Inside Job, Netflix's animated homage to shows like The X-Files, was recently renewed for a second season, but that's no longer the case. The streaming service canceled the series that was created by Gravity Falls alumni Shion Takeuchi and co-executive produced by Takeuchi and Gravity Falls creator Alex Hirsh.

Takeuchi announced the cancellation Sunday evening on Twitter. "I'm heartbroken to confirm that Netflix has decided to cancel season 2 of Inside Job,” she posted. "Over the years, these characters have become real people to me, and I am devastated not to be able to watch them grow up."

The project fell under Takeuchi and Hirsch's development deal with the streaming giant and was the first adult-animation series produced in-house by Netflix Animation Studios.

The series had been renewed back in June of last year before the second part of Season 1 had hit Netflix. Season 1, Part 1 premiered with 10 episodes on Netflix in October 2021, and Part 2 debuted this past November with another eight.

Inside Job is about the shadow government and the dysfunctional team whose daily grind is committing the world's greatest conspiracies. Their day-to-day operations involve complicated cover-ups to secret societies and even masked orgy etiquette. The focus was on agent Reagan Ridley (voiced by Lizzy Caplan) who believes the world could be a better place. Reagan thinks she can make a difference if only she could manage her manic, by-the-book father (voiced by Christian Slater).

"Reagan and Brett deserved to get their ending and finally find happiness," Takeuchi added in her tweet. "And I would have loved to been able to share what was in store with you all."
