Disney has announced it is producing a big-screen adaptation of the award-winning musical Hamilton. The movie will bring back the original Broadway cast, and is slated for October 15, 2021. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, Jeffrey Seller, and Thomas Kail will co-produce, and Kail will also direct.
Hamilton is a biography of United States founding father Alexander Hamilton, set primarily to hip-hop and R&B music. It debuted in 2015 and quickly became a smash hit, won several Tony and Grammy awards, and a Pulitzer Prize, among several other individual cast awards.
The big-screen adaptation will bring back writer and star Miranda as Alexander Hamilton, Daveed Diggs in a dual role as Maarquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler, Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr, Christopher Jackson as George Washington, Jonathan Groff as King George, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Peggy Schuyler and Maria Reynolds, Okieriete Onaodowan as Hercules Mulligan and James Madison, and Anthony Ramos as John Laurens and Philip Hamilton.
Kail said that the filming was shot at The Richard Rodgers Theatre on Broadway in June 2016. The big-screen adaptation will make use of "live capture" techniques to blend theater and film elements.
"I fell in love with musical storytelling growing up with the legendary Howard Ashman-Alan Menken Disney collaborations--The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, Aladdin," said Lin-Manuel Miranda in the announcement. "I'm so proud of what Tommy Kail has been able to capture in this filmed version of Hamilton--a live theatrical experience that feels just as immediate in your local movie theater. We're excited to partner with Disney to bring the original Broadway company of Hamilton to the largest audience possible."
