Naughty Dog VP Talks PS5 Following Release Of Last Of Us Part 2

Neil Druckmann speaks about what the PlayStation 5 will offer to developers.

Naughty Dog recently released The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 4, and it could be the developer's final game for the console. The team will presumably shift to the PlayStation 5 for its next game, whether that be The Last of Us Part II, a new IP, or something else entirely. Naughty Dog VP Neil Druckmann has now spoken about the PS5 and what it will allow the developer to achieve. That involves fewer loading screens for a more immersive experience. But just what the experience happens to be is still unknown to us.

In an appearance on former Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime's new podcast, Druckmann said the PS5's new SSD will help cut down on load times, which will in turn open new doors for Naughty Dog's developers.

Now Playing: The Last Of Us Part II Video Review

Druckmann pointed out that Naughty Dog already works hard to minimize loading zones in its games, but this is only possible due to technical wizardry happening behind the scenes that the player never sees. With the PS5, developers won't need to be as crafty, Druckmann teased.

"At the end of a [console] generation, you always feel the constraints. You always feel like you're pushing against a bunch of walls and finding the little cracks where you can take things a little further whether it's memory or CPU or hard drive speed. When you start a new generation, it's a double-edged sword," Druckmann said. "On the one hand, you have to build new tech for the new hardware, and that can be an uphill battle. But on the other hand, all of a sudden you feel this freedom of, 'Oh my god, we can breathe again!' 'We can break away from these constraints.' And one of the things that we're excited by is the solid-state hard drive and what it means for almost seamless loading."

"We do so much work, on our end, once you start the adventure, you never see a load screen. And there's so much work that happens behind the scenes of how we design the levels, how we chop them up, and it's all invisible to the player; you never see any of that work," he added. "But now, knowing that we're going to be able to load things more quickly, it just means the designers don't have to be as constrained by how they lay things out. How we think about things. When we load new characters. So I'm excited to see the doors that opens for us."

Naughty Dog won't be jumping into a PS5 game right away, it seems, as Druckmann confirmed that he and the team are taking a break and catching their breath after releasing The Last of Us Part II.

During this same podcast, Druckmann spoke about the internet hate surrounding The Last of Us Part II, saying that hatred and vitriol is unavoidable when you make something that is massively popular.

Naughty Dog's next game is expected to be a standalone Last of Us Part II online experience of some kind. Given the timing, it seems possible that this project--whatever it might be--may debut on PS5. Almost nothing is known about this Last of Us game, however. Naughty Dog is unexpected to return to Uncharted, as the studio said Uncharted 4 and Lost Legacy were the final games in the series they planned to work on. However, a different studio could come in to make Uncharted 5.

Druckmann also recently confirmed that Naughty Dog has no plans to release story DLC for The Last of Us Part II.

This is in contrast to the first game, which was followed up with the acclaimed Left Behind prequel expansion. It was included with the remastered PS4 version, as well.

The Last of Us Part II sold more than 4 million copies over its first three days to set new records at PlayStation, outpacing other exclusives like Spider-Man, God of War, and Uncharted 4.

For more on The Last of Us Part II, check out editor Phil Hornshaw's recent opinion piece, "The Last Of Us 2's Obsession With A Gamer Gotcha Undermines Its Characters."

How about making more an emphasis on gameplay instead of worrying about loading in game, and narratives. Gameplay is paramount everything else should be secondary in a video game and ND game’s, at least the ones I’ve played are all average at best. Great stories apart from what they did in TLOU 2 but the actual gameplay of these games is nothing special at all. Maybe they can concentrate more on gameplay with the advent of the ps5.

Hey Neil. Guess what happens when you take something popular, like say a video game that's universally praised and beloved, and then trash the hell out of it, making it equal parts boring and disturbing, and then can't understand why all the hate for that game??

I know, it just boggles the mind, doesn't it? Who would have ever thought screwing the fans like that would have such repercussions? How are those sales, by the way? And when the hell will the US allow returns again? Not fair to your consumer base, bro. I use the term "bro" extremely loosely. I haven't a clue whether you'd prefer to be addressed as "sis" instead. If I've insulted you, well, good.

@naija: "Guess what happens when you take something popular, like say a video game that's universally praised and beloved, and then trash the hell out of it, making it equal parts boring and disturbing?"

It becomes the fastest selling game on the system?

I love that you create a brand new account just to troll threads about this game. And I can tell by your comments throughout this thread that you absolutely have not even played this game, (look to the next page of comments where I specifically call you out on all the things that you incorrectly claim to know about the game). It sounds like you probably got a 10 minute synopsis off of YouTube from someone who didn't even play the game themselves.

Now that you're so obvious, you should just move on.

@naija: Oh shut the f*ck up with your whining, crying and insulting for f*cks sake... How can a grown man act like an entitled 12 year old brat just because he didn't like a goddamn video game is beyond me. You wrote tens of comments under this article about how evil the developers are for telling the story they wanted to tell and how stupid the millions of people are that liked it. F*ck you, the only piece of sh*t here, is you. Thinking the world owes you something, Jesus... Just take a minute and reflect on the laughable crap you're doing. It's beyond pathetic.

So what if you didn't like it? Put your copy up on the internet and sell/exchange it to/with someone, just like other people do when they don't like a game or they are finished playing it, shut up and move on. As for digital sales, as far as I know, Sony never offered refunds for games on the PS Store except if they are broken (noone does, except Steam, and only if you played it less than 2 hours, which is basically nothing for most games). In that case, don't buy the developers next game (which you most likely would have, if you'd have enjoyed this one) and then again, shut up and move on.

And no, you didn't insult anyone with your childish crap. The thought of you actually believing, that a highly successful person who wrote and directed some of the most acclaimed video games of all time, would be insulted by someone who spends his time spewing hateful crap about one video game he made under an article that addresses generational hardware transitions, is just laughable. You're only making yourself look worse and worse. Grow up, pop your bubble and learn that the world doesn't revolve around you.

In response to the recent article about the devs responding to the hate, since GS didn't have the courage to leave the comments on...

I've been enjoying TLOU2 and its sad to see the level of criticism it got based on the direction of the story. Like any body of work that garners a fan base, its understandable that certain "fan boys" who enjoyed the game(s), can be let down if something happens within the storyline that they disagree with. I hope the developers involved aren't discouraged by this vitriol. To the people that have actually been threatening or harassing an actor playing a freakin character, its odd that these are the same individuals that would like to convince you that sort of hatred no longer exists during this time.

@cejay0813: I'm not sure that it is only "fan boys" that would dislike the story.

There are many things wrong with the story beyond that "one thing".

I loved the game, but they made some very bold choices with the story that definitely don't make sense, or pay off in the end. It doesn't take a fanboy to see that.

Which one that doesn't fit in the narrative?

"bold choices with the story that definitely don't make sense, or pay off in the end."

Again... Which ones... I'm asking because in the end all made perfect sense to me...

@blindbsnake: I think that making Ellie a psychopathic murder bot was just really hard for me to swallow. I understand that it's a dangerous world that has made her harder over time, (and of course losing a loved one definitely contributed to her going completely off the rails), but DAMN!

The amount of slit throats, heart stabs, knives to the head, etc. just strains credulity. She beats a half dead chick with a pipe to get info. She threatens to cut a kid's throat if Abbey refuses to fight her. Shit was just totally out of hand. I don't mind violence at all, but it feels intentionally extreme.

The other thing that really made no sense whatsoever is Abbey just all the sudden doing a complete 180 degree turn, and deciding to start murdering her own people. Why? Because of 1 kid? It was just ridiculous. Which leads to my final issue.

It seems that ND was really trying to make Abbey seem almost sympathetic, (or they maybe assumed that people would learn to like her). I can't say that I don't understand why she did what she did, but nothing she did after that, (including murdering her own people to save Lev), made me feel any better about her. If anything, the way she just turned on a dime and started murdering her own people made me think she was more psycho than Ellie.

All that being said, I still adore the game. None of the things I mentioned ruined it for me, and it's all just my opinion of course. ;)

@aross2004: "think that making Ellie a psychopathic murder bot was just really hard for me to swallow."

After David... I think is not out of character.

"I don't mind violence at all, but it feels intentionally extreme."

Agree... But I think that's the point. There were moments in the story I was like... ok, no more, just move on. And that feeling is extremely important in the end...

"Abbey just all the sudden doing a 180 degree turn and start murdering her own people. Why? Because of 1 kid?"

The thing is... She did nothing extreme, she just wanted them to not kill them, she has a different perspective than in the beginning of the game. They don´t give her a chance, and they should have been more careful when dealing with a killing machine...

And is not just a kid, it's a kid who saved her from a certain death... That was the redemption moment from Abby at my eyes. And I never see saving a child as ridiculous. That´s the reason I always was on Joel side in the end of the first game.

"It seems that ND was really trying to make Abbey seem almost sympathetic..."

They could have made a villain who is also a very bad person. Abby is a Villain that is not a bad person in all the greatness of the word, it is also a person who suffered a lot. So I understand her side, and yes Naughty Dog want us to see the other side of the coin.

In the end I didn't love Abby, but I pity her, so I just wanted for her to move on, same thing for Ellie.

When Ellie let Abby go she did three things (at my eyes), she forgive Abby, she forgive herself and she gave me (the player) hope for a new beginning for both of them.

@blindbsnake: Good points. And as much as I didn't like Abbey, I don't necessarily think she was the villian.

If there is a villian, then Ellie is easily just as bad as Abbey when you think about it. Abbey did what she did because of what Joel did. Ellie did what she did because of what Abbey did. They are both basically doing really bad things for almost the exact same reasons. 2 wrongs definitely do not make a right.

Thanks for your thoughts, it's good to get different perspectives ;)

@aross2004: "They are both basically doing really bad things for almost the exact same reasons."

Yes... I agree. That is in fact one of the beautiful things in this game that makes it completely different than any other game. While you have all the weapons and abilities to do arm in awesome ways, the game never congratulate you for that.

In fact tries over and over to make you question your actions. If it works for you as a gamer, the experience is superb, but I understand that may not work for everyone.

"Thanks for your thoughts, it's good to get different perspectives ;)"

No, thank you. It´s hard to make good conversations with different point of views. Especially these days with so many "not clever" people hating this game without even playing it. I apologize in advance if sometime I make a reply for you in a not respectful way, I engage myself in so many fights defending this game that sometimes I lower the level of the debate to put myself at the same level as them.

Thanks for the input...

@aross2004: my point being that it's not the fan boys story to make. If you didn't like the direction the story took doesn't necessarily mean it's bad. You just didn't like it, but I guess where I'd give it a 9 you'd give it an 8 for that reason so it all works out. Now the fan base review bombing the game because of this helps no one

@cejay0813: You summed it up perfectly. I do love the game, I just felt like the motivations and actions of certain characters really didn't feel genuine or consistent. And I definitely feel like ND thought players would learn to like a certain character, and it totally missed the mark for me, (although maybe it worked for others).

But every other thing in this game is so excellent that I find it impossible to hate on it.

@cejay0813: The thing is it's way more than just an isolated number of people who are upset about the game and the story. Yes, we didn't like it. And we have the right to express that displeasure. It's our money and our time spent on such a piece of tripe. Now, you liked it, apparently very much. So be it. We didn't it. The game was getting review bombed because of the one-sided lovefest that "journalists" had given it. That was Sony and ND's fault. They thought if they stacked the reviews in their favor, everyone would agree and believe it was a great game. It's not and all the money paid to shills in the world won't make it so.

@naija: "The game was getting review bombed because..."

Oh... This has a simple answer... Because some people is stupid... More than a thousand negative reviews 3 hours after the game release... Nothing more to add...

"believe it was a great game"

I don´t believe I know is a fantastic game. But I agree that it was Naughty Dog mistake... They thought that players would be able to see more than just whats on front of them, and clearly, many of them can´t...

Absolutely loved TLOU2, even more so then the 1st game which i thought wouldn't be possible. The story, gameplay, acting, level design and audio were astonishing. Its one of the only games that i can think of that i felt like playing again straight away after completing it. I just couldn't get enough even though it was such a long game! First play through i think took me about 37hours.

However, im really disappointed to hear that you are not going to do single player story DLC for part 2, the first parts DLC was soo good and i would have loved to see some sort of side story dlc in TLOU2 even if it was a brand new character, Yara, SCARS, or a Joel Side story before the events of this game. I think its a missed opportunity if you are not thinking about it and instead are thinking of creating some multiplayer world in TLOU2 as i have absolutely zero interest in that no matter how good it is.

Heres hoping you guys start cracking on with TLOU3 for PS5, cant wait to see what you guys come up with in that game!! Please don't take such a long gap this time, 3 years would be acceptable :)

Except the MP in TLoU 1 was excellent, and had a robust and dedicated player community for many years.

I get it might not be for you, but there is no missed opportunity for ND to focus on the MP side. I felt releasing the 2nd game without the MP would be a real missed opportunity, so I'm glad they're focusing on it now.

There are many people who are just as excited for the MP, (if not more), than the SP campaign.

@cejay0813: Given the 80% drop in sales from week 1 to week 2 and the trend likely to continue, I'd say nope, there won't be any DLC for the game and most likely won't be a third game either. And good riddance.

@naija: also if we're basing success off numbers it also beat out SpiderMan which we all would agree was a success for PS4, selling 4 mill units in the first 3 days of release.

You also gloss over the fact that many successful games experience similar week 2 sales drop. I'm cool with it not being any DLC but don't you think it's a bit early to say that there won't be another game in the series? Sony and ND dropping it right here huh? Cool

Even though The Last of Us 2 was the #1 game when it debuted, the game's sales have dropped by a huge margin. The game manages to consecutively top two weeks in the UK, but is not expected to hold that position for long."

I mean if you're going to site an article go all the way. I'll wait for final sales numbers though.

I've not played TLoU2 - I work in the education dept of a hospital- and it has been busy.

But the amount of hate, even before the game was released was insane, I had thought the game had come out already when I was checking the news. It was May, and tons of homophobic, demasculinization, overly violent, anti pandemic?? - and this was not Facebook idiots this was Forbes, Polygon, and gamespot.

I just want to play a game, it doesn't matter if the main characters love whatever sex, or Katamari or chocobo it just has to be fun. I am not worried if a female character is portrayed as stronger then men, eventually they all are in everyway. It doesn't matter if a game is wanting to make a political statement like fascists Minecraft does, just as long as the game is fun. I just want to experience a world drastically different from the one I am in now - with out the use of illegal drugs. And the Last of Us was so good when it came out 5yrs ago, that come 7/3, I plan to play for as many hours as possible.

Shame that Naughty Dogs biggest IP comes out just before a new next gen console launch, I always enjoyed having a fresh game from them at the early launch of a next gen console. Best of luck to Naughty Dog and hope another Uncharted is not far away.

@jenovaschilld: That hate was due to the leaked videos and other information about the game. As it turned out, all of it was true. And by the way, TLoU actually came out 7 years ago, not 5. Naughty Dog will have to do a lot to recover from this debacle. Good to know though that they've still got some partially brain-dead fans out there still rabid for their products.

I have put about ten hours into it already, TLoU 2, so far really good, a little to much setups and not letting us into the action/exploration sooner. I game slower then others but again.. pretty good so far.

A Thief's End and TLoU2 are technical marvels, (especially the latter).

Can't wait to see what kind of black magic ND will be able to squeeze out of more powerful hardware.

Here's the deal. These characters are Naughty Dog's characters, not the haters' characters. ND is in the driver's seat and they will be telling their story. If haters are sad about a character's fate, it's possible the character did some horrible things that had consequences. And if they're angry that a character turns out to be LGBT, I've got news. There are LGBT people in the world all around us and they have stories as well.

It seems to me that no matter what was done, people would be complaining about something. I loved TLOU. While I haven't finished TLOU2 yet, I will not be approaching it with any negativity. My initial impressions are very good.

@barnold81: the game is essentially the same with some good updates just based on actual game play. The biggest flaw I find in the direction is the exploration drag between story beats. It can get kind of boring and drawn out when you're solo. While some parts hit you with unique puzzles and encounters a lot was just dead exploration searching through cabinets and shelves.

well uncharted is great, last of us is great, maybe it's time for a new IP? naughty dog did a lot for their name in the past 10 years, they would definitely be ahead compared to lesser known devs creating a new IP. people know their games are of high-quality.
