Mortal Kombat movie producer mentions new fighting game

Producer Lance Sloane says the movie team is trying to "sync" its release around upcoming but currently unannounced Mortal Kombat game.

A new Mortal Kombat could be in the works, with a new film for the fighting franchise looking to "sync up" with the launch of the new game.

No Caption Provided

Lance Sloane, producer of webseries Mortal Kombat Legacy, announced plans for a new Mortal Kombat movie at San Diego Comic Con 2013.

Speaking to GamerHub.TV (via CVG), Sloane said the team has "been in greenlight committee for a while at the studio and we've got a great script."

"And we've got a great director with Kevin Tancharoen, who is on board."

Sloane said the team is working out the best time to launch the new movie, and wants to "sync" the release with a new, currently unannounced game. "It's just figuring out the business side of it and when we would do it and when we would launch it and how do we sync up with the launch of the game that they're working on now."

"It's not 100 per cent yet, but we're getting closer every day," concluded Sloane.

Mortal Kombat was released in 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and was released on PC earlier this month. The 2011 title was the first game in the series to be published by Warner Bros., after the publisher acquired the rights and development staff during the collapse of Midway Games.

Developer NetherRealm Studios started publicly hiring for next-gen development in April 2012..

Between Mortal Kombat titles, NetherRealm Studios has also worked on DC Comics brawler Injustice: Gods Among Us, which launched earlier in 2013.

I swear to the heavens, If they violate the MK series anymore with this stupid (we just want to make money bullshit) I'm going postal. like it wasn't bad enough that the abomination known as Mortal Kombat vs. DC universe existed, but if they make a MK movie and I don't see some magic ability, otherworldly, hypergraphic fucking violence, it's just shit. Scorpion died and came back to life from the Netherealm as a ninja spectre, Baraka is a Tarkatan from Outworld, and Reptile is a Zaterran. Shang Tsung is a fucking sorcerer who uses fucking magic. Mortal kombat is a tournament designed to keep peace between the realms. Who ever is in charge of these new projects know what's right and need to act accordingly.

"Lance Sloane, producer of webseries Mortal Kombat Legacy"

I hate what they did with that series. They screwed up the characters and the canon. They changed the key plot points in the story and took away the important and iconic parts of a character. I refused to watch it any more after they FUBAR'd Scorpion so much.

I would not trust those people to make a Mortal Kombat movie if they can't stay true to the source material. Source material that has so much potential for a great movie!

I love Mortal Kombat, and I'm looking forward to the next game. I just wish WB would make better decisions as far as films go. First they announce a stupid Superman VERSUS Batman movie which is going to kill the DC movie franchise before it truly starts, and now they are trying to kill off any chance of getting a true MK movie.

@Scorpion1813 Sounds like any Hollywood "interpretation" of a famous myth or legend. They'll turn a beat-'em-up into a ****-'em-up with their warping of the source material to fit some twisted plotline.

What I don't get is how this movie is going to "tie-in" with this new MK game. They obviously won't do the same story as the game, otherwise you have two versions of the same story released around the same time.

Would they then base it on the story for MK(2011)? But then why bother, why not just buy the game for that story. It's too soon for movies based on this story to happen.

Will they do something similar to Legacy? Then it's not really something they can "tie-in" to the game series as the story, characters, and pretty much everything except names have been changed. It's not really MK and they would do well to keep the two as separate as possible.

Either way, they need to get rid of the guy that did Legacy, he's an abomination to the franchise. More so than Annihilation and MKvsDC.

if they want to create a good movie everything about the movie has to be greater then anything we know about in the video games for example Johnny Cages head fatality in the video game he only takes off one persons head in the movie he could be surrounded by at least five enemies well he would knock off each one of there heads instantly, another example take the pit stage in any mortal kombat game well if you showed the pit in the movie lets make it far a wide and much deeper with millions of spikes under a thin wooden swinging bridge or perhaps the pit would be so huge in the far out distance you could see 10 or 15 bridges with other fighters fighting and suddenly getting knocked off those bridges and falling deep into this huge spike pit where there are thousands of other unlucky victims hanging on the walls and at the bottom also the spikes at the bottom would be much longer see that sounds crazy but the deepness of the movie has to be greater then the game in every way no less. Mortal Kombat is a bloody game so the movie has to be even bloodier or it just is not mortal kombat thats something alot of people that dont know about how mortal kombat works would find this maybe to gruesome but thats mortal kombat i mean check out the movie Ninja Assassin with my boy rain that was one bloody azz movie they went all out MK should be no less. When i think about Cyrax or Sceptor ? i think about the predator cause i bet you if the latest Mortal Kombat would have gotten the predator as a download character that wouldnt be a big surprise to MK fans but still cool though and the last part probably didnt have anything to do with what i was talking about earlier but i wanted to say it anyway.

100% agree!

That Legacy crap was, well, crap. They NEED to stay true to the source material. It already works so well for story, they don't really need to change anything to better suit live-action the way superhero movies do.

Legacy/Rebirth took way too many liberties with the franchise and fucked it up beyond all recognision. Don't let those guys make a MK movie in the same vein!

My biggest pet peeve this console gereration: Mortal Kombat (2011) is NOT Mortal Kombat 9!!! It's the 8th MK game in the main series. 8th!!!!!

1- MK, 2- MK2, 3- MK3, 4- MK4, 5- MK Deadly Alliance, 6- MK Deception, 7- MK Armageddon. 8- MK (2011)

The opening movie shows that it clearly takes place immediately after Armageddon before time traveling back. Shaolin Monks, Mythologies, and Special Forces aren't numbered games, and MK vs DC was a NON-canon crossover game like Marvel vs Capcom. Marvel vs Capcom isn't called Street Fighter (insert number here) by SF fans. Street Fighter x Tekken isn't called Street Fighter 5 by anybody. Plus most of the MK fans I know refuse to acknowledge MK vs DC even existed because it bastardized MK. So why the hell is it counted as a numbered game in the series!

You are correct, I don't know why people call this game MK9. The title of the game is actually just 'Mortal Kombat', but since there is already a game by this name (the original back in '92). This game is usually (and officially) referred to as Mortal Kombat (2011).

It's only unofficial places that refer to it as MK9, and as you pointed out, it should, in fact, be MK8.

I'm curious though: if the latest game is simply 'Mortal Kombat', what will the next game be? 'Mortal Kombat 2 (2014)'? Maybe have a subtitle ala 'Deadly Alliance' and 'Deception'? At least those games had numbers so that people could figure out the order.

I think they've shot themselves in the foot with their naming conventions.

If you liked the first movie, you'll probably be disapointed by this one if it is anything like the recent Legacy series (it's being made by the same people).

@Scorpion1813 @soulless4now There's bad and then there's bad. The MK movie with Christopher Lambert is bad in a very enjoyable way, but there's also the plain bad. The 1990 version of Captain America is a good example of bad just being bad.

I don't mind the original MK movie. At least it tried to stay true to the games. In fact, a lot of retcons that happen in the games were changed to be more like that movie.

Annihilation and Legacy on the other hand have completely fucked up the lore for the sake of fucking it up. Legacy more so.

If I remember correctly, the guy that did Rebirth, and later Legacy, said that he didn't even like MK, and thus making it into something he does like. That's basically a big "**** you" to MK fans and claiming his own work is better in a "this is how it should be" kind of way. I may be wrong on that, but I'm fairly positive that's what I heard.

@Elite_Bushido @jack00 But there's a long history of games tied to movies bombing badly. Just think about every Star Trek, Aliens, or Terminator game published in the last 10 years.

The good thing is that MK is an established game franchise with some great past titles--which means that the movie is more likely to suck than the game.

I have no idea what these "ultras" are, but the true Brutalities are where you beat your opponent to a pulp. Literally a pulp! With bones and blood and guts everywhere.

Wewt! Can't wait! And it's most reassuring that they've already begun work on a new MK game. And here I thought they've been spending their entire time making Injustice DLC.

They've probably already finished that stuff, both even still, not every member of their studio would be busy working on said DLC. They could have had writers and concept artists working on their next game before Injustice even shipped.

if they do a movie that syncs with the next game in the series...I probably won't see it...I've gotten to be very anti-game adaptation.....

I've seen enough crappy game adaptations that even if there's a chance on could be good I'm against it......
