"More Realistic" Guitar Hero In Development for Xbox One, PS4 - Report

New music game from Activision will reportedly be announced at E3 and launch before the end of the year.

Activision is getting the band back together, according to a new report.

The publisher is working on an all-new, "more realistic" Guitar Hero game for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, according to Kotaku UK, which cites two different sources.

The new Guitar Hero game, which wasn't given a name, will be announced at E3 in June, according to one source.

No Caption Provided

The music game, which would be the first since 2010's Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock, will sport a "more realistic" visual look, compared to the "cartoonish" style of past games, according to another source. Expect more authentic-looking artists and even crowds.

In addition, the report claims that Activision is making new guitar peripherals to launch with the Guitar Hero title, though no further information was provided. The new Guitar Hero game is reportedly scheduled to launch before the end of 2015.

An Activision representative said: "We don't comment on rumor or speculation, but have previously said, that as one of the most beloved entertainment franchises, we would only bring Guitar Hero back if we developed the right innovations to usher the franchise into the new generation of gaming."

Activision officially put the Guitar Hero franchise--as well as the Tony Hawk series--on hiatus in early 2011. It was already confirmed that Tony Hawk will return this year on Xbox One and PS4, and now it sounds like Guitar Hero is making a comeback too.

A seventh Guitar Hero game was in development, but Activision canceled this project.

Previous Guitar Hero developer Neversoft and RedOctane are no longer in operation. Kotaku's report doesn't name a developer for the new game outright, but does say the title is coming from one of Activision's developers on the United States west coast.

The rumored revival of Guitar Hero comes less than a week after another report claimed Harmonix was working on a brand-new Rock Band game for Xbox One and PS4.

The Guitar Hero series was once a juggernaut, $2 billion business for Activision. However, sales of later games dropped dramatically. The latest entry in the series, Warriors of Rock, sold fewer than 100,000 copies during its debut month.

Realistically it will include whatever the new Rock Band will include but on a dumbed down scale.

Warriors of Rock was dumb. After a few GH games I switched to Rock band as it was more of a platform and was obviously made by fans of music.

Need to support eDrum kits and sport drumming tutorials like Rocksmith does. That would bring me back again. I used to use my DTXplorer kit with a midi converter for the old games. Would certainly lover it if they took a more 'instructive' approach with drums.

I was a huge Guitar Hero fan, until I picked up Rocksmith 2014 and realized I wasted about 2 years of my life playing with plastic buttons. Unless they introduce a feature that's just like Rocksmith into it, it's a waste of time

<< LINK REMOVED >> It's no more a "waste of time" than any other video game ever released. Anyone that picked up GH looking to learn how to play guitar from it is a fool.

I'm sure you have a PC that can handle it; Get Guitar Hero 3 for PC with Guitar Hero Control Center (from score hero). You can do custom songs on it and play to your hearts content. My GH3 PC is overly modded to the max and has about 2000 custom songs.

me and my friends still get together and play.

I don't really like modded songs, they feel more unrealistic than the ones genuinely released (even with plastic instruments).

<< LINK REMOVED >><< LINK REMOVED >> Juste use Phase Shift. It supports everythying and more. (Pro g/b/k/d). Only thing it lacks is vocals, but the game is still in production, it's not finished. You can also play real drums for songs charted with it (Rim shot+open hi-hat, and possibly things I don't know; I don't play drums), real keys if you own a real keyboard (2 hands). Real guitar is pretty much Rock Band like, no real guitar support, everything is MIDI, you can use any real MIDI guitar though, unlike Rock Band. Online play up to 15 people; any instrument compination (Dance + Real keys? why not)...

Thousands of songs are around the net, and yes you can convert RB, GH, FOF, SM and even RS charts (you need a bit of knowledge on how they work though).

Anyways, this should be what RB/GH players should play waiting for the new game and hoping it's good.

This is why I picked up Rocksmith 2014. I've had it for 3-4 months and i'm reading tabs of songs I never thought I'd be able to play.

I hope this doesn't end up stealing the spotlight from Rock Band, since RB is pretty much a better game in almost every way. Hopefully they'll learn from their mistakes and won't run it into the ground with 6 games a year again.

Realistic is nice and all but when those bars are scrolling and you're punching those buttons you really can't take any time to notice the rest of the graphics.

Being a Guitar player since I was 16 always made these games harder since I try to play the songs I already know on guitar. You must unlearn, what you have learned....

This game genre was a fad, and that fad ended. I can't imagine this (or a new rock band) will sell very well at all. I'm certainly not interested, and I was a huge fan of the genre back in its hayday.

The question is, are people willing to spend their money on more plastic peripherals? Because you know this game won't be compatible with the old stuff.
