Mowgli, The Other Live-Action Jungle Book Movie, Finally Gets A Trailer

A live-action Jungle Book movie? What a novel idea.

After first being set for release in October 2016, it looks like the live-action Jungle Book adaptation directed by Andy Serkis is finally hitting theaters. The first trailer for Mowgli, which stars Serkis, Rohan Chand, Cate Blanchett, Christian Bale, and Benedict Cumberbatch has arrived.

If you think you're in a time warp because you remember seeing this movie already, there's a reason for that. Disney released its own live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's story in 2016. That take starred Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, and Scarlett Johansson. It was also closer in line with Disney animated movie version of the story.

Now Playing: Mowgli - Official 1st Trailer

Serkis's adaptation began production in March 2015 and was originally titled Jungle Book: Origins and, later, Mowgli: Tales from the Jungle Book before setting on simply Mowgli. This vision for the story, based on the trailer, is a lot darker and more serious than Disney's.

Back in 2016, it was reported that Warner Bros., the studio behind the film, had approached Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban director Alfonso Cuarón about joining the project to with the film--not as a director, but a "friend to the studio." The goal was to help Mowgli stand out as different from Disney's Jungle Book. Still, regardless of any change in tone or content, it's hard to imagine Mowgli not being measured against that particular adaptation.

Take a look at the trailer for Mowgli above and decide for yourself. Is this a movie you're excited to see or did you get your fill with Disney's version in 2016? Mowgli hits theaters on October 19.
