Streaming giant Netflix has given the green light for a new season of its hit historical drama The Last Kingdom. The cast has confirmed on social media that The Last Kingdom will return for Season 5.

In a two-minute Instagram video, various cast members announced the news of The Last Kingdom's renewal. According to Variety, Season 5 will consist of 10 episodes, though a release date has yet to be confirmed. The renewal comes approximately three months after the release of The Last Kingdom Season 4, which arrived on Netflix on April 26.

The Last Kingdom is based on a series of novels called The Saxon Stories by historical fiction author Bernard Cornwell. There are 13 books in total, with the latest, War Lord, scheduled to publish this October.

The Last Kingdom Season 5 will be based on the ninth and tenth entries of The Saxon Stories. According to Variety, these books see protagonist Uhtred, a warrior-born Saxon raised as a Dane played by Alexander Dreymon, coming to grips with the revelation that his destiny is tied to the future of England.

The historical drama started as a BBC series for two seasons before getting picked up by Netflix in 2018. Season 4 of The Last Kingdom premiered to much praise from both critics and fans; the show has an audience score of 97% on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes.
