More Than 1 Million People Still Play 2012's Borderlands 2 Every Month

Take-Two also confirms the entire Borderlands franchise has now reached 43 million copies shipped.

The Borderlands franchise has reached new sales heights ahead of the release of Borderlands 3 later this year. Parent publisher Take-Two Interactive announced today that entire shoot-and-loot series has now hit 43 million copies shipped across all titles.

Take-Two, which owns Borderlands publisher 2K Games, added that Borderlands 2 alone has shipped around 20 million copies. Management added that the game is still played by more than 1 million monthly unique users, which is impressive given the game released all the way back in 2012.

With Borderlands 2 shipping 20 million copies by itself, that leaves a further 23 million across the other the other releases. The figure was announced as covering the entire Borderlands franchise, so this presumably includes Borderlands 1 and Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, though it's not clear if it also counts sales of spinoffs like Telltale's Tales from the Borderlands or the iOS game Borderlands Legends. The latest Borderlands release is the Borderlands: Game of the Year Edition, which launched in April.

Borderlands 3 comes out in September for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, and Take-Two expects it to be yet another hit. CFO Lainie Goldstein declined to share a specific unit sales projection figure for the title, but she did mention that Take-Two expects all of its new games to perform better than the previous release, and this is no different for Borderlands 3.

"For Borderlands 3 we have really high expectations, and we're really excited for the title," she said.

Goldstein also fielded a question regarding the margin profile of Borderlands 3, which is developed by Gearbox, a studio that it does not own. She confirmed that margins--that is, how much Take-Two will make on the game--are "in line" with games that Take-Two's own studios develop internally.

For me, what still attracts me about BL2 is the many builds, the struggle of finding what you want, the exploration which is both free and story based, the progression system - which is hard as hell, but you can look at it as a challenge. The combat is great - but the one thing I didn't like about it was the slag - or better the double-shot system. If they would have left it to elemental weaknesses, or damage type (say you have an enemy that you have to critical hit or your shot doesn't do damage, for example). They could have enemies who you can only hurt with certain weapon types - but that "slag them up, and THEN shoot them) was the one thing that annoyed me. Other than that, it was much better than the PS to me.

Also, as others pointed out, the PS had large boring areas. Unlike others, some of the humor was too vulgar for my taste (though I thought Tiny Tina was hilarious). There also is still a lot of player support for BL2, including community patches that make the game a bit more forgiving than it was after some DLC was dropped (Take Two changed drop rates and nerfed some things after they introduced some of the DLC - like how you get Serif Crystals, and making Raid bosses practically impossible to farm). All in all, BL2 is just a better drop in and play game than the PS, despite the tight story integration of the PS.

I don't understand the hype behind this franchise. I got bored of the 2 later games that came out. The first was one of the best shooters, but after that, they kinda felt the same. It was shoot loot and repeat, and the enemies were very spongy in the prequel which made it a chore traversing from one map to another. My friends always said let's play boringlands LOL.

@Ansem_Rev: I played Halo, who hasn't???

I enjoyed Halo and can't wait for the collection on Steam. Borderlands isn't bad but boring and that doesn't mean I don't know what a good game is.

Me and crew were already getting burnt out on FPS during the 7th gen and ready to move on. Then my buddy said, "try this game its really stupid, goofy, and #$##ing fun as can be." Borderlands was a hoot, with some very smooth gameplay along with a so so RPG. But holy shit, Borderlands 2 came along. For a month or two groups of us met at each others houses to play this game. Co-op fun at its best, pretty decent story. Great value for the amount of hours we put in for sure.

I am looking forward to BL3 - if it comes even close to 2 in terms of quality, I will be one happy gamer.

It makes sense, BL2 is still the best overall loot shooter available. Some of the newer options might do one or two things better, but overall, if you want fun gameplay, excellent variety of loot, a good story, entertaining side content (sometimes just because of the dialogue from the characters), excellent characters, excellent story DLC (some of which is extremely good, like Assault on Dragon's Keep and the Clap-tastic Voyage), very fun co-op gameplay, graphics that still look good 7 years later, etc.., the choice is Borderlands 2.

The newer loot shooters concentrated too hard on being live service games and not hard enough on having good stories, memorable characters, and fun loot, as far as I'm concerned. And I say that as someone who liked Division 1 and 2 and enjoyed Destiny 2 (after trying it when the game was free).

That's unexpected. And I really don't see how the other 2 games could have sold 23 millions total. They couldn't keep up with the second one at all.

Yep. It still amazes me how active the community is for this game. Not surprising in the least, though. Bl2 is just so replayable and is a damn great game. A friend and I are playing the whole series in prep for 3 and we've been having a blast.

Given how many copies of Borderlands I see for sales on the shelves of drug stores and convenience stores, I think that is more a reflection of how good 2K is at convincing retailers to stock their games than it is how well the games actually sell. I know people who have the game, but certainly not nearly as many people who have 25 million+ selling games like Call of Duty or GTA5.

@Barighm: Why would retailers stock games that don't sell? You don't need to convince anyone to sell a game that is in demand. Their sales numbers will tell them if it's worth keeping in stock or not.

@Barighm: I mean if you want to be in denial of how well it is selling for whatever reason then ok.

Borderlands 2 is just such an incredible game with a massive replay value, and it just doesn't get old, so I can understand why so many still play it. Even just writing about it now makes me want to play it again, test out another build that I haven't played and find more awesome weapons.

I have been replaying it like crazy since the BL3 announcement. The UHD patch on PS4 also helped. Currently tackling UVHM with my Maya.

@Ansem_Rev: No, PS3 is the worst version. PS4 is fine now, running at 60fps at 4k
