Need for Speed skips 2014; first year without one in over a decade

EA reveals it won't put out a new Need for Speed until 2015 to allow time for an "extended development window."

Last year's Need for Speed Rivals

When you think of franchises released annually, you might only think of games like Madden and Call of Duty, but a new Need for Speed has come out each and every year for even longer than Call of Duty has existed. Now, for the first time since 2001, Need for Speed will skip a year as developer Ghost Games takes its time in creating the newest entry in the series.

As part of EA's report to investors today, the company revealed Need for Speed developer Ghost Games is being given time for an "extended development window" to work on the next game in the series, which will not be released until next year.

Expanding on that, Ghost Games GM Marcus Nilsson shared a statement on Need for Speed's website pledging to deliver the game fans want. "We are already deep in development on our next game and want to make this promise to you: we will listen to you. We're going to give you the game you've been asking for. It will be the game you deserve, but to do that will take us some time," he said.

Nilsson talked up the new game coming in 2015, describing it as "highly innovative" and an "experience built on a foundation we know you'll greatly look forward to."

Just because the game won't be out until next year doesn't mean Ghost plans to go silent. "From now on, you'll be hearing from us regularly because we need your help to shape the future of Need for Speed," Nilsson explained. "We want your input on future gameplay and features we know you're passionate about. We will keep innovating, always making sure to continue the celebration of cars and the joy they bring."

Need for Speed's streak of annual releases extends back to the '90s if you count the spinoff games. In 2001, EA released MMO racing game Motor City Online (which was at one time a Need for Speed game) in lieu of an official Need for Speed title. A year later, it released Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit 2, kicking off a trend of releasing a proper Need for Speed game annually up through last year, when it released Need for Speed Rivals.

Rivals is a pretty good Need for Speed game but its always online nature ruined that game for me. I would like to pause the game, leave and restart a race at any time. Please Ghost, spare some of us that just want to play offline.

Oh yeah, i'm still waiting for a day when we can enjoy Porsche on other racing game franchises. Come on EA, unless you gonna make a new Porsche Unleashed, please share those sweet 918 Spyder and 911 GT3 RS to everyone.

In my opinion the best Need for Speed game is Need for Speed Underground 1.

It's funny considering this is the 20th anniversary of NFS and they have no game to deliver. Not complaining about how they are taking time to make a better game but still. ;)

Yeah!!! thank to god, we don't get a NFS game this year. I remember the old NFS 1-2-3, each game was great with new changes, but now,.... each version is play the same track 20 times because you have 20 cars... oh sry... I forgot something, 20 time plus if you are playing it on back track format.

Dear EA,

Since ya not gonna release a new need for speed game until next year might i advise you take the opportunity to revive the Road Rash series for all platforms!!! because i'm pretty certain most people would agree that you should revive this franchise since it's long overdue. lol

Haven't heard much about Criterion Games recently. Hope this means they have been working on a next-gen Burnout title...

It would be very exciting to see a next-gen game like old NFS games with high car customization.

That's good news! They have been complete shit in whole last decade. Previous remotely good one was Carbon and Pro Street was decent other than those two last deace = SHIT! Almost forgot, but the firs Shift was ok too. But all these Criterion crap was shit and the latest.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Criterion was brought in to fix was was terrible. Criterion was probably the best thing to happen to the series, in fact.

But, to each his own.

I wish they could develop something similar to NFS Porsche Unleashed, where you had an evolution mode from 1950s to 2000s. And then we used to have complete control over our cars. Very customizable car parts, gear ratios, tire pressure & so on.

I am so glad to hear this. Even though I have liked all of the NFSs so far I really think this is a good idea. This way we can get a NFS that offers so much more then what we've been getting. My favorite NFS of all time was High Stakes and right behind that was the original Most Wanted. I really hope they go back to doing a really deep NFS like High Stakes, Most Wanted or the Underground games. I really miss those NFSs with huge open worlds with tons of customization. Being able to make your car unique to your style is so much more fun then just unlocking the cars themselves. With games like The Crew and Driveclub coming out they really need to step up their game. I will buy it anyway but now I really have high hopes. I can't wait.

hot pursuit was the last NFS I bought. it was nice though a bit repetetive, but then it hit me like a pickup truck hitting a fox when I "finished" the game only to discover it doesn't finish. Then we have the run which is sort as hell(2 and a half assed hours to finish, fortunately I played it at an internet station), the new Most wanted which is essentially a reskinned, hot pursuitesque burnout paradise, and rivals which is more hot pursuitesque racing. Their multiplayer focus, besides stinking with EA's DRM scemes, can make the game useless after a year.

Needless to say I lost interest, though I wish to be surprised.

Am I the only one who really liked NFS Shift? If they made a game like shift with the same physics, cockpit views and awesome sense of speed, but with customization and street racing I would buy it. Imagine a semi-realistic street racer with a cockpit view and maybe an open world, the idea is fantastic and certainly doable.

That's because not one would buy it. There are a lot of other anticipated racing games coming out this year. The Crew, Driverclub, Project CARS, GRID: Autosport, Next Car Game and more. There is no place for a same-as-last-year NFS.

About time. Rivals was rushed and came out in a terrible state. Many other NFS games have been rushed as well.

The games could really use a longer development time.
