The latest trailer for Demonic has been released. The new horror movie from District 9 director Neill Blomkamp releases on August 20.

Demonic focuses on a woman who enters some sort of VR simulation to make contact with her mom, who went on a violent rampage but is now in a coma. But the simulation starts spilling over into reality, and soon she is being stalked by some shadowy demonic creature. It's hard to know exactly what direction the movie will go from there, but there's no denying it looks like an ambitious mix of sci-fi and possession horror. Check the trailer out below:

Demonic stars Carly Pope (Elysium), Nathalie Boltt (Riverdale), Terry Chen (Legends of Tomorrow), Chris William Martin (Supergirl), and Michael Rogers (The Blacklist). It will hit theaters and Video on Demand platforms on August 20.

To create the simulation sequences, the movie uses a new method of "volumetric capture," which the distributors IFC Midnight describe as "a three-dimensional video technology that turns actors into geometric objects." Apparently, the volumetric capture in Demonic is "the most ever seen in a feature film."

Demonic is Blomkamp's fourth feature film, following District 9 (2009), Elysium (2013), and Chappie (2015). He was previously attached to a new Alien movie and a Robocop reboot, but neither of these projects is happening with him involved. Blomkamp recently spoke about a potential sequel to District 9 and revealed that he is currently working on the script.
