"My dream is to make everyone love games," says Journey dev

Jenova Chen says he want to help make video games a "respected" medium with universal appeal.

thatgamecompany (Journey, Flower) cofounder and president Jenova Chen is upset with the idea that as people grow up they abandon video games. He dreams of a future where "everyone loves games" and they are a "respected" medium like film or music.

"Video games have always been a part of my life," Chen told Mashable in a new interview. "I always played games with my friends, but as I got older, my friends stopped playing."

"People still read novels, watched movies, listened to music. The fact most of my friends are abandoning games makes me feel sad," he added. "How can I help video games not just be for kids, and respected from people of all ages and genders? My dream is to make everyone love video games."

"The fact most of my friends are abandoning games makes me feel sad" -- Jenova Chen

Chen went on to say that video games too often only cater to genres that are most appealing to a young male audience instead of tapping into categories that can appeal to wider audiences. In order for video games, as a medium, to become "healthy" and "respected," developers need to expand into new genres, Chen argued.

"Look at the genres women like: a romantic comedy game doesn't exist. Few examples of a documentary game exist," Chen said. "What is the equivalent of a real drama game? They don't exist. Emotion with that complexity for a more mature, older audience are necessary to make medium like video games healthy, so it can be highly respected like the film industry."

For Chen, video games can be so much more than a simple distraction from the struggles of your daily life. In fact, he argues that video games, when appropriately designed, can help people cope with loss or even help expand their minds.

"These games have more meaning than just pleasure, or just a moment of escape," Chen said. "There is more power in these games when you are doing it right. I think certain types of feelings can heal and change people, can make their lives better. We want to make positive change to the human psyche worldwide, even if you just think it's just entertainment."

thatgamecompany is currently working on an unannounced game that it will self-publish. A release date for this project and details about platforms are TBA.

My best friend's wife has never been much of a gamer at all (Mario Party on the N64 is pretty much the only thing we've ever gotten her to play), but she likes watching other people play games sometimes. She's been watching him play Infamous: Second Son these last few weeks, and she recently convinced him to play Outlast just to see his reactions.

That said, he's been trying to find a game that she could actually get interested in. He tried getting her to play Flower as well as Journey, and she HATED them. Hahaha.

@ThePowerOfHAT Has she seen The Last of Us?, also Alan Wake is a good game that will suck you in if you like stories.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Problem with games like that is the barrier to controls. I mean, we take being able to jaunt around in games for granted, but for novices, figuring out what button does what is tricky. I mean, I could tell a novice how awesome The Witcher 2 is, get them interested in the story, and they still won't play it because they can't play it. They'll just give up out of frustration. Reading, watching movies, etc., you don't need a specific skill set to do those things. It's a problem gaming has that makes it harder to rope in the new folk.

<< LINK REMOVED >> The Witcher 2 can be a hard game, but I didn't feel the controls itself were hard to master. As far as I can remember they weren't more complex than other similar RPG's (talking from a keyboard and mouse perspective, by the way).

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Good point. And here is where the race to max out resolution hurts us. Most people own a computer, or three. But not a bigassed gaming rig. If devs could put the Mass Effects and Deus Exes and Last of Uses on the laptops people already have and use, then that barrier disappears, but when everything has to run 1080p/60fps, that gets impossible.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> The price of entry is a big problem, IMO. To start playing any of the "new & exciting" games out there - the big names associated with gaming such as COD or Bioshock - one needs to have at least a console. However, the entry price is $400 - not something most people are willing to put down on a product they're not even sure they'll like.

It lets people new to video games focus on the parts they like.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I actually own Witcher 2. I heard it was a great game, so I bought it, downloaded it, watched the opening cinematic (which I thought was pretty cool), but when I got into the game, even with all the settings set to low, my midrange PC couldn't handle it all that well without lowering the resolution. I didn't want to play it like that, so I immediately got off it and didn't play it again.

I have a brand new PC now, which cost me more than double that last PC, but I just haven't gotten around to redownloading it and trying it out again. The thing that put me off, is that sometime after I attempted it the first time, I was hearing that Witcher 2 controls and system was hugely complicated and it takes a while to get used to it. So based on that, I haven't felt like trying it out again. I just don't want to spend all that time going through all the different things just to learn how to play. It may very well not be, but it just sounds tedious.

@spartanx169x @olddadgamer@ThePowerOfHATI'm with you on all counts. I mean, look at the vitriol games like "gone home" get. The comments are always ablaze with "that's not a game." Ideas that games like The Witcher or Dark Souls are the only games that really count. Which isn't the case at all. There's room for all types.

I think it's a symptom of the fact that a lot of gamers (too many) don't want gaming to appeal to everyone. Hardcore gaming is a bit of an ivory tower. It's our thing. We're the ones who do it. We don't want others in the club. After all, let's face it, a lot of us were nerds. We weren't the quarterbacks, or the leads in the school play. We were good at games. We got platinum trophies. We rocked at Dark Souls. If we keep the club exclusive, we get to hang on to the thing that is ours.

But we have to get over that. We're not gamers; we're people who game, and it's better for all of us if our club gets bigger and more diverse.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Yup. I like both types, If its a good story, I will like the game. If its got fun game play I will also like the game. And if its got both its a homerun. But a lot of gamers don't think like that.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Yup. But those games are rare, sadly. It's a catch 22: if you make a really engrossing high budget game that's wicked easy, you risk turning off your base market (that is, us). If you don't, then you risk not being able to appeal to people who aren't yet in your base market. Devs can't win.

he's right you know . i'm just 20 years old and i get this kind of stuff from my family and my friends all the time : " games are for kids , stop playing " , " loser " or "nerd " , " YOUARE WASTING YUR TIME WITH GAMES "

and the funny thing is , people who say these things to me , spend their time watching stupid movies and TV series like " how i met your mother " and they tell me I'm wasting time !!

I know 'old' people that never played video games, started playing mobile games to pass the time and now are interested in games like Portal. Games are becoming more and more established as a huge respected media, whereas a couple decades ago, it may have even been shameful for older people to be playing video games. I think the industry is going forward in the best possible way as it is.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >>Yup. I also think that, for the first time, we're getting people who are at or nearing ***gulp*** middle age who grew up gaming and, thus, get it. I mean, ten, fifteen years ago, the oldest gamers were still in their 20s, just starting out in life, not in professional jobs in cushy suburbs. That's not true anymore, and getting less true every day, especially when you consider that gaming appeals to people who tend to be smarter and wind up with the good jobs. So when people see their neighbors who obviously aren't living with their mothers are gamers, it'll help the process along.

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yeah but how can it be universal anything if people don't even have access to a game on their system?

It is okay if there are loads of games for different gamers of all ages and all of the ones that you want to play are on a system you can't have.
