MTV released its nominees for the 2006 Video Music Awards, and it seems the night will see Hitman's Agent 47 and Electroplankton's...things...rubbing "elbows" with the likes of Shakira and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This year, MTV is honoring games in two VMA categories: "Best Video Game Score" and "Best Video Game Soundtrack," the former of which is new this year. At last year's awards, Dance Dance Revolution Extreme took home the soundtrack award.

MTV will air the VMAs live on August 31. The announced nominees for both categories are listed below:

Dreamfall: The Longest Jounrey (Even "Magnet" Johansen)
Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (Jeremy Soule)
Electroplankton (user-generated)
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (Tom Salta)
Hitman: Blood Money (Jesper Kyd)

Best Video Game Soundtrack:
Burnout Revenge (Electronic Arts)
Driver: Parallel Lines (Atari)
Fight Night Round 3 (Electronic Arts)
Mark Ecko's Getting Up (Atari)
NBA 2K6 (2K Games)
