The top selling game of 2014 was Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare, according to NPD sales data received today. Sales included physical retail numbers across all platforms, including PC. Overall annual video game sales totalled at $13.10 billion, up from 2013's total of $12.94 billion. This marks a one percent increase in physical retail sales.

The top ten games sold for last year is listed below. Note that the figures only represent physical retail, and do not account for digital or pre-owned game sales, nor does it account for games that were sold in a bundle with hardware.

  2. Madden NFL 15 (360, PS4, XBO, PS3)

EA Sports' American football game Madden NFL 15 was the third best-selling game in the month of December.

NPD executive director David Riley added that "3DS games Pokemon Omega Ruby and Pokemon Alpha Sapphire would make the top ten software list when ranked on a SKU basis rather than a title basis." The full list for the top selling games of December is below.

Its all about the marketing... we think we are so smart but its still very easy to fool us by knowing how our brain works and all the problems it has.

If digital sales were included, Minecraft would be #1 by a long shot.

I can't believe people are still buying that cr@p year after year. Activision made it seem like pre-orders for the game were way down compared to last years game, but it still managed to be the best selling game of 2014.

And Shadow of Mordor is nowhere in sight. Probably thee BEST game in the Tolkien universe ever made, and it's not even in the top ten. But it looks like at least 8 of the 10 games were driven by casual gamers.

It's pathetic that our industry is driven by people who don't care that much about it at all.

Advanced Warfare is the best Call of Duty ever made, for single player and multiplayer. I didn't even like COD4 that much to be honest, and I didn't bother buying anything after World at War, but this one was well worth the $40 I spent on it. I'm not sure if it deserves to be number one on the list, but it is definitely by far the most innovative game in the series.

CoD may not be break as many records as it used to, but it still has plenty of meat on its (exo)skeleton, for better or worse. As for other games people are tired of, Minecraft got no. 5 on the top 2014 games, which is fun for me as a Swedish person, but I personally don't care about that game or CoD for that matter. There's not a single game on these lists that I feel like playing, but I have more than enough games in my backlog, so I don't mind.

The worst games are always on top

<< LINK REMOVED >> oh yes goat simulator is not in the list thats pathetic lol.

Congrats ActivisionBlizzard/ Bungie for Destiny.

Very predictable list, and I don't think there's anything wrong with that and gaming isn't going downhill like people keep saying thanks to games like these that drive in those people who normally don't even play games. Only games on this list I played were Watch Dogs and SSB on 3DS, haven't gotten Wii U version yet, and GTAV though that was in 2013. It's just reality and very predictable that games like Divinity, Shovel Knight, Transistor or any of those great gems released this year don't make these lists even if they get just universal acclaim, the people who play those aren't the majority by long shot and nothing really wrong with that, many of them still do very well overall and from the looks of it they're not going away anytime soon. IMO it's great that there're games that appeal to every kind of gamer, be it the yearly sports/cod guy or someone who loves rpg's, action games, story based stuff, rogue-likes and/or space sims etc. Nothing wrong with all types of people consuming the same media

What a couple of sad lists. Two, maybe three games are in any way worthwhile. Gaming really is going downhill.

Avatar image for washington

while i dont personally play most of these games either, saying that these lists means gaming is going downhill is just lame.

Avatar image for Hurvl

<< LINK REMOVED >> Yes, I agree. I only play PC games and 2014 was a great year, but most of the PC sales are digital. You also have to remember that there were more than these 12 games for sale during that year and that many of them were considered successful, which means we'll get more of that.

Avatar image for gandospot

Destiny is still selling like hot cakes thats great as this one is the worst news for Steam losers ever.

Avatar image for ArabrockermanX

<< LINK REMOVED >> Or it just kind of shows just how f*cking stup!d most console gamers... Run a bunch of big flashy adds and they'll buy anything.

Avatar image for BradBurns

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Kinda but the sales numbers that console gamers generate is the economic engine of growth for the game industry. I dont think publishers get too excited to invest millions in a AAA game to mainly sell it as $5 download on Steam a year later. That's just not sustainable. As far as I'm aware console software sales constitutes a majority of overall game sales.

So be grateful that these people with less...discerning tastes exist. I just wish they would buy games from non gigantic publishers more often.

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I'm really tired of re-posting this again and again, but oh well...

>The Last Of Us, a high-profile 15-month old PlayStation 3 exclusive, recently surpassed 6 million copies sold. Diablo III hit 6.3 million sales in its first week of release on PC.

Evidently, you're not very "aware".

Avatar image for BradBurns

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't know but I have my doubts about big budget AAA games selling better on PC. If that were true, they wouldn't be treated as the red-headed step child of ports. Big publishers place much more emphasis on the console versions of their flagship games. The PC versions are often rushed, delayed, or sometimes even outright cancelled. It just makes no business sense. Overall global revenue in PC software might have surpassed console(according to VG CHartz btw) How about individual unit sales?

The revenue PC gets is from games like League of Legends, which really only work on PC and most console-only gamers don't care for. I personally would never touch a console game if League of Legends and Free-2-Play games were the main, money-making games on it.

Plus, personally I don't care for digital-download games which is the primary delivery option for PC. Digital-only sucks. When console games become digital only I will happily move on to another hobby. In short, my main point was that if PC games sold as well, the console games market simply wouldn't exist or at least it would not have anywhere near the market share that it currently holds.

Avatar image for Hurvl

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't want to rub it in and act all superior PC master race towards << LINK REMOVED >>, but that linked report shows that console gamers with more money than taste isn't the necessary evil it's claimed to be. We'll surely be worse off without them and it's possible that the majority of PC game sales is made by people with more money than taste, but it's not like the industry is depending on the massive horde of console gamer "sheep".

Avatar image for BradBurns

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> I don't think that nearly as many AAA games would exist without console unit sales. My evidence is in how they treat PC ports, like a 3rd priority.

Avatar image for Monsterkillah

Ironic since the top ten games on that list are probably the most hated among gs readers

But then again Gs users are usually anti mainstream gamers so im not surprised to see that, everyone have their own opinions

Avatar image for Stebsis

<< LINK REMOVED >> Except SSB that everyone seems to love

Avatar image for metallinatus

Avatar image for vanvir1

<< LINK REMOVED >> It might be true. I don't know why you would use the word "hate" since in my opinion you either like the game and it's fun or it's not. All in all I think Destiny and cod are games that are fun to play (multiplayer as was said by many gs editors) so it's no surprise that those are on top.

Avatar image for Creed02

yay .. cod made it again to the top .. and gta could have been if they had released the pc versino .. pfff

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

That list is depressing, in as far as quality compared to so many other games that have come out.

Avatar image for hystavito

<< LINK REMOVED >> Oh well, it's reality :). Gaming products are mostly consumed by people who do not post comments on gaming sites, or even browse gaming sites. There's always a big gap between "them" and "us". I don't mean that they are any less gamers than us, or any less intelligent, or anything like that at all.

I will say they are less informed, they probably don't even know about many of the quality titles you might be thinking of. If they did they might buy some of them as well, but they are still always going to buy those big IPs they love and enjoy, and there's nothing wrong with that, is there?

Avatar image for ArabrockermanX

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Unfortunately there is a "them vs us" kind of thing going on because as long as there is more of them games will continue to go the CoD route. Publishers won't publish games like Dark Souls if they think it isn't making as much money as possible( have the devs make a mainstream game instead).

Avatar image for jenovaschilld

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Your right, but it is also sad. When amazing games like Fallout 3, Suikoden, Xenogears, Uncharted, and more and then get outsold by games like Disneys Cars, Hanna Montana, X-Files the video game, and quick to retail tie ins - bring the entire quality of the video game industry down. Because years ago there was a clear epiphany, "why make an Oblivion, or ICO when we can make a dozen Just Dance and/or yearly edition of dredge we keep pumping out." Quality nah... Quantity.

I mean I know there are just stupid consumers.. Take all of the Paranormal like movies, but mothers or grandmothers or just to many people caught up by the dirt bike on the cover promising EXTREME.. gaming. Because you cannot bring a game back like you can a toaster and say, "this chit doesn't work worth a damn, I want my money back and by something better." And people are more informed about another FAcebook picture of Obama photoshopped in the 911 towers.. then they read gaming reviews or gaming development.

I know this is how things are ... but I still want to change it.

Avatar image for swavo13

Well it's also the fact that some of these new edition games, people play the living hell out of them. For most that buy fifa for instance they literally put thousands of hours into that game so they justify it's worth(unless it's like AC:Unity which can't be justified).

I do feel you're right though, something has to change.

I do plan on playing COD AW at some point, looks like a great game.

Avatar image for masterpnut3

Me too if not AW the next installment. Maybe this time in a WW setting and not set in the future.

Avatar image for el_duderino8

Ugh. GTA V should have PC in there. Damn you Rockstar!!

Avatar image for bdrtfm

I love how Destiny sold better on Xbox despite Bungie selling out to Sony. Karma's pretty cool sometimes.

Avatar image for gameoftrolls

<< LINK REMOVED >> This is based on US sales. In other countries around the world, Globally PS4 WON...

Avatar image for Stogin

<< LINK REMOVED >> Except that it doesn't account for bundles, which I'm sure Sony sold a bunch of.

Avatar image for Oloryn

The lack of Assassin's Creed might prove a point or two about Ubisoft's insistence that we apparently want one or more entries in the series every year. Well, one can hope, anyway.

Avatar image for Hurvl

<< LINK REMOVED >> That Watchdogs got on the top 2014 list might persuade them that we want one of those each year, however. Right :P?

Avatar image for xisiuizado

Or, since almost every retailer was pushing the Creed games for free on X1, very few people had to buy them.

Avatar image for hystavito

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Both fair points. I will add that I have seen a lot of those Xbox One AC codes, both Unity and Black Flag, for sale on forums and such. I might actually buy them if I find a low enough price, so far around $25 is best I've seen. I'm not very interested in Unity but $25 for both games is pretty cheap.
