Need for Speed Series Had Too Many Games, Too Quickly, Dev Says

A reboot was necessary, the series' producer said.

GameSpot may get a commission from retail offers.

Between 2002 and 2013, at least one Need for Speed game came out every year. In 2011, publisher EA actually launched two NFS games, Shift 2: Unleashed and The Run. But the publisher and developer Ghost Games took last year off, and they now are working on a reboot of the series. In a new interview, executive producer Marcus Nilsson explained this move by stating that there were simply too many NFS games released too quickly.

Speaking to Official Xbox Magazine (via GamesRadar), Nilsson admitted that there were so many games released that it had become confusing for consumers. When asked about all the different Need for Speed games, Nilsson acknowledged that it had grown too convoluted. "Was it confusing to have Need for Speed: The Run [six months after having] Shift 2? Absolutely. Not only does it saturate Need for Speed, but it also confuses you. 'What is the experience I get from Need for Speed?'"

So, to fix this problem, EA and Ghost Games waited a year and essentially restarted the series. "Taking the year off is obviously an answer to that, right?" he said. "We used it to figure out who we are and what we should be... This reboot of the franchise is about getting our foundation correctly laid out--what you see here is what the Need for Speed experience will be for the foreseeable future."

The Need for Speed reboot launches on November 3 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. You can read our impressions of the game here. Ghost Games and EA will also show footage at the Gamescom conference taking place this week. Check back on GameSpot during the conference for more news and videos of the game.

But only if it can be done by the original creators.

@silverwings21: Actually people want, buy, and enjoy new COD games as they want very different weapons, maps, and killstreaks.

But in a racing game? You kinda just need a car and a corner to take.

Which will be good as long as they don't go back to the yearly release crap. Every two years is perfectly fine.

Wait, wait, wait, wait....

A dev working for EA admitting that shitting our yearly sequels ruins a franchise? Maybe there's still hope for the gaming industry after all.

Need For Speed has been dead since the PS2 era.

If they actually listened to what fans want, they would make NFSUnderground 3.

That is the game everyone wants.

@stuff238: This new one is supposed to be like Underground meets Most wanted (2005) which to me is a great combination. I just hope that they do a great job, I want a nice NFS game, and it has been a while.

Too many always online games. But, I can deal with it. Just rather have the option so then I never have to worry or experience outages on my end or theirs. I like my games to just always work but that's getting much more problematic this gen! I will be getting NFS as I've always loved the series.

Hold the boat! Lot's of people are saying this game is going the MMO route! If that's the case I'll definitely be passing on it. This series made its legacy as a SP game and was sweet!

MMO though, forget about it!!!!!

I am sad about it being always online :/

I feel like the games from a point, were all attempts of trying to do what fans asked for and at the same time add something new in the mixture. Which to me, it looked desperate, struggling, to please, they were getting there but not exactly there. They tried to please everyone.

With this being a reboot, looks promising, sounds promising and they sound like they getting their heads together.

Being online makes it sound cheap in my mind.

Hey let''s play NFS. Ok.

The mind think associate internet game > internet game free, cheap games, short games, facebook games, miniclip games, cheap free mmorpg games, flash games, need for speed only online games.

People learned to associate NFS as a high quiality AAA racing game.

Being it only online it differs from that quality that idea. Even if they put more effort to it.

The Run was the last good NFS game.

NFS died with Black Box. R.I.P.

The series will never be the same again now that these new studios got their grubby hands on it.

Favorites: Hot Pursuit 2, Underground, Underground 2, Most Wanted (2005), The Run.

its difficult to make a high-quality, big budget game in such a short period. Yearly releases end up feeling like minor updates instead of new experiences in familiar concept. Gamers then question if $60 is worth it. Often times it's not, but sadly gamers want to play and will often pay the unfair, high costs for sub-par sequels.

Call of Duty has 2 developers working in 2-year cycles in order to pump out yearly games. This still causes fatigue since the games feel so similar between on game to the next.

Publishers and developers need to widen their catalog instead of always trying to push for annual releases on the most popular franchises.

Annual releases from any franchise is too much. I am too the point where I don't buy any annual games because they have less value and annoying DLC. I am a fan of the Need for Speed Series so i will withhold my judgement until I play.

I don't know why all the complaints is all about

yes we hate online only shit, but 90% of the games are becoming like that, NFS is becoming an MMO it's not a single player experience anymore... and for who is complaining about NFS is a burnout game:

you asked for customization and they delivered, you asked for open world and underground racing and they delivered

the new NFS has a crew in it, so it's like NFS carbon married to The Crew

but what it really sucks is when anyone is going to a country side with no internet connection and he wants to play his fav game but he can't cause it's always online, all games are becoming like that if not now in the near future and this is really sad

Games are becoming like that (always online) because they're profitting with it and we're accepting it.

Remember: WE ARE THE CUSTOMERS, we have to dictate the market, "demand VS supply" not the opposite! We demand, they deliver what we requested. Otherwise, no money for you, developers.

Always online = questionable. As always, Test Drive Unlimited, the first racing game to do this whole connected world thing, had an offline mode with AI. It is of no benefit to players and to all of the detriment if this is not an option.

Games like that are worth less to me, as in I will not pay the same amount for a game that'll unjustifiably cease to function when the servers start having issues. Especially if there's also microtransactions to ease the grind of the game's arduous progression system. Don't know if EA's confirmed or denied Need for Speed having microtransactions, but I'm not holding my breath here.

I recently got The Crew for $12 or some such. I reckoned that was a fair price for that game. Wasn't gonna buy it at all, so Ubisoft should be happy about that.
