Netflix Is Making An Anime Pacific Rim Show
Following the news earlier this week that Netflix has a slate of new animated movies and TV shows on the way, it has been reported that the company is also developing several new anime shows. These include a series based on the Pacific Rim movies, as well as a spin-off from its own sci-fi show Altered Carbon.
According to Deadline, Netflix has five new anime shows in development. Pacific Rim will continue the story of the two live-action movies, which center around the epic futuristic battle between giant mecha Jaegers and monstrous Kaiju. The show will focus on two young siblings who find an abandoned Jaeger while trying to find their missing parents.
Altered Carbon will be set in the same universe as the show, which is based on Richard Morgan's acclaimed cyberpunk novel and premiered on Netflix earlier this year. Deadline states that the anime series will "explore new elements of the story mythology." Season 2 of the live-action show is due in 2019.
The other new anime shows on the way include Cagaster of an Insect Cage, which is based on the manga and is set in a futuristic world where a disease turns people into murderous insects. There's also Yasuke, which combines sci-fi and samurai influences and will feature a lead role for Atlanta's Lakeith Stanfield, and Trese, which is a supernatural gangster story. The new anime shows will be made by a variety of Japanese animation studios, including Anima, Gonzo, and MAPPA.
These latest additions to Netflix's animated roster indicate that the company is increasingly pushing into that area, ahead of the launch of Disney's streaming service next year. As well as the six titles announced earlier this week, we also know that Guillermo Del Toro will direct a new musical animated movie of Pinnochio for the company. This follows the news that Netflix plans to launch its own animation studio, which will enable it to make projects in-house without having to outsource much of the technical work to existing animation companies.
