NBA 2K18's Cover Star Kyrie Irving Traded, 2K Responds

2K takes it in stride, saying on Twitter, "Whoops."

[UPDATE] 2K has now released a full statement on the matter and also confirmed that there will be a cover of NBA 2K18 featuring Kyrie Irving in a Celtics jersey. You can read the full statement here.

The original story is below.

The writing had been on the wall, and now it's official. According to an ESPN report, the NBA's Cleveland Cavaliers and the Boston Celtics have agreed to a blockbuster trade that will send NBA 2K18 cover star Kyrie Irving to the Celtics. An earlier report stated that Irving asked to be traded, supposedly dissatisfied with playing alongside the NBA's biggest star, LeBron James.

This puts NBA 2K18 in an interesting and awkward position. Assuming no last-minute change is made, we'll see Irving in a jersey for his former team. The marketing team at 2K Sports may not be terribly happy with this development.

We've followed up with 2K in an attempt to get more details and will update this post with anything we might hear back. On Twitter, 2K appears to be taking it in stride, jokingly writing, "Whoops" on a tweet announcing Irving--as a member of the Cavs--as the cover star for NBA 2K18.

Whatever happens, Irving is one of the biggest names in professional basketball and is among the league's standouts. And no matter who Irving plays for, NBA 2K18's dominance in the NBA video game market is not likely to be materially affected by this.

Also worth noting that is DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors is on the cover of NBA 2K18 in Canada, so the Irving trade doesn't affect everyone everywhere. Also, you can pick up one the special editions that feature Shaquille O'Neal on the cover.

As part of the Cavs-Celtics trade deal, the Cavs receive Isaiah Thomas, as well as Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn's 2018 first-round pick.

Below is a mock-up of what Irving might look like in a Celtics jersey, made by ESPN. Another element to this story is that the Celtics open the upcoming season on the road against the Cavs. It's going to be a good one.

NBA 2K18 officially launches on September 19 for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC, PS3, and Xbox 360.

Thomas player rating: 89. Kyrie player rating: 90. I agree on both accounts

This year I might go with EA's game. Played the demo and thought it stood up very well. 2K's getting a run for their money this year.

@Conjuration: I played a on of the Live demo, and I just don't see what you're seeing. Maybe it's just the wanting of something fresh and new, but Live has a ton of issues to me. Slow player response, too easy perimeter defensive lock, poor post game, poor inside game, poor animations, and poor outside shooting. I don't see i competing or even close to the overall package in 2Ks engine. Don't get me wrong, 2K has fundamental issues, but the engine is far deeper and superior.

@lordstrategery: hard to argue against many of your points. But it's like you say; I'm just wanting something new and fresh. I got no beef with 2K at all, I just liked the way Live 18 felt on the court. And it has yet to be seen, but I got a feeling franchise mode will be superior. And that's basically what will sway me one way or the other.

@Conjuration: I hope you enjoy your purchase. Basketball is a tricky sport to replicate. Hopefully the Live team is dedicated and keeps with it this year.

Is that an General Electric logo on the Celtics jersey? I didn't realize the NBA is now putting advertisements on jerseys. Disgusting.

@csward: Yep, that's correct. NBA finally joined the club to promote ads on players' jerseys for the highest bidder. They're just following suit of sports like NASCAR and Boxing which also do this practice.

@csward: I hate it too. I think it's a disgrace to every teams culture and heritage. Just call yourselves the Minnesota Pepsi's already or whatever.

Reminds me of the Brett Favre Madden cover

I'm sure there is still plenty of time for them to go and print off a bunch of new cover inserts. If the game is already printing and packaged, and it's too much a of a pain to replace the art in each copy, they could still ship off the new cover to the retailers and say they're a bonus for everyone that buys the first print of the game. That or do a free redemption thing online for people that buy the game.

So, does NBA2K have its own "curse" now. 2 years, 2 players switching teams. Be safe and don't put LBJ on 19s cover, just sayin'.

@e3man01: It's been going on since LeBron left Miami.

@chiefwiggum16: Perhaps now, but I really fear (I'm a Boston guy) that the Celts will regret this in the long run. Three, four years from now? Hmm. And, really, what does this mean? We'll have the right to lose to Golden State in the Finals?

@olddadgamer: You are out of your mind, the Celtics are set up to have finals appearances for the next 4-6 years and maybe even more.

@chiefwiggum16: I dunno, man. I always get nervous when you trade a player who has not yet reached their prime for one that has. Ones that have tend to hit the downslope sooner.

@eddienoteddy: Yes sir, I am a life long New England sports nut and the past 10-15 year have just been magnificent for at least one of the sports. Since 2001 we've had 10 titles and 14 championship appearances between the sports. Title town lives up to it's name.

@eddienoteddy: I assume your doubt is in the Bruins. Have faith! We have an elite goal tender, Bergie'll be fine because he isn't killing himself in the world cup (and is finally fixing the hernia he got playing in it), Krejci played SO much better under Cassidy (under whom they were 18-8), McAvoy looks like the next thing on D, they didn't lose anyone to Vegas worth noting, and they would have beaten the Sens in the playoffs had Karlson not been otherworldly.

Phew.

And that totally isn't the panicked ranting of a nervous fan who's trying to convince himself. No siree.

@olddadgamer: I hate Rask, he's over rated only reason he's been good is because our defense was so good. Now it's not and hasnt been for about 2 years and he's stunk. I see them making the the playoffs this year and with the nhl who knows. You make the dance and anyone can win it.

Avatar image for olddadgamer
OldDadGamer

@chiefwiggum16: You jest. He's been at the top of the league in goals against despite having a D corp in front of him that consists of, what, Adam McQuaid until he gets injured for 52 games and a Zdeno who looks so old it hurts to watch him play. That and....who? The B's gave up more shots per game last year than anyone and still made the playoffs. And their record with a backup was horrendous. Do not say Krug. Krug gets props cuz of his offense, not his defense. Probably the best defensive player they have is Bergeron...a center.
