Netflix's Witcher Has Finished Production

"It has been an incredible journey."

The Witcher is one of the most anticipated upcoming shows over the next few months. The show, adapted from the popular novels turned video game series, is set to hit Netflix in the last three months of 2019, and it has now been confirmed that production has finished on Season 1.

The news comes via star Henry Cavill, who plays Geralt of Rivia. He took to Instagram to post about the "incredible journey" of making the show. "Season 1 of The Witcher has finally come to an end," he wrote. "And although I'm pulling a face here it has been an incredible journey! The cast and crew worked tirelessly throughout, everyone pitched in and brought their A game to set and I couldn't be more proud of you all." The post was accompanied by a picture of Cavill in a make-up chair--check it out below:

The Witcher's showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich also marked the end of production on Twitter. "That's a wrap on season one," she wrote. "I have enough gray hair to play Geralt now, but it's been the best year of my life. So grateful to the writers, the cast, and the exceptional crew who worked their asses off to make the Continent come to life."

The show is also set to star Freya Allan (Into the Badlands) as Ciri and Anya Chalotra (Wanderlust) as Yennifer, two notable names from the series. We've not seen any footage yet, although you can check out Cavill's first screen test, which showed him donning Geralt's iconic silver mane.

The Witcher will run for eight episodes, and is based on the fantasy novel series written by Andrzej Sapkowski, from which the games are also adapted. Sapkowski has worked on the English language drama series as a creative consultant.

As for the Witcher game series, the newest instalment was 2015's The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. No new projects in the series have been announced, and developer CD Projekt Red is now working on the much-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077.

Let's not forget Henry Cavill is also a gamer, he played a lot of World of Warcraft before he was the man of steel. Although he may not look like us with his handsome face and ripped body, he is definitely one of us. We ought to show him some support!

Think I’ll avoid watching this just like every other live action adaptation type thing. Might’ve helped if I liked the game.. would’ve been more interested if it was in anime form.

So the really big question- seeing that netflix made this is- will the witcher get woke, maybe find his "other" side.

I'll give them a chance. Low budget doesn't really bother me if the writing and acting are done well. I'll judge after I see the full season. Dark (another NF show) has proven to me that you can't judge an entire series on its first couple of episodes. Dark, imo, is the best Netflix series.

@srfilk86: How do you know that this is low budget? I have to believe that this is not a low budget production and they did put a little bit of money into this, especially knowing that they have a celebrity that is hot right now in the public eye with his big budget films as Superman.

Like most I'll try to maintain some cautious optimism. The casting is very distracting for sure.

I certainly hope the final product's visual depiction of Geralt won't look anything like that horrible test footage. If he grew a beard and shaved his temples, Cavill could look solid. I know it's not canon, but I far prefer the Witcher 3's depictions. Also much easier to make a bearded actor and character look alike than without.

I'm not so concerned with Cavill's acting; he and Geralt have about the same emotional range...

But it can be distracting when a heavily typecasted actor plays yet another iconic "hero" character.

As opposed to a less recognizable actor who could more easily be molded into said role.

We also know virtually nothing of how the show is written (for all we know the actual story could be great).

Time will tell.

Terrible casting for Geralt. Geralt is a gritty badass, Cavill has the grit of a polished turd.

Too bad.

@ministersin420: Geralt in the books is actually more vain than the video game version. He's far more into vanity and keeping clean shaven than CDPR would have you believe. Witcher 3 was great, but Witcher 1 was far more accurate of Geralt.

@srfilk86: This. Not sure why everyone thinks that Geralt from TW3 is the "canon" Geralt.

More people need to pick up the books before automatically assuming that Cavill couldn't nail the character. I'm not saying he can, but other than the distraction of looking at him and thinking of supes, Cavill could be a decent choice.

@srfilk86: Hmm i didnt find him particularly vain, he just hated facial hair cause it annoyed him. Geralt was always a hard man, Cavill looks like a pretentious fop or noble socialite, which is so far from Geralt's brooding and dark personality. Should have been Mads Mikkelsen, i have severe man crush on that guy.

@ministersin420: Mads has always been my number one choice, but Cavill could do it alright. We'll see.

Now I know why Geralt was able to deal with so much punishment in The Witcher 3. It’s because he was really superman!

It will get a season 2 due to high viewing figures but I just can't see it being good enough to warrant a season 3...

@skittymiao: True, but the vast majority of people who have netflix will be all "Huh? He doesn't look like a witch. Skin's not green."

Far more people have netflix than play games, after all.
