NCsoft Q3 sales slip 6%

Following stellar 2009, Aion creator sees revenues dip to $139 million while profit ticks up 1% to $42.6 million.

Throughout 2009, NCsoft routinely posted triple digit quarterly profit and revenue growth, due in large part to the success of its latest massively multiplayer online role-playing game Aion. And while the Korean publisher can't say the same for its current in-progress fiscal year, the publisher certainly isn't losing much ground, either.

Gooooooo profits!
Gooooooo profits!

Reporting on its July-September fiscal quarter this week, NCsoft said revenues came in at KRW155 billion ($139 million), down 6 percent from the same period a year ago. Likewise, profit was largely flat year-over-year, rising just 1 percent to KRW47.3 billion ($42.6 million).

The publisher attributed its sales slip to a decrease in performance out of its Lineage franchise. The publisher also said that it had increased its payroll, having ramped up headcount in its R&D department.

Aion continued to be NCsoft's primary money maker. The angels-and-demons-themed fantasy MMORPG, which saw first release in Korea in 2008 before eventually debuting in the West in September 2009, accounted for 44 percent of the companies sales during the period, or KRW62.9 billion ($56.7 million).

Lineage and Lineage II contributed 28 percent and 20 percent, respectively, while City of Heroes/Villains, Guild Wars, and the rest provided the remaining 8 percent. The two Lineage series combined to achieve sales of nearly KRW69 billion ($62.2 million).

I agree fLaMbOaStiN. I just quit Aion because of that very reason. I realized how much time it would take to get the PVP gear that would make me competitive in the Abyss and it was totally disheartening. Months of grinding didn't seem worth it. Beautiful game graphics-wise, but suffers from poor implementation of gear. Be wary if you are thinking of starting this game at this point in time.

@Sorkvir city of heros and guild wars are the only thing they have thats good. *************************************************************** Agreed. I would have continued playing CoH/V and Guild Wars, but WoW came out and I got married, and my MMO gaming life was pretty much over. Now with a baby on my lap, I literally don't have time to play MMO's for 3-5hrs a day like I used to. Would love to try GW2, but it'll probably never happen unless I hit the lotto.

Aion EU is dying at a massive rate, of the 3 english speaking servers Spatalos = Dead, Telemachus = Dead and lastly Parento = only a matter of time till disbalance kills it. Thank god NCSoft don't have anything to do with GW2. Fail company. Cancelled my sub last month ---> to those who say fenis/Mira is end game gear LOL!

Well, I'd like to see how COH does in the future. I'm loving Going Rogue (the new expansion), and hope that its a long-term benefit to the game's playerbase and profits. Hoping GW2 does well, but I'll readily admit I'm not interested in playing it - I have great academic love for GW1 but that's it. Personal taste, that's all - they did a lot of cool things in there, and from the sounds of GW2 (read a lot on Massively, blogs, etc) they're rethinking a lot of MMO-standard things. Very much worth checking out if you haven't done so already. Here's hoping that all games do well in 2011 - no game is "one size fits all," so I'll be happy if there's something out there for everyone.

i'm glad i only pre-ordered Aion and tried beta, hated it, and kept my $5 to put towards another game. that, and i canceled 3 city of heroes subscriptions in the household. this company needs to get its gaming groove back on and stop screwing with what used to be good. so yes, i feel responsible for their loss of revenue, and i'm proud of it! *tongue in cheek, guys, tongue in cheek*

All the hate for the P2P genre, Aion is a nice game and it deserve a lot of credit in many aspects. It's nothing revolutionary but it's very well done, nice move on NC part. People just want GW2 more because it's "free to play" even though I fail to see how having to buy a new expension every 3-4 months (if they go old model) is "free". And for people saying you don't have to buy to play ... true but a MMO without new content could just be labeled with R.I.P tag for most people

The majority of players are overseas, where the majority of MMO players are located. The US percentage of players only counts for maybe 1/4 of all MMO totals.

It really amazes me how NCsoft can handle so good vs competition and make so huge profits each years with games as Lineage and AION... Games are just mediocre but still its working for them. Damn! Dunno how theyll do when CATACLYSM - Diablo 3 and Star wars will release though. Im very curious what their profits will be next year.

I loved Aion until about lvl 15. At that point, it becomes a chore. So much of a grind that I stopped playing and never looked back. Greatly looking forward to GW2.

I thought Aion was ok, although the random number god, as mentioned by another poster earlier, is something that needs to die--in all games, but especially that one. I hope GW2 comes out soon, although unlike a lot of people nothing about it really screams "awesome" to me like the first one did. It seems they're making too many concessions to MMO genre standbys instead of focusng on making a great unique game like the first GW was.

If NCsoft would go ahead and release Guild Wars 2 already, then they wouldn't have problems like this.

Meh who cares? The entire game of aion can crash and burn, and ncsoft will be just fine, because when GW2 comes out....hoo boy. I can just see 60 million sales on that.

AION is still my favorite MMORPG to date.. It just sucks that end game gear (Fenrils/Miragents) completley ruins the game and end game.. Wasteing months of my life to RNG for end game gear = no thanks.. With that said, NC Soft is my LEAST favorite MMORPG company.. They never listened to any of the Americans playing AION leaving suggestions about AION.. There were 4 pages at one point that complained of Miragents/Fenrils Blood Stains and the GM never responded.. Nor did they do anything about it. I was in the #1 Elyos legion on Fregion.. Half the people ended up leaving because of miragents pants.. Not to mention all my friends on f list.. NC Softs loss i guess. Hopefully they give more westernize beta testing for B&S.. Cuz that game does look great.
