Mythic lands Warhammer online license

Climax Entertainment's online Warhammer once presumed dead, revived; Mythic comes to the aid of long-standing franchise.

It's been a busy year for the Warhammer fantasy massively multiplayer online license.

Last June, Climax Entertainment's Warhammer Online project was suddenly canned after two years in development. Climax unofficially resurrected the game in October, saying it never stopped development on the project and would be shopping it around to publishers.

Now that project is dead again (or at least stripped entirely of its license), as Mythic Entertainment announced Wednesday that it has secured exclusive worldwide rights from Warhammer creator Games Workshop to create MMO games for the PC and consoles based on the fantasy world.

The first of what Mythic hopes will be many games based on the Warhammer fantasy license is set to be released for the PC in 2007.
