New 16GB Ouya revision out now, promises better controller and storage

Latest Ouya revision comes in a matte black finish and will set you back $129.

Watch out Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo! A new version of the Android microconsole Ouya has been released in the US.

Retailing for $129, the new model promises an overhauled controller, improved Wi-Fi, and 16GB of storage--double that of the original model's 8GB. An official image for the new microconsole says the new Ouya revision comes in an anthracite finish, which is a very fancy way of saying matte black.

The new machine is scheduled for release only in North America for now.

One of the founding members of the Ouya, Muffi Ghadiali, quit the company this month.

The Ouya shot to prominence after a barnstorming Kickstarter campaign saw the company rack up $8.6 million in funding. It became available commercially in June 2013, although the company has never divulged exactly how many machines it has sold.

Earlier this week, a report suggested that an Android microconsole from Amazon would be released sometime in 2014, at a price below $300.

The Kickstarter posterchild android console. I kinda want them to succeed. The Ouya is the underdog against Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. At least they have fixed the controller. Which was very cheaply made and prone to falling apart. So doubling the 8GB storage to 16GB has put the Ouya at the same storage size as the PSP Go. The Ouya could have gone for 32GB of storage and reached the Wii U level.

This would have been a great marketing moment for Ouya and would have made Nintendo's 32GB of on board flash memory seem very limited. By 16GB of flash memory is more than enough for Android games. Not sure if the idea of playing Smartphone games on a full size television will ever catch on.

Ouya is trying to find a niche. Android games might be fine on a Samsung smartphone or even a Sony Xperia series of Phones. but just not compelling enough for the living room big screen T.V

Poor Ouya is without a real reason to exist.

<< LINK REMOVED >> You do realize Ouya has Ouya games not android games, you can't really properly use android games on Ouya, they have to be developed for it else they don't work well.

Totally agree. I just don't see the appeal or market for these.

The appeal for Microconsoles will probably take effect 3-5 years from now when microprocessors become powerful enough to pump out ps3-or-better graphics for the fraction of the cost. Tegra 5 can now play BF3 and the Frostbyte and Unreal engines are being developed for mobile.

When entertainment consoles become Ouya's size and can promise AAA gaming at a small price then more people will embrace microcosoles. For now it's a niche market that still has alot of useful features.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Graphics aren't everything. You still have to have enough power for better AI, bigger content, better online multiplayer, and some sort of advantage in multimedia. The Xbox One is a TV entertainment hub. The PS4 is a livestream-gaming hotspot. Even the Wii U allows for away-from-TV entertainment. The OUYA, on the other hand, just lets you play a bunch of services and games that are widely available and in many cases free elsewhere.

The problem with the Ouya is that most core gamers would rather pay to have a high end device device such as Sony's or Microsoft's consoles rather than buying an inferior console. Some of us (myself included) are willing to shell out even more on a high end PC. If you aren't a core gamer, you can play games on your phone, your tablet, or even your laptop. Those gamers who are really hurting for cash can buy an older system. The 4 GB Xbox 360 can be had for $200 and has a much better library than the Ouya. If you can't afford that, you can pick up a GameCube and a nice selection of games on Ebay for well under the price of the Ouya. Simply put, the Ouya's market is very small and I'm actually surprised they haven't given up on that system.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The 4GB Xbox 360 is a poor choice all around. It can't play any game that requires an installation unless you plug in a flash drive, and even then there's a 50/50 chance it won't work for any myriad of reasons. A high-end PC is great to have, but too heavy and fragile to move from room to room or (in my case) anywhere near the TV, no to mention a poor choice for playing with friends in the house. Getting a Gamecube means you have a cheap and well-built system, but if you aren't a fan of Nintendo's first-party games then the system has little to offer but Resident Evil and some good Star Wars titles, or multiplatform games that were much better on other systems.

The Ouya finds its market with people who want a cheap, highly portable system that compliments their existing set-up or allows them to play classic titles without all the baggage that comes with a PC. That might be a niche market, but its a niche that needs to be filled.

And have THIRTEEN to choose from. That totally won't confuse a casual gamer consumer.

500 Games and maybe 20 of them actually worth buying and owning. This machine is like a Beta Testing machine for all Indie games. i honestly don't want to test 500 games to find out which are good and which are horrible. I'm glad they went back and fixed the controller, but that was just one of many, many reason not to get a Ouya. If you have an Android Tablet or Smart Phone, you'll never need this system.

The problem with ouya wasn't the colour or storage size, it was the lack of games that were interesting enough to want to play on your TV and not just on your phone.

If your Pc is upstairs and your living room/ entertainment system is downstairs that could be a problem. The Ouya has portability on its side so you can pack it up and take it elsewhere to emu with friends. Not to mention its only 100 bucks. Peoplespend more money on coffee in a month.

I think the Ouya is a misguided project.

It honestly looks like it's supposed to be sold to indie devs who want to develop a game developed around a traditional twin-stick controller without having to worry about paying for expensive licenses for Xbox and Playstation consoles.
