More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

No Caption Provided

Sony's Andrew House confirmed Neo just days before E3, at the time also mentioning that it would not be discussed at the event. For its part, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio during its briefing, a system the company describes as "the most powerful console ever made."

Scorpio, which features 6 teraflops of performance, is scheduled to come out in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced for the Neo or Scorpio; in both cases, the games that work on PS4 and Xbox One today will also be supported on the new systems.

If Neo is indeed coming out this year, some possible, but not confirmed, venues for Neo's official announcement might include Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or Paris Games Week. It might also be that Sony hosts a dedicated event for the unveiling, as it did for the PS4.

With the "no exclusives" policy absolutely nobody is 'forced' to upgrade, because the exact same core game ships on PS4/Neo. There is no Neo game on store/digital shelves. There is no Neo game that won't also exist on the original PS4.

The choice to upgrade is exactly that, a choice. Anyone claiming otherwise is just having a mental block; a.K.a. hardware envy.

Will every single PSVR game release on PS4? Yes. And certification mandates a 1080p/60fps experience. Considering the PSVR physical hardware is capped at 1080p and 60fps is a hard pre-requisite, Neo modes of PSVR titles cannot surpass those ingrained specs. Instead, you can expect richer complexity: better assets, textures, LoDs, draw distances.

Again, though, since a developer is forbidden from releasing Neo-only titles, and all PS4K titles will also be available on PS4, the upgrade is entirely optional. Only your techno-slave brain is responsible for prodding you into believing you can't live without Neo.

@runstalker: or someone just wants to buy one cause they have the money - and they don't have a current ps4 and want a ps4 so why not wait if its coming right around the corner ...people look into things far too much and wanna be all technical , its actually pretty simple people want the best one they can buy and some of us with decent jobs can afford one (and it won't hurt the bank) and I could careless about 4k whether its even possible or not on a console which I doubt but thats beyond the point, a better ps4 then the current, coming supposebly sometime in 2016, I don't care about price its not as if I buy a new device every year (maybe every 4 years depending) tech doesn't last forever and since I'm one of those ones that want a ps4, and why buy one now, when quite literally around the corner there will be a newer better model, even if only "slightly" thats fine. I own Nintendo consoles, PC, handheld[s], etc - so I'm not a fanboy or I don't game exclusively on 1 device, though I do prefer Sony consoles and I've enjoyed what time I've spent on the current CUH-1215A PS4 model, so I assume the Neo couldn't be worse, but better...and why not ? even if its more expensive which I think we can all agree the current PS4 models will drop in price ($300 or something) making room for the new NEO at $400, $450 or something.

When the generation is so bad you need to release it twice.

Shame you can't use any of that power to run systems because all games need to work on the weaker original console.

Like a PC upgrade but all you can do is increase graphics.

@PinchySkree: big deal who cares, not that bad you don't have to buy the new console infact all ps4 and xone games will be supported by the current models, some want newer better (and some like me haven't even bought a ps4 yet) and I want one, and it won't hurt the bank one bit...so why not just wait, a few $100 isn't really a big deal once every 4-5 years I don't even care about 4k (if its even remotely possible with current tech in a console which I assume it wont be) but thats beyond the point...a new system is right around the corner, for someone like me who never buys anything day 1, including new devices/platforms I wait...I have enough to play with just a current PC, handheld, Wii U, and X360. But I do wan't a PS4, and if a new one is right around the corner why not...its not confusing or bad to me, its a choice nothing more as the top comment says your not forced to buy a new PS4, even to play current games, or upcoming games so...besides with the new rollout you can return your PS4 get $250 and use that to buy a new system then we are only talking an additional $200 or so to put out for a new device...either buy it or dont. Not too big a deal.

@turianshepard: Actually, it can get very confusing at retail for consumers. As someone who has worked at a major retailer selling consoles and games, I can tell you that shoppers just don't know. They aren't idiots, but many aren't tech savvy or follow this day to day. I could explain it well but it's just a lot of information to take in and try to decide on, especially when you have multiple generations on the shelf from 3 different manufacturers and parents are going to drop $3-500 on their kid (including tax). Now we'll have 2 generations and 3 performance tiers from both MS and Sony plus Nintendo and god knows how many SKUs with varying game bundles and hard drive capacities come Christmas. Many times they come in for a console their child asked for, not knowing what that is or that any others exist. It's like walking into a minefield! And all Timmy really wanted was Minecraft for his Wii because that's all his friends at school talk about.

@Razorlight6: Not only that, but Sony also got spooked and refused to reveal any information at E3. Give your fanbase a little heads up at least. This is what happens when you try to get cute.

@draign: Apple changed the game long ago. Customer expectations are more in-line with what Sony is doing than MS announcing a year out. When Apple announces a product, it's either available that day or one month away. It taps into a buyer feeding frenzy. Smart companies are adopting similar announcement strategies.

A message to all gamers. These companies know they have us hooked on tech and games like junkies awaiting their next fix. They have the masses hanging on every word. Don't be like sheep and just follow mindlessly. You are being gamed for your hard earned cash. Lets all make a stand, together, every last one of us who bought a PS4 or an Xbox One. LETS TAKE THE GAME TO THEM, BEAT THE BOSSES AS WE ARE ALL SO GOOD AT IN GAMES. LETS WIN AT THEIR GAME.REFUSE THESE NEW MACHINES IN THE NAME OF VALUE FOR WHAT WE BOUGHT. @bigbadcrawford:

What you are saying is true, but it's also the only way technology advances. In terms of the PS4 Neo it is an optional upgrade. Games will still run fine on the original PS4. I doubt Sony or Microsoft would ever require upgrading unless the console had been around for a long period of time like 10 years. I actually think this is a better way to do than to bring out a PS5 or a new Xbox because all your old games will still run on the new console. It's a much better system than having to get completely new games for each generation of console. It's why PCs are superior in many ways. You can still play your old games on your new PC.

@puckhog27: They clearly have you mesmerised by the shinier goods. Don't believe their lies. People stand together over nothing in life. They just do as they are told, like good little sheep. This is just another area of life where people don't need to put up with something, but they get brainwashed by online media and marketing, and regurgitate it at each other for superiority, because peoples sense of self worth is wrapped up in crap. Oh well hell mend everyone, this is why the top two percent in the world rule over us all with ease. Sheeple. Waiting for the slaughter.

@bigbadcrawford: true... i won't be supporting the neo. others should do the same if they value the essence of what consoles should be. that being said, i am fine with a shorter console cycle. releasing ps5 in two years makes sense to me. no need for 4k, though. 1080p is fine for most people... if they can get every game to also run at 60fps with even greater leaps in visual fidelity, ai and physics, we will be just fine.

wow, people are still posting on this topic... after reading many of the comments, i think the general consensus is most people don't want or need a new sony console just yet. sony should wait a few more years and release ps5 instead. however, microsoft is desperate and has no choice but to release scorpio next year. they are losing market share by the day, after all. that being said, it doesn't sound like 4k is in high demand. people want good games, not higher, meaningless specs. people will remain skeptical up until these consoles release i suppose.

@thomasn7: i'm sure devs are beginning to at least think about it if microsoft has had meetings with them. highly doubt they would be very interested if not for the push, though. all it does is create more work for them and complicates their workflow. i don't think many devs want to be cutting edge seeing as AAA gaming is already a very high risk endeavour as it is. they need to focus on other areas of production first before the medium can mature... such as animation, motion capture, character modeling, larger crowds, better lighting and shadows, physics, ai, etc (with the exception of a few special developers, these aspects are lacking in many games)... a useless resolution increase is absolutely the last thing we need right now.

If you shell out what will be alot for one of these Neo or scorpio machines, you can be sure, in another short few years another even more expensive one is coming. Or they start pumping new machines out like the I phone. Is this really what console players want? If you buy a neo or scorpio you are giving them the signal that it's okay and you want more of that. 40 million plus gamers deserve better.

And the console is screwed no matter what happens. Thanks to microsoft having the ability to take a hit on the scorpio which they will sell at a loss. Sony cannot and will not take a hit on any console because they simply can't afford to.

@blackamerica: Yes Microsoft can take a hit, and still win. They are out to kill the console business, by forcing sony into playing the game their way. They are pushing new tech out sooner with high specs, as they know sony will have to sell at a high price. People will be peed off and say to hell with sony, microsoft will also come out overpriced and will pee off the masses. They will eventually make a statement resigning from consoles, but reassuring the xbox brand lives on in PC gaming. Turning loads onto windows 10 and xbox on PC.Then the PC guys will be in bother because next they will target steam. Microsoft are a behemoth that are about to kill console gaming if we all let them.

@bigbadcrawford: Microsoft isn't out to kill console that bullshit there is just too funny. However they are going to force sony's hand eventually i agree. Sony sold off it's computer chapter and Microsoft is now building computers and other hardware now. The xbox brand will eventually put sony in a spot that they probably can't compete in sooner or later i agree. sony is brand that has been at it for a really long time but the company is still cash strapped in a lot of areas where Microsoft can and will shift product placement were it needs to be. Microsoft and windows 10 is a danger to and i think they that they know it at this point. I can see the console as we know it now transforming into a computer format that Microsoft will eventually take controlling stake on. the closer the consoles become to computer the more danger sony is in as they are pretty much out the game at this point.

@blackamerica: MS may take a hit, but Sony doesn't need to. They've made a profit on ever ps4 sold so far. The xbox division has taken a loss on every xbox one sold. Sony has been in the hardware business way longer than MS. And this is clearly shown in the ps4. It's smaller, more efficient, more powerful and they still are making profit. The neo will probably be priced at $400, scorpio at $600.

I mostly like PS4 exclusives. The only Xbox exclusive I ever liked was Gears of War. I'm also pretty happy with 1080p. I'll probably get a NEO if it's fairly cheap, but I wonder how much more heat these video cards will generate and how much more power the consoles will consume.

It will all depend on the performance difference. If NEO can do 1080p @60fps / have better anti aliasing, better lighting more like PC, many people will justify the upgrade. Only time will tell.

@ramtracker42: I don't think the "if" needs to be there. It's only twice the power of ps4, which struggles sometimes with that res and fps, but I can't see how neo will have any problem, plus better lighting, graphics effects etc.
