Naughty Dog Open to a New Crash Bandicoot, But the Time May Not Be Right

The developer that created the Crash series says, "It's never off the table."

Between HD remasters, digital re-releases, and the like, ways to satisfy your nostalgia are not hard to come across these days. Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House recently offered hope to fans who would like to see the company revive some of its older franchises, including Crash Bandicoot--a series created by Naughty Dog, the developer now best known for The Last of Us and Uncharted. Given the studio's current focus on those types of games, you might expect the prospect of a new Crash from Naughty Dog to be completely dead. That's actually not the case, although there is a reason its focus has been elsewhere lately.

"It's never off the table," Naughty Dog community strategist Arne Meyer told IGN when asked about bringing back Crash. "It's not too much time passing, but it's the same issues we explored with the Jak game: Is it something that makes sense to us now? I mean, we still have people that worked on the Crash games in the studio. We never forget our past and it'd be great for nostalgic reasons. It'd be the same reason as why there isn't a Jak 4: I don't know if it's playing to our strengths right now."

Last year, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann revealed that the studio set out to reboot another of its old series, Jak and Daxter, in 2009. As it began coming up with ideas, it found it was "kind of getting away from what Jak and Daxter was. We were questioning, 'Are we doing this for marketing reasons? Naming something Jak and Daxter, when it's not really Jak and Daxter? Or are we really passionate about it?'"

That project never panned out because of Naughty Dog's desire to make a different type of game, and that seems to remain the case, according to Meyer. "Right now, what's exciting everyone at the studio is continuing to work on narrative-driven games with strong characters," he explained. "I think, at least for the time being, we haven't exhausted the possibilities there, but that could change with something as simple as hardware. That's what drove it before. I think we're on to something really good though creating character-driven stories so that's where our focus is going to be."

A game in the core Crash series was last seen in 2008, when the poorly received Crash: Mind Over Mutant was released. You have to go back a decade to 1998's Crash Bandicoot: Warped to find the last core Crash game made by Naughty Dog, which also released a surprisingly good kart racing game--Crash Team Racing--in 1999.

The Crash series--which is now owned by Activision, rather than Sony--has been quiet for years now; the latest title to bear the jorts-wearing Bandicoot's name was mobile game Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 2 in 2010. Despite this, Activision said last year that it "continue[s] to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series back to life."

Naughty Dog is set to release the PlayStation 4 version of last year's acclaimed The Last of Us next week. It's also currently at work on Uncharted 4: A Thief's End for PS4 and some other "brand-new experience."

Would you like to see a Crash revival, or would it best to leave those fond memories--and jorts--in the past? Let us know in the comments.

I would love to see a revival of Crash or Jak on the PS4. But that ain't happening. Sony fans of today, and modern gamers in general, are too into realistic action games and their online counterparts for Naughty Dog to make anything else except TLOU, Uncharted or something similar. A new Jak and Crash wouldn't sell close to what an Uncharted 4 will or a TLOU 2.

It's interesting to see the divide in Playstation's history. From a games perspective, its easy to see a major diverging point from the PS1/PS2 era and the PS3/PS4 era.

Crash and Jak don't fit the mold of today's Sony, which is sad to say. Now I'm going to go lay by the bay. And eat some hay.

<< LINK REMOVED >> I kinda disagree. Yes, the formula wouldn't work as a stand alone release because the systems of today are too powerful, but why not make a downloadable arcade game?

But then you can also argue that Nintendo continually updates the Mario franchise as a triple A release so it's possible.

I think the real issue here is innovation. And unless they can invent something new, forcing yourself to make a new Bandicoot for the sake of updating the franchise might be a bad idea.

I come from a standpoint that much of the negativity (or indifference) that surrounds Nintendo is the fact that the people who once played and loved Nintendo "grew up" and now associate Nintendo as a "young generation" or "kiddie" console. The PS1/PS2 era overlapped this time period. Sony was originally trying to make a dent in the market by competing with Nintendo directly during this time, hence funding video games (jak and crash) that looked and played similarly to Nintendo's.

Then Sony changed their model as gamers were "growing up." The PS3 and now PS4 generation games look far more realistic, have far more "mature" themes and are built around online multiplayer. The millions upon millions who are running to the stores to buy the PS4 have subscribed to this new model. For the time being, Jak and Crash don't fit.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Are you sure Sony is embracing online multiplayer? Because two of their top games in 2014 have no online multiplayer. Infamous and The Order have no online component.

Crash and Jak don't hit any of the tiers.

Why would they have to? Mario games haven't been innovative at all, and every one sells right on cue.

@daikkenaurora12 @Rotondi @Dissentioncc Probably. Doesn't make the fantastic story of your friend finishing 3D land in 30 minutes any less valid. Because it's already so far from the truth it's ridiculous.

<< LINK REMOVED >> "Mario games haven't been innovative at all"

Here's a good example of what many modern gamers think of Nintendo games. How someone could possibly think that Mario games have not been innovative over the years makes absolutely no sense at all.

Also, I like how you assume I'm a "modern" gamer because of what I said. If anything, the opposite would hold true. Young or "modern" gamers haven't been around long enough to see year after year, decade after decade of the same rehashed trash.

Clearly it's more the characters and story that are rehashed. They do change gameplay with little tweaks and differences here and there. And I realize that at this point it's pretty difficult to not borrow concepts from older games. So the gameplay part is not the emphasis here.

How someone could think that rehashing the same basic storyline and gameplay for thirty years is innovative makes absolutely no sense to me.

Mario game from the NES era to the Wii U era and then come back and try to make a rational argument for how these games rehash gameplay. Try to explain to me how Galaxy is like Sunshine. How sunshine is like 64. How 64 is like SMW. How SMW is like SMB3.

How are they similar? Is that a serious question? They are all 3D platformers with the same basic premise. Idgaf if one includes a water backpack used to clean lol. You (Mario) are on x quest to save Princess Peach from Bowser....again and again and again and again and again and again. How you do it differs only slightly.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The story is just about the exact same. Sure, you got me there. But the gameplay isn't. Including a water backpack used to clean (as silly as it is) is a extremely different gameplay mechanic than the previous 3d mario.

No, it's not extremely different. It's different, but not enough to warrant an extreme. That's my entire point as far as gameplay goes. Again, the rehash is mainly about story and characters.

You're focusing too much on what I said about gameplay. To be honest, I don't really care that the gameplay has been similar. It's a specific type of game so that's fine. My beef is that it's always been Mario save Peach from Bowser, and that because of the fact that the gameplay has been largely the same it's not enough to warrant playing each new one for me.

Fair enough. I just think that if you are going to have a series with the same character and similar gameplay, change up the story, premise, antagonist etc.

They are still platformers at the end of the day. 2D or 3D, you still do basically the same thing in the games.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Obviously they are still platformers. We are talking the main Mario games here. They have to be founded on something. And Nintendo has taken MArio out of the platforming space time and time again, but we are not talking about that. I mean, I really don't know what your trying to prove here. If your trying to say Mario is always a platformer, well then loook at Mario Golf. If you're trying to say, in spite of always being a platformer, there are still no gameplay changes between the main mario games, then that's wrong too., You've already pointed out the water jetpack.

Damn Destiny, If it weren't for Bungie I wouldn't ever give Activi$ion a penny since they are so sad they wouldn't even let us fans use Crash on PS Allstars.......

What Exactly are you doing with it? You already ruined Spyro just give this back to Naughty Dog you have NEVER Gave Crash fans anything worth playing and the Last Crash games actually made me physically sick, you gave him tribal tatoos..........FU.

Wed be lucky to just have th average game look that good since so many are lagging behind. That said ryse is also proof that gameplay is king. It's cryteks specialty glorified tech demos that barley count as games. At least teh story was decent this time around unlike crysis.
