The full trailer of the Netflix fantasy series Shadow and Bone has been released. The eight-episode show is an adaptation of Leigh Bardugo's novels and it releases on April 23.

The series focuses on a girl named Alina (Jessie Mei Li), an orphan in the war-torn land of Ravka, who possesses incredible powers. There are various factions who want to harness her abilities, including General Kirigan (Westworld's Ben Barnes), and the show looks like a visually spectacular addition to the ever-growing roster of small screen fantasy shows. Check it out below.

Shadow and Bone also stars Kit Young (Endeavour), Amita Suman (The Outpost), and Freddy Carter (Pennyworth) as members of the criminal Six of Crows gang. Shadow and Bone adapts two separate book series by Bardugo, known collectively as the Grishaverse--the Grisha trilogy and the Six of Crows duology. Shadow and Bone was the first Grishaverse novel and it was published in 2012.

In a recent interview with Collider, showrunner Eric Heisserer spoke about the challenges of combining the two different book series. "[It was done] very carefully," he said. "It required building some story, a prequel worth of story for most of the characters, so that we don't break anything in Leigh Bardugo's timeline. I had her on speed dial and there was a lot of me calling, 'So what about this?' She's like, 'No, because then so and so..' Okay right!"

Shadow and Bone is one of many big fantasy shows on the way to streaming services. The second series of the Netflix hit The Witcher arrives later this year, and there's also a prequel spin-off series titled The Witcher: Blood Origin in the works. Amazon has two highly-anticipated shows on the way too--the upcoming Lord of the Rings series and an adaptation of the classic Wheel of Time series of novels. there's also the Game of Thrones spin-off House of the Dragon in production for HBO.
