Now Playing: The Best Classic Games That Still Hold Up Today - Steam Punks

Microsoft has announced that Xbox One consoles will soon enable mouse and keyboard support. The company followed up with another announcement that it would be partnering with Razer to bring players additional mouse and keyboard options.

In the announcement, Microsoft added that mouse and keyboard support would be case-by-case with the choice of implementing it completely up the developers. No update is going to add mouse and keyboard support to every existing title on Xbox One. Developers will either need to patch in an update or include it in future games.

Warframe has already been confirmed as one of the first games on Xbox One to receive a patch that will allow you to play with a mouse and keyboard. Microsoft hasn't announced when the patch will be ready, just that it's arriving "in the coming weeks."

For now, mouse and keyboard functionality on Xbox One is only available for players who are a part of the Xbox Insider program. Xbox Insider allows you to test out new system updates for Xbox One consoles before they officially release for the public. Occasionally, Insiders will be able to test new features and games that are coming to Xbox One or Windows 10 PCs as well. You can head to Microsoft's website to join Xbox Insider.

Microsoft has also announced a global Xbox celebration event, called X018, will be taking place in Mexico City on November 10-11. There aren't many details about the event yet, but Microsoft said it will feature the "largest live Inside Xbox episode ever."

Well that's pretty darn awesome if I may say so. It's going to be interesting how competitive mp games like Halo are going to implement it. Just maybe need 2 long usb chord extenders now lol.

That's cool, but I doubt many people want to use a Mouse/KB from a couch distance, let alone the fact 30 fps games feel sluggish with a mouse.

This sounds great, but I don't see it being used much unless Microsoft really starts pushing it. PS3 and PS4 had mouse and keyboard support throughout their whole lives, and the amount of games that use it can be counted on both hands... maybe one.

It's super frustrating when a game like C&C Red Alert 3 comes out and then doesn't let users use better controls.

I see this being very usefull for single player campaigns and games for me personally...pvp not so much

This won’t annoy anyone in competitive multiplayer shooters...

It was a logical but late move since 99% of XBox exclusives are FPS

I felt a great disturbance in Xbox Live, as if millions of dudebros playing Halo with controllers suddenly cried out in terror, and were silenced

Avatar image for freeryu

@Thanatos2k: Heard the same thing when crossplay was announced for Gears 4, PC M&K players get mopped lol

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@freeryu: Well that's objectively false, so....

Avatar image for freeryu

@Thanatos2k: You probably don't have enough hours in MP to say that. Lets see a pic of that KD too, you use M&K I don't see it being over an .80 :)

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@freeryu: I don't play bro shooters. I play better ones.

Avatar image for freeryu
FreeRyu

@Thanatos2k: So how are you gonna say its false and you don't even play the game?? M&K users in Gears 4 are GARBAGE. What kinda shooters do you play if not "bro shooters"?

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@freeryu: It's false because it's a laughable statement with no proof given whatsoever, and developers themselves know controller is a crippled control scheme, so it's also patently objectively false.

If you're not going to provide proof for that statement that isn't some half baked anecdote, don't bother replying. (But I bet you will anyways, so get that last post in)

Avatar image for freeryu

@Thanatos2k: How is it false? Coming from a guy that doesn't play the game. Where is you're proof? I would say hop on some Gears 4 and get mopped real quick but you don't play "bro shooters".

Bet you played UC4 and Killzone though lol. M&K players being better than controller players in Gears 4 is just something people like you tell themselves to feel elite or something.

You haven't mentioned what shooters you play. Was that a lie too?

Microsoft is finally realizing their original vision for the XBox - a simple, consolized PC based on their OS and DirectX but dedicated to gaming.

Love it or hate it, it's a kind of strong vision that got lost somewhat in the course of trying to compete and is now back on track. The only flaw is that they don't truly control the PC gaming environment, and there are therefore a lot of games that either won't make it to XBox or aren't actually managed solely under their XBox application across Windows and XBox.

@LEGEND_C4A: Definitely on that one, joystick control leaves a little to be desired in that game.

@dlCHIEF58: Had to give that game a break, felt like I played the inventory screen a lot more than the game itself. when I heard it was coming out on the switch, I was all excited thinking it would have touch screen..........WRONG! :(

Looks like Microsoft finally "listened to the gamers", hurr durr.

Seriously, keyboard and mouse support? Does that mean that no Xbox console so far allowed you to use a keyboard to chat? Was that MS' way to force people to use a headset?

Avatar image for dlCHIEF58
dlCHIEF58

@Atzenkiller: EVERY Xbox console supported a keyboard for typing or chat purposes (though an adapter was required for the original). You just couldn't use them for a control scheme in games (or a mouse at all). I'll give you 1/10 for effort.

While good for some games, it literally kills competitive console games who will have a severe disadvantage for those using K&M. Rainbow Six is one that comes to mind. BUT, given that each developer needs to allow it, will help slightly.....

Avatar image for nsignific

@tman08: Siege sucks with M/K on console because it's 30 fps. So no real advantage there. I doubt many developers will choose to enable this for their multiplayer titles, anyway. Personally, I want this for single player campaings for those game swhich areunavailable on PC.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k

@tman08: I can play Mario Kart using a wheel. It sucks, but it was my choice to do so. I can choose to use the proper control method for the game if I want to or not.

Avatar image for xantufrog

@tman08: you mean disadvantage for those NOT using K&M in Rainbow Six?

On PC a lot of games already allow you to easily switch between mouse or keyboard so patching could be pretty easy

Well done Microsoft. You're only about 14 years too late to the party, but better late than never I suppose.

Hell yea, just got my Xbox a few days ago and have it setup on my PC monitor. Everyone I know who is Xbox only seems to type paragraphs in like a minute where as it would take me 10+ minutes. Plus I'd rather play with my mouse and keyboard (Been a PC only gamer for 9 years), controllers are a huge change for me when it comes to games that are not Shadow of War or something. I just hope a fair amount of games will allow for it.

Best move ever.

Pros:

1.) Now almost any game can be launched on consoles with required keyboard and mouse support. (Like - Football Managers, EU 4, CIV, etc)

2.) Imagine playing games @4K by spending only $350 for a generation.

3.) Playing FPS with mouse.

etc

Avatar image for girlusocrazy

@leysaley: Not holding out hope for sim games supporting m+k, they haven't on other consoles that have supported it, and it's been there since Dreamcast, PS2, PS3, PS4, etc

Avatar image for blitxxx1981

I'm hoping some game types (FPS def) will separate KB/M players from Gamepad players to make fair balance though (thinking of COD & BF especially)

Snazzy to have KB&M coming though :-D Could really open up & bring more "in depth" game types to the One, especially RTS (would love a new Sim City. No Xbox has ever had an edition). I bet Tropico 6 will support KB&M. Cities will likely update it to (it should). C&C if there's ever another one coming. Etc, Etc, Etc

@blitxxx1981: Matchmaking will take care of that

Avatar image for twogirlsonecub

@blitxxx1981: They can just automatically disable aim assist if you have a mouse plugged in. People don't realize how much aim assist does the work for you. Also, not all mouse players are good players. The difference between an average gamepad player with aim assist and an average mouse player without isn't that big.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@twogirlsonecub: Aim assist on a PC game is called "cheating." Controllers are that bad.

Avatar image for smashthestars

@blitxxx1981: theres already a bunch of people using adapters that are meant to help people with disabilities play, that folks are adapting to be able to dominate COD and what not with keyboards/mouse/etc. This will make that eponentially worse, because I would bet those developers are too lazy to separate them out.

Avatar image for blitxxx1981
blitxxx1981

@smashthestars: True ESPECIALLY for any COD's... Activision's not one to care; all they care about is pushing out the next COD every year and abandoning the older titles completely as quick as they can

I love that the classic COD's are BC now, but there's no reason to even play online because the 360 modders are still on the same network using built-in modded cheat discs and butchering legit One players :-(

At least COD have been adding bots since BO1 for solo play, which is way more fair because they don't cheat, lols. But too bad I'll never play "World at War" again because it's hack infested and doesn't have bots :-(

But COD's not the only series with these issues; BF BC 2, others are just as bad too. I'll be glad when MS pulls the plug on the 360 Live service so us One players can do fair multi-player on 360 BC games again. It's time imo; the One's already 5 or 6 years old now

Well now Halo 5 multiplayer is gonna have players with an unfair advantage.

Avatar image for Thanatos2k
Thanatos2k

@redhedjack: No, Halo 5 multiplayer is going to have players who choose to play at a disadvantage.

Avatar image for Pyrosa
Pyrosa

@redhedjack: Developers can (and should) have the choice what control schemes to expose to users, and can likewise expose that to matchmaking.

You can expect the 1st-party titles to patch these features in.

Avatar image for redhedjack
redhedjack

@Pyrosa: I know but, while I ain't a PC elitist, I think most can agree a mouse and keyboard make for more precise 1st person aiming than a controller.

Avatar image for TurboGraphix

@redhedjack: That sorta happens with Gears right now. Wallbouncing with a mouse is 100x easier than with a controller even if you play with the claw method. It's all good though, you don't run in to the pc users all the time, majority are still using controller on xbox.

Avatar image for freeryu

@TurboGraphix: Even when you do run into a PC player they still get mopped

That's weird. I was able to use m/kb on the Minecraft beta months ago. I haven't checked to see if it still works after release.

Anyway, I don't imagine it will be widely used. PS3 supported it and I can only think of one game that took advantage of it.
