Netflix's Jessica Jones And Punisher Canceled, But Marvel Gives Fans Hope For Return

"To be continued...!"

Netflix's Jessica Jones and Punisher series' have been canceled. Deadline reports that Season 3 of Jessica Jones will still air on the streaming service, but it will mark the end of her run. The Punisher, meanwhile, will not return, having had Season 2 release on Netflix in January 2019.

This seemingly brings Marvel and Netflix's relationship as it pertains to creating new shows to an end. The streaming service has already called time on its Daredevil, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist shows, which means The Defenders are no more. Netflix has indicated that the shows will remain on Netflix for subscribers to watch, however.

Now Playing: Netflix's The Punisher And Jessica Jones Canceled, But Marvel Gives Fans Hope For Return - GameSpot Universe News Update

"Marvel's The Punisher will not return for a third season on Netflix," reads a statement issued to Deadline. "Showrunner Steve Lightfoot, the terrific crew, and exceptional cast including star Jon Bernthal, delivered an acclaimed and compelling series for fans, and we are proud to showcase their work on Netflix for years to come.

"In reviewing our Marvel programming, we have decided that the upcoming third season will also be the final season for Marvel's Jessica Jones. We are grateful to showrunner Melissa Rosenberg, star Krysten Ritter, and the entire cast and crew, for three incredible seasons of this groundbreaking series, which was recognized by the Peabody Awards among many others."

Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb has also released a statement, saying that the company was thrilled by the stories it told with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Punisher. He went on to reflect on the achievement of bringing together the characters and talked up the talent that contributed to doing so.

"Marvel assembled amazing teams to write, produce, direct, edit, and score 13 seasons and 161 one-hour episodes. Take a moment and go online and look at the dazzling list of actors, writers, directors, and musicians who graced us with the very best of their craft. We loved each and every minute of it. And we did it all for you--the fans--who cheered for us around the world and made all the hard work worth it."

Interestingly, his statement also indicated that it was Netflix's decision to drop the shows, and suggested that Marvel isn't done with the characters. "Our network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters ... but you know Marvel better than that," he teased. "As Matthew Murdock's Dad once said, 'The measure of a man is not how he gets knocked to the mat, it's how he gets back up.' To be continued...!"

Of course, Marvel is owned by Disney and it has been speculated that these characters could have a future on Disney's own streaming service, which is called Disney+. The service will be home to Season 7 of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and another new live-action Star Wars series called The Mandalorian. Disney has also confirmed TV shows based on "beloved superheroes" that may not have had their own spotlight on the big screen. One of these is a show based on fan-favorite character Loki.

Disney's Kevin Mayer, the chairman in charge of direct-to-consumer offers, previously said that migrating Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Punisher is a possibility.

The butcher Frank Castle looks like a real man wearing The Punisher Vest. I wonder why Marvel does not give a particularly specified costume to Castle. A character is known both by his nature and the wardrobe he wears

Disney will not be making any new episodes to the netflix shows and has stated they will not make any new series based off them. And you can be sure you'll never see Punisher again. Hell I would bet well never get deadpool rated R again being they already tried testing the PG waters for it. It's a shame Punishers been one of my favorite marvel characters since the 80s. But unless somebody buys the rights for Punisher Disney well make sure to bury that character. Not politically correct enough for them.

Disney:"Triple the cost for the rights to the shows Netflix is making for us."

Netflix:"F you. Shows are canceld. You can keep the rights."

Disney to the fans:"Our network partner may have decided they no longer want to continue telling the tales of these great characters ..."

Gotta keep that lack of accountability.

The third season of Jessica Jones needs to be really good if it is going to bring me back, as I could not even finish season 2. So poorly written with annoying characters and a really boring antagonist. And JJ herself felt like a one note character who does not seem to grow at all. If Disney somehow can refresh these shows with better writing I am all for it, but that is not likely.

@christhunder34: You mean the KNOWN anti-semite, who desperately tried to use the Federal Government to stop the unionizing of his animators by claiming they were all communist sympathizers, is rolling over in his grave for his company "turning evil"?

Number one, no shit they were canceled. All the other Netflix Marvel shows were, why would these be any different?
Number two, if Disney picks up Punisher, you can expect not to see anything like Jigsaw's "Origin" scene again.

Netflix is allegedly $2 Billion in debt, they're cancelling much more than just the Marvel shows. As for Disney's streaming service, I'd like to think it would be great, with archives of classic shorts, tv shows and specials as far back as the 1930's. But I know that, like everything Disney, their streaming content is going to mainly be contemporary programming that conforms to their insatiable merchandising campaign.

So I'll probably end up subscribing to neither and go back to using my WD Player and external hard drives for all my viewing entertainment.

@professor_megaman:

I wouldn’t be too concerned about Netflix being $2bn in debt when they have 130M subscribers paying approx $10/mth each. That $2bn is probably production expenses for all the movies and shows they have in development. Hopefully they’re spending big on some of their new shows like The Witcher.

i'm glad they ended in a good spot. most series severely suffer from too many seasons and dragged storylines. of course i wish they would've made a better defenders, but they didn't and at least we got that scene where they all have dinner together and we have Jessica making fun of Matt's costume a couple of times.

a.k.a. "Netflix is receiving kickbacks from Disney to quietly cancel all of the Marvel shows so they can later be continued on Disney's streaming service once it launches."

...and to anyone yelling "OMFG DISNEY DOESN'T DO MATURE ANYTHING", wait and see. Disney isn't stupid; they know there's a market for what they've done, and we're going to continue getting the same stuff.

You think they won't do a rated-R Deadpool sequel? ROTFL

@cheeseweasel24: Disney+ will not have R-rated content. It wont happen. You're not going to have happy parents that get it so thier kids can watch Lady and the Tramp then cruse over to Deadpool or Logan. Given Logans R rating and the Netflix shows (Mainly DD and punisher) having very similar mature content, you will not see shows like it on Disney+. Atleast now as we know them now. They will either be put on Hulu or be watered down so bad that they wont be anything like what we loved. It may work for DD and the rest, but it wont work for Punisher.

Not "To be continued..." It's DONE!

Disney does NOT do mature rated shows/movies. It wouldn't do it any justice on Disney. I'm moving on as should everyone else. Witcher Resident Evil shows and even Umbrella Academy is what I'm looking forward to and watching. I'm not paying for two streaming services so one will be paid and the other well...see you online.

@d-d_megadoodoo: I will be giving Witcher a try, but Caville's acting is wooden....the skill level leaves something to be desired (unlike the guy who played Daredevil for example) and he looks bizarre and too jacked as Geralt. I totally agree with you though that Disney will basically just take more beloved IPs it bought up and shit all over them.

I really loved these shows to begin with. Daredevil was a gritty, more realistic show that felt grounded. Jessica Jones & Luke Cage started off great too.

Unfortunately they kinda lost their way. I stopped watching the latest Daredevil season after about 7 eps & I haven't touched the latest Punisher offering. Maybe there are just too many of them & I'm feeling burned out on super heroes or maybe the storytelling has gone downhill. Hard to say, but I've completely lost interest.

@bbq_R0ADK1LL:

Pretty much all of them are slow, dark, and underwhelming. Marvel just cannot do small screen for the life of them. It's either go big or go home as far as their universe goes. The Arrowverse is the opposite of the small screen MCU...and its free.

Sad, but at least we will still have one more season of Jessica Jones after an entertaining season of the Punisher. I was never a big fan of Daredevil, but it was entertaining enough.

Jessica Jones being the last canceled is totally political. It should have been the first to go, but there would have been a backlash for not respecting wahmen.

@streamline: In a world not gone mad, Jessica Jones would never have gotten a 3rd season. The scheduling had nothing to do with Luke Cage and Iron Fist getting canceled first. Fact is that Netflix had the rights, they just chose to give them up and gave up Jessica Jones last due to politics. They made a BIG deal about season 2 being all female directors. To cancel it afterwards would be a slight on them.
