Fassbender tells EW that he never played Assassin's Creed before being approached to star in the film back in 2012, something he's said in the past. But he's now played the game, in part to learn more about how the character moves through the world, physically.

"I've played it since [being offered the job] mainly to get an idea of the physicality of the character," Fassbender said.

Movie adaptations of video games don't have the best track record for quality. Fassbender said the production team is working hard to ensure that the film meets fans' expectations.

"We're striving to find something special," he said. "We believe the whole concept around it is special and want to service that the best we can. The fans are really passionate: very specific and they expect accuracy and historical detail. We're really trying to capitalize and feed on and enjoy the fun element. We're working hard to make this something special."

The Assassin's Creed movie opens in December 2016. The first official image of Fassbender in costume was released earlier this year.

Oscar-nominated Fassbender plays two characters: Callum Lynch and his 15th century Spanish assassin descendant Aguilar.

In other recent news about the film, a viral marketing campaign has begun, while some on-set images of Fassbender in costume leaked earlier this month. The movie is directed by Justin Kurzel, who recently helmed Macbeth, which also featured Fassbender in the lead role.

His Macbeth co-star Marion Cotillard will also appear in the Assassin's Creed movie, alongside Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, and Michael Kenneth Williams.

Ubisoft has at least six movies in the pipeline. In addition to Assassin's Creed, the Paris-based publisher is making movies based on its Far Cry, Rabbids, Watch Dogs, Splinter Cell, and Ghost Recon franchises. In all instances, Ubisoft will retain some level of creative control through its Ubisoft Motion Pictures group.
