Watch out Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo! A new version of the Android microconsole Ouya has been released in the US.

Retailing for $129, the new model promises an overhauled controller, improved Wi-Fi, and 16GB of storage--double that of the original model's 8GB. An official image for the new microconsole says the new Ouya revision comes in an anthracite finish, which is a very fancy way of saying matte black.

The new machine is scheduled for release only in North America for now.

One of the founding members of the Ouya, Muffi Ghadiali, quit the company this month.

The Ouya shot to prominence after a barnstorming Kickstarter campaign saw the company rack up $8.6 million in funding. It became available commercially in June 2013, although the company has never divulged exactly how many machines it has sold.

Earlier this week, a report suggested that an Android microconsole from Amazon would be released sometime in 2014, at a price below $300.

Better storage for what? Shitty games I can play on my phone? How about you make some games for it that are actually good and exclusive.

Okay, as cool of an idea the Ouya was, I believe everyone who actually wanted one of these purchased the original and sold it after a week. Seriously, I am seeing tons of preowned Ouyas for sale both at my local Game store and online for about £50-£60 ($100) There is no way this console can compete against the PS4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and even the Wii U! A bigger storage space and an "improved" controller won't cut the deal for many gamers.

I was more curious if they were going to update to a Tegra 4 or Tegra K1 processors or not...

<< LINK REMOVED >> Its a Tegra 3 - T33 Quad-Core. If you go to the ouya.tv site, it lists the hardware specification when you try to buy it. I think ill wait for the next update.

come on people "ouya" is not 'the real' console, the price alone is a dead give a way, but it would be nice to own, i think it has all the google playstore games, and a growing exclusive library, i'd say the ouya is like the lil engine that could, whether it sinks or swim is yet to be seen

i think its also due to the fact it was released waaaaaay toooo late, it should have released during the height/hype of angry birds (now i'm not saying the entire console should be based off 1 game, but as much as no one wants to praise that game, you can't deny its ginormous success), and they shoulda made it an exclusive, but now, angry birds died down and its multiplat, android fans kind of faded into obscurity, and its not even released worldwide yet

i'd still buy one if its around the 100 - 120 pricerange

thats pretty cheap for a console, i'm sure everyone with an android phone has his/her fav game, so it would nice to play it on the big screen and carry it around because its portable and a proper controller (i see people playing SF4 on their phones, thats crazy, i can't even throw 3 hadokens in a row) so yeah someone is gonna say you can hook your phone to the tv, download 3rd party apps for controllers and all that except i've never seen anyone do that or look into it, so i think the ouya bridges the gap and in that sense i'd support them

<< LINK REMOVED >> My thing is the only way I would buy a Ouya is if there weren't any other platforms around. Price point doesn't matter one bit. It could be 20 bucks and I still wouldn't bother. Way too many games to play on much better options to play them on.

<< LINK REMOVED >> with a name like tightwad, i thought you'd be more iffy with your spendings lol j/k while i might not be able to change your view on the ouya with it being a 'console', portability, complete android market, android OS so i'm sure it shares all the android exploits, customizations (pulling it apart with a screw driver won't void the warrenty), the ouya started off as a kickstarter project and only asked for $950,000 it received $8,596,474 so there are supporters at the time of production, where'd they all go, i don't know, personally i'd like to think of the ouya somewhere along the lines of what nintendo has become, its by no means a 'must have' console, its underpowered, it is waay cheaper than its competitors (x1, ps4, x360, ps3) if you think nintendo is for casual gamers.this is probably aimed at the even more casual/laid back gamers angry birds, bejewelled, candy crash etc, there are action, shooters and god of war clones, but i think the highlight of the android market is the simplicity, mindless and easy going nature of its games thats the highlight, its probably more along the lines of what you find on xbla/psn store minis, i'd say the ouya and nintendo is becoming abit of niche console, it won't appeal to the mass audience, but it'll appeal to those that are chasing it for a specific reason

<< LINK REMOVED >> I guess I'm a tightwad sometimes and sometimes not, LOL. But I did gather some money by not spending it on shit I don't need, no debt, etc. I don't think Nintendo is for the casual crowd only. Especially not the 3DS. That is one amazing handheld gem. But even if the Ouya had more games that appealed to me, I still wouldn't be getting one seeing how I can't keep up with all the games I want to play on my PS3 and 3DS with the PS4 coming sometime after I beat Dark Souls two a few times.

that's the most sarcastic sentence I've yet read in a GameSpot article

Avatar image for andmcq

<< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think it's sarcasm. I think if Ouya really put a big effort in they could steal three sales from Sony, MS and Nintendo combined. That's three whole sales, that's like $1000 in revenue. That's huge.

Avatar image for tightwad34

<< LINK REMOVED >> Even if it isn't sarcasm. it will never compete with the big three. Nothing even close to the games they have.

I like it in matte black. The controller being all black looks much better and far less cheap/tacky than the grey/silver version with the black touch area in the middle. In terms of pure design it now actually looks like a serious console.

What they really need is a more updated mobile GPU chipset, along with a slew of nice games for the system. I understand they're not trying to take down or compete much against bigger console companies and just more catering to a "microconsole" niche, but still, even for that niche, the things that needed more focus was an updated mobile GPU as well as a selection of games built just for OUYA rather than just being largely second-hand smartphone games.

They just released two of their more anticipated titles in Killing Floor: Calamity and Soul Fjord. Ouya 2 will have a stronger chipset, but that's probably a year away.

Avatar image for MacroManJr

@kujel @ChiefFreeman Don't act like your guessing is any certainty here. You're completely bullshitting here. You don't even have a single shred of substantiation for that mere claim. You don't have to resort to exaggeration just to defend the OUYA.

The PS4 from Sony is doing very well in sales. The Xbox One is also doing pretty well for itself. At the very least, Sony will never be a faded memory--the PS2 at the very least will always be cement in gaming history and well-remembered as the most successful and most popular console of all time as of yet. Xbox likewise has its place in history.

If anything, it's more likely that OUYA would become the faded memory, along with the other failed products of history like the WonderSwan and every other unsuccessful product we've forgotten about. Though, I have nothing against the OUYA. Unlike you, I don't have to bash what I don't have much interest in myself, just to feel like my opinion's validated.

I think it was a rather neat little idea at first, but in reality, hardly anyone cares to play mobile Android games (of all games) on a microconsole, except the small niche who supported it. Between free games on platforms like Steam and Desura, and free emulators widely available, most gamers find most of the value of the OUYA elsewhere.

I don't speak against the OUYA's fans' hope for this "microconsole" concept, though--I realize that, to them, it's not a failure. If they find value in it, then they're getting out of it what they want and all that they could expect. But in the scheme of things overall, just as a product, it's already a faded memory.

Avatar image for MacroManJr

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Well, I do doubt they have most of the 8 million still left. I'm not sure if you're aware of just how expensive even a product such as a microconsole is to produce, maintain and distribute. The 8 million was just to get them started, mostly. I can't speak on the issue of any "15 million they got from venture capitalists," so I wont'.

There's no indication of that. They're still making games, consoles (hence the article), and advertisements. They probably have alot of the 8 mill they got via KS and another 15mill they got from venture capitalists.
