NES Classic Editions Are Back at GameStop Today, But Probably Not for Long

Another shot at getting one before Christmas.

The NES Classic Edition remains hard to track down without paying a premium, even a month after launch. You may have the opportunity to pick one up soon, as GameStop says more units are arriving today.

"Limited quantities" of the $60 console are coming to GameStop stores today and tomorrow, December 15 and 16, according to a press release. The retailer recommends checking GameStop's website or calling your local store to find out more details.

Preorders for the console, which plays 30 classic NES games, quickly sold out earlier this year. The limited supply of consoles available on launch day in November went just as quickly. The ensuing weeks have become a competition to be the first to buy one when it comes back in stock, but they often disappear in a matter of minutes.

Some retailers have tried alternative approaches to first-come, first-served. ThinkGeek (a subsidiary of GameStop), for instance, randomly selected people with one on their wishlist and offered them 24 hours to buy the console. Amazon, meanwhile, has diverted some of its stock to its physical storefronts and Prime Now locations.

Nintendo has promised additional systems will continue to be made available during the holiday shopping season. With Christmas 10 days away, though, it's become clear that you won't be able to easily walk into a store and pick one up by then.

@Kalbent: Let's put it this way, you'll find Bigfoot before a NES Classic at it's actual retail price.

Hey, that's pretty good. Well, it is a mini version of it and cost $60(that's not bad). And it has built in games, too. WOW!!!

Why are people buying these when you can just get all these games on Wii U easily?

@Paulf001: I have a feeling 90% of people who want these aren't in it just for the games. They probably want it as a display item because it looks nice. It's a novelty.

@Paulf001: Why would they get it for Wii U when they can get it for free with a PC emulator?

@logicxx: Built one a few months ago. Got the 8bitdo SNES retro controller as well and the pi doubles as an SNES system as well.

I can see why people want this though, plus a lot of people aren't that technical, and it can be a bit intimidating for a 1st timer to build a rasberrypi. In reality though, it's basically just a matter of formatting a micro SD card and copying the needed files to it. The system takes care of most of the rest on start up and will format a usb flash drive for copying the files to the system. Only thing the user needs to configure is as the aspect ratio if it's off, some wifi settings and pair and configure the controller.

@logicxx: That's exactly what I did. Now I have hundreds of game on my "NES" with a wireless PS4 controller.

I can also play mario 64 at 720p resolution.
