EA Games has released new information about its upcoming online racing game, Motor City Online. The game celebrates the golden age of American hot rods, and it features classic cars, stock cars, and muscle cars from the 1930s through the 1970s. The cars are all licensed from the Big Three American car manufacturers: Ford, Chevrolet, and Chrysler. Players can race more than 50 classic cars, including the '49 Mercury Coupe, the '57 Chevrolet Bel Air, the '64 Ford Mustang, and the '69 Pontiac GTO.
In addition to providing a wide selection of classic cars, Motor City Online lets players customize their cars with more than 1000 real-life parts to give them an extra edge in competition. Players can customize the performance, aerodynamics, and appearance of their cars by upgrading engine blocks, adding spoilers, and changing the paint job, hubcaps, and license plates.
Motor City Online features two game modes: sim world and arcade action. In sim world, players buy, sell, trade, and customize their cars and then take them out to race. The game features a wide variety of tracks that ranges from city streets and country roads to drag strips and pro tracks. To augment their weekly salary, players can earn extra money either by winning pro races or by betting against other drivers. Arcade action is a simplified mode that lets players pick a car, a track, and a race and then jump right into the competition.
Motor City Online is being developed by EA Seattle, the developer behind Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit and Need For Speed: High Stakes. The game is scheduled for release in September 2001. For more information about Motor City Online, take a look at our Q&A with the developers.
