Now Playing: Xbox One Sale Announced; No Man’s Sky Dev Teases Update! - GS News Roundup

If you haven't been tuned into No Man's Sky news lately, there's an alternate-reality game going on right now that seems to be leading to a new update in August. It's been going for a few weeks now, but today a new, interesting phase began. A mysterious website went live that allows you to type in commands, and it gives glimpses of some of No Man's Sky's lore.

If you go to the Waking Titan site, you'll be greeted with a command line. From here, you can play around with different commands and see what comes up. Typing in "Whatis Atlas," for instance, brings up a short poem about the game's shadowy Atlas organization. You can also type in "ship" to see a painting of a spacecraft that has appeared elsewhere in the ARG.

Things get really interesting if you type "List Commands." This'll show you a short selection of different commands and files that exist; you can enter "Start Atlas.init" and "Start CSD.init," for instance, and see that the website is waiting for some sort of input before progressing. "Citizen science protocols loaded ready for live test input seed to continue," it reads.

If you're interested in reading more about the ARG and the efforts to solve it, check out the No Man's Sky subreddit thread on it here. There's no word yet on what the August update might include; developer Hello Games has been tight-lipped about the game since its previous update in March. The Waking Titan website actually is a bit self-referential: if you type "Hello Games," you'll get "Process Hibernating" in return.

Assuming that the teased update is a major content patch, it'll be the third such update since No Man's Sky's release last year. The first, called the Foundation Update, added base-building and frigates, while the second added land vehicles.

unless it adds multiplayer and all the content shown in trailers, I don't care.

No, it's not perfect, but I personally loved (and still play) No Mans Sky. The last major update was awesome, and hopefully this next one is as well. I built a base, bought a freighter ship, and got some cool planetary vehicles. What's not to love? They could've just walked away after all the hate at launch, but Hello games is trying to make amends and make their game as good as it can be. I've got my platinum, and I'm still excited to play more.

Little correction on the article. You need to type "Whois Atlas", not Whatis. That will give an error. Other than that, good article. It's good to see that some of the social media still cares about NMS. This, however will sound very confusing to anyone not following the ARG :P

Very good gamespot, when the NMS community is really free of haters (most of them did not even play the game), you leave me with this totally incomplete post, to rekindle the horde of haters who have raised a silence from the HG for 9 months.

You know when half ass games gives you more than this full price lie

Avatar image for dudebropartyyo

@wexorian: Thats was on launch bro, what are you on about?

Avatar image for saturatedbutter

@dudebropartyyo: multiplayer yet? giant sand worms yet?

Avatar image for dudebropartyyo

@saturatedbutter: I didnt really know it was supposed to be a proper multy player. But it would be good, like once i was stuck without much life support left on survival mode with broken ship, would have been nice to signal to other players that i need something, could have charged me whatever they wanted cause i was desperate lol. Multy player would be great, i think they just need to sort out server coding and make sure every player obviously get same time zone in each system or overall. We know what happened when those 2 players met ages ago, same spot different time of day.

Giant worms, guess that would be interesting, i think variety of creatures in general. I was hoping to run into some big ass lake beast thats very hungry haha. As for his comment it pretty much refers to launch game.

Look they didnt really deliver with this game but at least they are not abandoning it so the future look promising.

I been playing No Man's Sky since launch and despite the hate, I still find myself some enjoyments over a year now and looking forward to this new update.

Why isn't this game dead yet?.......then a part of me thinks perhaps there is some hope and when I do eventually actually buy this title it may well be worth while.

Edit* I will purchase this soon.

Edit* I bought it & I love it

Avatar image for heqteur

@cyberpunk_2077: It isn't dead because we all have our personal preferences and a lot of people are enjoying it. Not everyone is listening to what "the internet" is telling them to do and think.

Avatar image for dudebropartyyo

@cyberpunk_2077: I enjoyed it from launch. After last big update and and addition of another 2 difficulty modes its been great

Avatar image for hughesyboozy

I think they were in a alternate reality when talking about what content would be in the game before release.

Avatar image for rodoxthedark

I have it digitally.... slight error but I hold hope they will eventually make this good, they just need to add some sort of quests

PSVR support and multi-player are all I want.

Avatar image for cherub1000

@dr_vancouver: can't help with the VR if your looking for a solid mmo space Sim, I can't recommend Elite Dangerous enough! I'm still very much a newb but I'm having crazy fun!

Avatar image for SirNormanislost

@cherub1000: oh ED the game that promised single player when i bought it then backtracked afterwards

Avatar image for cherub1000

@SirNormanislost: did it really? Had no idea as I've only been playing for a few weeks. Private group mode with my friend is great fun. Depends what your looking for I guess, a single player, story driven open galaxy would've been incredible though!

Avatar image for deactivated-5c0b07b32bf03

Please oh please oh please be PSVR support.

Avatar image for p1p3dream

@reduc_ab_: It won't have PSVR support, they would of needed to have built the game from the ground up for VR. The amount of time, money, and work that would be needed to rebuild NMS for VR would not make sense economically for them.

Avatar image for crashndash

@p1p3dream: not exactly 100% true, Oculus and Vive can support it with some minor tweaks and software. It seems that even though the game doesn't have VR support off the bat, the possibility may still be there. so they wouldn't need to build the game from the ground up, just would require a bit of work from their end.

Avatar image for p1p3dream

@crashndash: I promise I'm not just trying to be a debbie downer. I work in development (currently Annapurna) and have done VR dev specifically. Converting a non-VR game to a functional viable VR game takes a great deal of work. If all it took to convert a game to VR was a minor bit of tweaking, then pretty much ever developer would be retrofitting their software. It's a great deal more involved. For example, Skyrim and Doom are being 'retrofitted' to work with VR, and it's taken years of work- and I think people might have the wrong expectations of what is actually being done. The resulting work will not just be the same game, but with VR controls- the new versions will be substantially different, they will be curated and edited experiences from the main games. Kind of like how Rise of the Tomb Raider has a VR experience that is separate from the main game.

I know at first thought, it seems like it wouldn't take that much to make a 3D game work with VR, but there is quite a lot of issues mostly related to usability issues rather than anything technical.

You can get a rough idea of why a game needs to be made for VR, by trying to play a normal game using VORPX which is a software that you can use to do a 'quick and dirty' VR conversion. It's a pretty lousy, nauseous inducing, subpar experience...

Look, now you've made me be debbie downer again, damnit.

Cheers :)

Avatar image for deactivated-5c0b07b32bf03

@p1p3dream: Well aren't you a Debbie Downer.

Avatar image for p1p3dream

@reduc_ab_: I don't want to be Debbie Downer. :(

Hey! you know what, maybe I'm wrong and the update will have VR Support! You never know right???

@p1p3dream: :)

Avatar image for davillain-

@reduc_ab_: I'll pray for you sweetheart for that PSVR!

Avatar image for deactivated-5c0b07b32bf03

@davillain-: Well thank you, my friend;)

Seriously though, between Skyrim VR and No Man's Sky VR I'd probably play nothing else.

The big reveal will be Sean The Con telling his secret to us of how he earned millions by lying to everyone.

Avatar image for cherub1000

@speed45823: mate, he's lying on a tropical beach some place mate, laughing his ass off.

Avatar image for Jarten

From what I can tell it's connected to some sort of Cryptography puzzle they made, and its one of those Meta-style things where someone can solve the puzzle and reveal more information. So from what I can tell There are two .pdf files you can look at and one of them has some binary and other number letter sequences. The Binary part makes out the Alphabet.

Avatar image for asmoddeuss

Correction, you only need to type "List"

If you type "Start CSD.init" it will ask for a Seed. Then you can see that SEED is a valid command, now if we only knew the valid Seed number....

Avatar image for Barighm

...who cares? No, I'm serious. By this point who cares? Game's dead and gone.

Avatar image for heqteur

@Barighm: you and all the haters cared just enough to click the article and comment. Add to that the numerous fans, you know? Those who exist in actual reality. Because reality isn't made of whatever's in your head. a LOT of people love the game and are still enjoying it.

Avatar image for marl11

@Barighm: Do you really think they'd spend thousads of dollars on this if the game was dead? It might be dead to you because you haven't played it for awhile (or probably never did) but the game's got a small yet very dedicated community on its back, with youtubers, streamers and a lot of subreddits dedicated exclusivly to NMS. The game is very far from dead, wether you care about it or not :P

Avatar image for davillain-

@Barighm: I care!

Avatar image for xantufrog

@Barighm: i play it and care

Avatar image for davillain-

@xantufrog: "High Five"

I been playing it almost a year now.
