Need For Speed's E3 2015 Reboot Does Not Disappoint

Urban street styles

The last few Need For Speeds have done a commendable job catering to different driving preferences, but this latest installment just might be the most accessible version yet. The franchise has been around long enough that it has different fanbases from different eras, whether it's the period when the cars tended to grip the pavement and the era when there was more of an emphasis on drifting. Customization and tuning is commonplace in all kinds of racing games, and while the next Need For Speed offers a wealth of options to personalize your handing, having a Grip vs Drift slider makes the experience very pick up-and-play.

Given that arcade racing is my favorite genre, I'm often confident that I can place well (if not first) in my multiplayer racing booth demos at E3 year after year. Need For Speed threw me for a loop, given that its design is not as straightforward as point to point races. In a form of thoughtful rebranding Need For Speed's multiplayer score attack is called 8-Player Rep Attack. It keys in on the kind of skill-based driving that has been very popular these many years. It's not surprising for Need For Speed developer Ghost Games, which is primarily made up of former talent from Criterion Games, a studio known for the risk-taking driving from the Burnout series. From slick drifting to near miss car passes, you'll earn points toward your rep when you're competing with seven others at Rep Attack.

My match started with a point-to-point race, and while I placed first, I didn't earn the most rep points, probably because I did not drift enough and stayed far from incoming traffic. That wasn't the end of the competitive session, though. With the match over, every driver was left with several minutes to accumulate rep points however they saw fit. Some opted to lure cops into a chase, others just free roamed. Within my seven minute time limit, I managed to do all these things and ended up with a very respectable third place ranking.

In all, I enjoyed how the controls and my preferred grip setting felt. More importantly, the hands-on experience managed to emulate the intensity and visual realism of the flashy E3 2015 trailer. The isolated feeling from touring the dark streets of Ventura Bay (a fictional version of Los Angeles) were punctuated by the light-bleeds from the street lights and headlights. Need For Speed's attention to detail is never more apparent than in the garages. Rather than present them in their most pristine state, the cars in your collection have a "just driven" look, as if you had each of your cars out in the wet weather sometime in the last couple hours.

Need For Speed comes out on November 3, 2015.

yap please let us chose to de activate that stupid drift camera its really bad you stop to see anything when they use that its really bad or just activate it with the slow mo that nfs had . But pleaaase let us deactivate it for the players like me that thinks its to game disengaging it just break the game play . please hear our prayers . and of course PLEASE NO ALWAYS ONLINE STUPID STUFF.

If i want to play always online i would play a MMO not a car game . it should be optional as any other story based game or racing game or rpg game or fps game or fighting game or sport game that its not a full mmo game .

@unzythun: I think it's pretty cool, gives it a nice arcade feel, maybe they need to tone it down a little, Underground 2 was like that, the camera tilts back and forth when turning but got used to it pretty quick.

OMG, the camera on drifting looks terrible.
The graphics are awesome, but if the camera will be like that all the time, I will no even get closer of this game
(First most wanted was the best - I didn't play underground - , Carbon was very good - short - , ProStreet was okay - good, Hot pursuit I like the feel on drifting, but this new one... I think NfS is over. Soon Rockstar will improve the driving stuffs on the next - hope so - GTA, so that will be the best Racing game)

For videogame's sake!!! I love videogames but I'm each time more and more disappointed with them. First I had to deal with TDU devs working on the crappy The Crew and now, apparently, Criterion games is banished thanks to EA, having them working with Ghost games on another online-only street racing game. I guess Forza Horizon 2 is the last real street racing game worth the while and it's far from being my favorite.

Given that petitions have already been formed and many comments are announcing no-buys over the online only requirement, the article title should really be corrected. This reboot is clearly disappointing many gamers.

Its as if people are oblivious to PC gaming. Majority of it is always online!

MMOs anyone? Its nothing new. No need to be worried/shocked.

@BLiTZ_156: The XBone was similarly supposed to be online-only. I'd say that worried/shocked plenty of potential buyers.

Two things I dislike:

1. The camera angle (action cam or w/e it's called) when you drift. I hope it can be changed to the regular view.

2. I don't like the idea that the campaign takes place "between dusk to dawn." I want daytime racing, not ONLY night time racing... geez!

I haven't touched NFS since Underground 2 and I don't follow it anymore but this gives off a major NFS U2 vibe from the HUD to the color scheme.

The NFS games I most enjoyed were Underground, played the hell out it the first one when I was in college. The rep thing sounds similar to the last SSX game, where you can win even if you don't come in first.

@shadyshack: Yes, we play online when WE CHOSE TO. The point is that there is no reason to shackle people to a server just to play the core game, should we chose. And no, I will not "just play" when it costs me $60+tax for a product that only works so long as they decide to allow it. My purchase, my ownership.

@nowe: don't worry they will probably release an update that will unlock that requirement so you and others (including me) can play offline if they see fit, or just allow offline play from the day it drops. If I recall correctly, EA did say they were taking into consideration the thoughts of Need For Speed fans very seriously to make the best possible game and not disappoint. So yeah just give em' a chance

@nowe: my rebuttal to this is simple, you don't own the game because you have the disc. you have merely just purchased a copy of the game with no rights to it at all. as gaming goes forward you will have less and less none internet exclusion. it's the sign of change that internet has had on gaming as a whole. yet we the players are to blame because of what we have craved since the dawn of games more content and never ending updates. so you have a right complain but makes no sense to complain at this point.

@shadyshack: It's not a sign of the "change internet has on gaming" but more a sign of how EA wants to totally control who has access to their games. This is their way to control reselling of their games. It's how EA plans to charge full price for used games. Say you sold this game after playing it, the next owner would have to pay EA on top of the used game cost just to play it.

@shadyshack: Nothing wrong with being upset at the fact that in the certain chance the network goes down for any length of time, you're sitting with a worthless game. A lot of people rightly believe that it simply isn't worth dropping 60 bucks on what could very easily become a coaster. If you're ok with that, then by all means enjoy the game. But people value longevity and have an attachment to things that stand the test of time. Online games simply haven't proven that they are capable of doing so.

In irony of ironies, the NFS site posted a screenshot of Underground 2, asking "Hey, who remembers playing this, guys?" Well we COULDN'T DO THAT if it was tied to servers which shut down ten years ago.

Squeeze a few more pennies, lose an entire bankrole. I really wish Gamespot would bring this to light.

@MigGui: Part of locking in those yearly sales involves building up, not disenfranchising, a fan base. Would EA post a pic of their last SimCity and ask "Hey guys, remember this? We're doing it again"? Technically, your point is right, they were just asking who remembers. But the irony persists.

@user514: at the end of the videos they did say "Captured in Engine" (both the trailer and the demo btw even tho the demo said "Pre-Alpha Footage") Basically what C.I.E means is that the footage is highly rendered by the game's engine to the point that it looks so realistic but the final product will look half as decent. Also I saw someone's comment on another website which tried to explain what Captured in Engine meant and had me kmsl on the floor when I saw it. Basically he said one of the developers just threw a disc into the engine of a car and revved it up until the disc melted, meaning that the game was on fire
