More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

No Caption Provided

Sony's Andrew House confirmed Neo just days before E3, at the time also mentioning that it would not be discussed at the event. For its part, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio during its briefing, a system the company describes as "the most powerful console ever made."

Scorpio, which features 6 teraflops of performance, is scheduled to come out in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced for the Neo or Scorpio; in both cases, the games that work on PS4 and Xbox One today will also be supported on the new systems.

If Neo is indeed coming out this year, some possible, but not confirmed, venues for Neo's official announcement might include Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or Paris Games Week. It might also be that Sony hosts a dedicated event for the unveiling, as it did for the PS4.

How come now it's the general consensus that PS4 games look like low settings on a midrange PC? I see this in the comments section quite often now. Have these people seen Uncharted 4? Driveclub? The Order? Until Dawn?... You don't want exclusives here? OK, Battlefront then. Even DF agrees it looks like high presets in most departments.

Where did all this nonsense come from... is there a Save the Neo squad out there, maybe?

@radiotoxic:

If you read and believe most comparisons of games that are on both the PS4 and PC then most of the reviewers say the settings are mid to low vs a PC.

I'm curious what type/size TV you are using compared to the PC monitor. Even a 1440 monitor looks a LOT better than 1080p TV.

@haze0986:

They look simliar, but you can see a big difference between say PC with high to ultra settings and PS4 if you play a game like the Witcher 3. One looks almost real and the other looks more like a cartoon with bright colors.

I don't really care either way, but there is a difference. I still mostly play on PS4 because I like the controller and enjoy being able to relax in a comfortable position using a controller. I could do the same with a PC, but it would be more convoluted.

Having the best graphics isn't always essential. I also care about weather the comfort, heat generation, power usage, ease of use, and anything else that adds to the enjoyment of playing games.

Makes sense if you take into consideration the PS VR is releasing this fall and I might be wrong but wasn't there a rumor going around that the PS VR struggled to keep a stable frame rate with some of it's VR games? I mean, it's pretty obviously that the current iteration of the PS4 just doesn't cut it, spec wise for something like Final Fantasy XV VR or Resident Evil VII VR.

I really wanted Sony to pull back on releasing the PS VR this year because of that concern; but now it may bite them in a*s for overestimating not only the market for VR but also the power of the base PS4 and what it may be able to handle with steady frame rate consistency.

Sony: This is what I hope and I think will happen. 4K = NO WAY. The amount of power/price needed for that is just too great.

Instead PS4 Neo will be an updated PS4 capable of running games with High fidelity, HDR, and Dynamic scaling in 1080P 60fps. So think of every game now out that would look better like on a PC on mid settings instead of low settings.

This would take the chips and shrink them as Microsoft has already done but add the power from the shrinkage with a few more Cuda cores and increase MHz boos as Microsoft did with XB1, PS4 MAY increase from 800MHz to 900MHz with an additional increas in cpu speed. as chips shrink their heat packages become lower thus these increases will cost Sony nothing though overall a little extra Heat management may be necessary.

SO Neo would be a inexpensive PS4 as Sony sells/depletes its (discounted) PS4s on store shelves and warehouses. IT would be A LOT less powerful than Xbox 1 Scorpio But a lot cheaper for people who want a better looking game, like games on PC play the same (with better visuals).

@Ravenlore_basic: You think Sony would put out such a mediocre upgrade to the hardware? I dunno, I think if they intended to do a mid cycle upgrade for the system it would be something enticing for both new and old PS4 users to purchase. Not just a slightly better sku thats inexpensive. House has already said that the Neo is for the "hardcore gamers" (or something like that) that want to get the most out of their games.

@Ravenlore_basic: games on ps4 already look as good as mid range PCs. Uncharted 4 looks absolutely insane. Metro Last Light and 2033 look as good as PC counterparts and steady 60 fps easy. PC master race will never let in that's fine. They can spend $2k+ on PC every few years and think living in their moms basement is elite.

@heydink: Well, deluded one, Doom says (let the application decide settings) that my mid-range PC can run its texture filtering on Ultra, with 4X EQAA, and 8X Anisotropic Filtering (60+ fps). I could take it higher, but don't want to spend the performance cost. I doubt your PS4 can produce visuals that look as good as that...no, I know it can't. All in all, I didn't even spend half of the ridiculous cost you are suggesting. PS4 is still a good machine, as is XB1- but, while Uncharted looks phenomenal on PS4- it would look insane on PC. Neo will not be the answer to beating PC either. All Neo will do is put PS4 back to the level of low mid pc. Also, I don't live in my Mom's Basement, WIlliam Shatner. I'm an IT Professional and I own my own property.

@joshrmeyer: The cost of my setup is irrelevant to the ludicrous claim by the poster I replied to, who wrote, "games on ps4 already look as good as mid range PCs." I was just making a point to dispel the inaccuracy of such a technology ignorant assertion. And as you say, "everybody knows the more you spend, the more you get, " well, judging by the foolish comment I replied to- apparently, "everybody" does NOT know. All you have to do is read some of the drivel in this thread to know that.

@heydink: You have no idea do you. PC games look a hell of a lot better on low end PCs, never mind mid range ones. Nobody spends $2k every few years, most people invest $500-1000 one time and then 3-4 years might decide to spend $300-500 on a new GPU, its flexible upgrades. There are people still running the GTX 500 series which still run games at 1080p/60fps on medium settings.

@Cubly: I don't know what base system you're quoting for $500-$1000, but that won't play games better than a PS4. When I was a PC gamer, my base system would be around $2000. I could never wait 3-5 years for upgrades either. Every Black Friday, it was a new processor, mobo, RAM, and video card. The only thing that I could keep for 3-5 years was the case and hard drives.

@psn_m1nat3k: Not really the case anymore. Upgrading your mobo/RAM/CPU doesn't really get you that much if we are just talking performance for a gaming rig. In the past I would agree but now, not so much. The GPU is the best bang for the buck and the majority these days hold on to their mobo/RAM/CPU combos and just upgrade the GPU every couple generations/iterations.

As an FYI, I just built a system on newegg for giggles and using their super DIY combos with an i5 skylake CPU (everything needed even case) with an GTX 980ti.......$917. Not the cream of the crop parts for mobo/CPU/RAM but it would smoke a PS4. You can even make it cheaper buy going with a lower GPU that would still beat out the PS4. Without the GPU...the system is $450.

Even with all that said, the PS4 itself is a great bang for the buck for what it delivers. I have been happy with it (purchased launch day) and game on it weekly.

@saganage: You probably could, if you were selling to folks without the know how to build one. I used to do just that myself back in the early 2000's but got out of it because it was an absolute time suck and not worth the little money that you got in profits. Also I turned into their personal tech support when they had any issues with software or hardware, which was another time suck but I felt obligated since I built their system. Not to mention you had better have a volume OS license too. Nowadays I just turn those folks to the cheap " PC boxes" sold at the big box stores and what specs to look for and wash my hands of it. I spend enough time working on my own rig. :)

@mantiis: Yeah he is right but most PC enthusiast aren't going to be spending that. Hell my skylake build cost me $900 alone for the mobo/RAM/CPU but that is for high end enthusiast components. If someone didn't have the scratch and working with a budget and wanted to get their feet wet in PC gaming...they can build a decent gaming machine for under $1k (or buy a Steam box for even cheaper) that would outperform a PS4. I dont see where you are gonna build a PC that can do what the PS4 does for $300.

@Cubly: name a game that looks as good as Uncharted 4 on a low end PC?

You just spew PC elitism bs, I have a friend with $2000 PC (gtx 980 I think)... Nothing looks insanely better. Witcher 3 has some nice extra effects but overall it looks pretty close to ps4, but can sustain 60 fps. I'm not a framerate whore especially with SP. Witcher 3 runs just fine on my ps4 and looks nearly identical on my friends PC with little extra detail to lightning and slightly better draw distances/aliasing. Hardly noticeable tho and definitely not worth the extra $1-1.5k price.

Overwatch on PS4 runs butter smooth 60 fps not a damn hiccup in my 20+ hours. Saw it on my friends with max settings. Again I notice a slight difference mostly with aliasing and lighting, and slightly higher resolution.. But again, nothing significant at all that'd justify the extra cost. Not even close to being a fkn difference. PC elitist will be elite

@heydink: Are you brainwashed? Loads of well optimised games look and run beautifully on low end PCs. 60fps isn't really butter smooth. Gamers on PC use higher FOV settings than on consoles, mainly 85-100, so there is more on the screen at a time, most console games are locked at 60-70 degrees, so you can squeeze more performance out of them. It's not being elitist. I don't care what platform people on, I respect their choice, but when people spew out ridiculously false claims it's very ignorant.

@julianboxe: Console gamers don't live in their moms basement... At least for the last 20 years or so, the console gamers are the social ones that play in the living room. It's the PC gamers that tend to set up shop in the basement for whatever reason (maybe it helps cool their system down).

The lighting, the foliage, character amount, frames 2560/1440p, nvidia hairworks etc etc. your friend doesn't know how to optimize his pc if it doesnt look and play better than your ps4. I owned the witcher 3 on console before PC and its a huge step up. I love my consoles and will be getting both Scorpio and Neo but will also be getting a GTX 1080. There are tons of great games on PC, ones that are never mentioned on these websites. Hidden indie games that are just awesome. I just love gaming

To me the Witcher 3 looks a lot different. The game almost looks real on PC due to shadows I believe. Everything is darker. I like how PS4 games look though. I can play games on either platform. We have hit the point of diminishing returns when it comes to graphics and effects. As long as the game is fun that is whats most important. Uncharted 4 is a great game IMO.

@skiggy34: 6 tflops in a PC isn't much to brag about, especially in 18 months. I believe a $600 system could achieve this now, and in 18 months, probably double that. I'm amazed at how cheap GPUs are getting now. I'm a console gamers, but with the way prices are going for PC, I think I might just buy one in a few years.

@crxuchilbara: Consoles will never close the gap. Lol thats just a completely false statement. By the time Scorpio launches next year, an entire new line of CPU's and GPU's will be out for PC. Consoles are made to be cheap, and the way they stay cheap is by using older hardware. I'm sorry, but you're wrong on that end bud.
