Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog - Official New Trailer

The streaming giant has stated that the new Sonic series will be a 3D animated show, and will hit the service in 2022. The tweet read, "Rings? Check. Sneakers? Check. Speed? SONIC. SEGA’s legendary video game icon Sonic the Hedgehog races onto Netflix in a new 3D animated series from @SEGA, @WildBrainHQ and @ManOfActionEnt premiering in 2022."

Of course, this won't be the first animated Sonic show. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog ran for 65 episodes in 1993, while a series simply titled Sonic the Hedgehog ran for 40 episodes between '93 and '94. In addition, there have been several anime Sonic releases, including Sonic the Hedgehog in 1996 and Sonic X in 2003. Most recently, a CGI-animated show titled Sonic Boom screened on Cartoon Network in 2014, while 2018's Sonic Mania Adventures was a series of animated shorts released to YouTube to promote the game Sonic Mania Plus.

As for the recent Sonic movie, in May, it was reported that a sequel is on the way. Director Jeff Fowler and writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are all set to return, but the film doesn't have a release date yet.
