More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

No Caption Provided

Sony's Andrew House confirmed Neo just days before E3, at the time also mentioning that it would not be discussed at the event. For its part, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio during its briefing, a system the company describes as "the most powerful console ever made."

Scorpio, which features 6 teraflops of performance, is scheduled to come out in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced for the Neo or Scorpio; in both cases, the games that work on PS4 and Xbox One today will also be supported on the new systems.

If Neo is indeed coming out this year, some possible, but not confirmed, venues for Neo's official announcement might include Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or Paris Games Week. It might also be that Sony hosts a dedicated event for the unveiling, as it did for the PS4.

Is Eddie troIIing?

A Sony rep already stated Neos primary function is for 4K set-ups and VR, otherwise will function in a similar manner to a regular PS4. If you want a stronger machine wait for the Scorpio, or buy a better P.C.

It might surprise many casual fanbois, but the PS4 doesn't need an overhaul. Not for awhile anyway.

Does it play games better than a good P.C.? No.

But surprise! Neither did a PS2 or PS3. In fact the PS2 was considerably weaker than a GC and XB. And PS3 was, in some regards, a developers nightmare.

Just play and enjoys games

@RSM-HQ: Ya the Cell processor in the PS3 was claimed by Sony to "Revolutionize Games" Turned out to be a nightmare to make games on. Luckily they figured it out and PS3 ended up being successful.

I'm hoping this is a 1080p console. 4K is premature. Not to mention very likely to be expensive.

Consoles right now already have issues at 900 - 1080p. Long load times, frame rate drops, texture pop-in etc etc. Get 1080p right first otherwise all they will really do is transfer all of the issues they have now to the 4K machine.

60fps should be the standard, as should anti-aliasing in my opinion.

What is the point in giving us a 4K console if it will just run all games at 25 - 30fps? I'll take 1080p and 60fps over 4K. Hell I'll take 45 fps and screen tearing over 4K right now.

Eventually console upgrades will be more prevalent than the number of patches it takes to fix an EA game

No way are they upgrading now then, so confirmed it will be significantly underpowered compared to Scorpio. No wonder Sony chickened out of showing it at e3. Cluck cluck

Everyone seems to be going on about how powerful the Scorpio is. Whilst it's true that the Scorpio is shaping up to be significantly more powerful than the Neo, you have to remember how demanding 4K is. This means that Scorpio games will probably look and run the same as Xbox One games. The only difference will be the resolution, and so the Scorpio will be useless to anyone without a 4K TV.

Here's a quote from Phil Spencer: “Scorpio is designed as a 4K console, and if you don’t have a 4K TV, the benefit we’ve designed for, you’re not going to see. Clearly, you can buy Scorpio, and if and when you decide you want to buy a 4K television to take advantage of the increased performance, obviously the console will be ready for you.”

Personally, I'm hoping that Sony uses the Neo's power for better graphics and higher framerates which seems likely as the leaked specs don't seem good enough for native 4K output on modern games, and none of the leaks have mentioned games outputting at 4K. If this is the case, then I'll certainly consider buying a Neo as I'd take 1080P 60fps with better graphical effects over 4K 30fps any day of the week. As it stands, I have no interest in Scorpio due to its focus on 4K.

@covertbanana: he also said its up to the developers. Microsoft is not forcing 4K on them but it's an option. I think Microsoft is trying to play it a little cool not to over shadow the slim completely this year

@covertbanana: To get the best out of graphic fidelity, then yes. Phil is correct on that. However the spec on the scorpio is by no means restricted like the Xbone original is. A lot of watering down will be made for the original Xbone games. If you know what I mean by that.

@covertbanana: 4k resolution is no good without a 4k monitor, OK got it! Thanks for the update. And you don't like better resolution, which is part of better graphics. Can the Scorpion do 1080p 60fps, why yes, yes I think it can. You live in a fanBOY bubble void of intelligence.

@johnholmes: WRONG.....4k looks better on anything including 720p screens.......to be blunt you dont need the 4k screen to see 4k......if what i said was not true their would be nothing to nvidia cards rendering in 4k but outputting to a 1080p screen......google "nvidia rendering at 4k on a 1080p screen"......to be blunt if you could calibrate a 1080p screen and feed it 4k content you would never need a 4k screen......

@johnholmes: A very small part of graphics. If a game is designed with 1080p in mind and upscaled to 4K it won't make a single bit of difference because the textures and graphics settings used will already be displayed at their maximum at 1080p.

Final Fantasy VII remastered to 1080p for example still looks like ass because the textures and polygons are exactly the same as the ones they used on PS1. So much so the 1080p version actually looks worse because you can see how blatantly out of date all of the visuals are contrasted against the pre-rendered backgrounds.

Which is likely to be exactly what the devs do. Why make two versions of the game at expense to themselves when you can make one version and just output it at two different resolutions? At which point 4K will look slightly clearer and nothing more.

@johnholmes: I think what he was saying is that if you don't own a 4k tv, the games on both systems will be the same., 1080p 60fps. And it doesn't sound like that extra power scorpio uses is for anything other than 4k and games that use dynamic scaling resolution. Phils words, not mine.

@cboye18: I doubt Sony is going to wait 3 years after scorpio is released to relate the ps5. I'd say in 2019 at the latest. That'll give the ps4 a 3 year life span and the neo a 3 year span. Tech is advancing too fast now to have the regular 6 year life span. I don't mind upgrading every 3 years for less than $400. It's the PC way but on a closed system.

Looks to me like MS won this battle. It looks really shady that Sony is launching a console this year and still not announce it at E3. It shows they were afraid of the Scorpio announcement. Maybe I'm just cynical but that is what it looks like to me. Because the first question Sony would have been asked is how powerful is it.

@bunchanumbers: I don't think the plan was say anything other than what they did. They might either do it at another show or hold a special event much like they did with the PS4. Remember that was announced in a separate event from E3. Why be afraid when you are selling more consoles now.

@bunchanumbers: None is winning this battle, only PC. Both companies are destroying the concept of console gaming and leave us consumers confused in what to buy next. Is the Scorpio even a next-gen console or just a semi-upgrade?

Besides, the console wars will now excacerbate into flame wars within the same brand. It's a confusing mess with the Neo and Scorpio and it's only going to make PC gaming more viable.

@cboye18: Traditional console gaming was destroyed during the 360/ps3 generation when they started adding hard drives and made it so they could patch games and started selling DLC post launch. Not to mention installing games to the hard drive. Simple insert the game and play the game that has been the hallmark of console gaming has been dead for a decade.

MS made xbox a part of the W10 ecosystem. Play Anywhere is another sign that traditional console gaming has been dead for a while now. MS is just evolving with the times and this is just showing that Sony is left behind again. A simple hardware upgrade like Neo isn't gonna serve any purpose.

@cboye18: Maybe that's MS's plan. They are making Xbox and Windows PC part of the same ecosystem and so once consoles become pretty much mass produced PC's, they can just stop making expensive hardware some years down the line and concentrate on selling software and services. Whereas Sony will have to continue making hardware if only just a dumb terminal to stream to. Who knows what their long term game plan is.

It's pretty weird to launch a console and not have it at the E3 event the year it comes out.

Both MS and Sony will sell you consoles that will be within +/-5% power of each other. The tech will be old by the time you can buy it, and the consoles will be overpriced. They won't do 4k60 with actual games despite being advertised as such for the next 18 months.

People argue about the power difference between PS4 and XBO because everyone assumed that 1080p was going to be a given for every game. When PS4 began doing that more regular than XBO, it became a tangible difference between the two consoles.

When I think of Neo and Scorpio trying to do 4K gaming, it's like the PS3 and XB360 trying to do 1080p. Which is even more crazy to think when you realize how PS4 and XBO sometimes struggle to hit 1080p.

Scorpio will be powerful, but at the low end for 4K gaming. Neo; even further behind. Scorpio is going to serve an enthusiast market. Same as the XBO Elite controller. Same as the PSVR, Rift and Vive.

Neither Scorpio or Neo have to sell in volumes like PS4 and XBO. Because these older versions will be selling very fast with lower price points.

MS and Sony have to justify these new consoles with software. Sony has PSVR lined up and E3 was a showcase for that. MS hasn't really given much reason for the masses to upgrade/switch to Scorpio. That's their challenge. Sony can justify Neo with PSVR alone (even though it works on regular PS4 too). However, if they want to move units, they will have to have a comparably lower price than Scorpio and keep the software coming (exclusive or not).

MS typically shove $$$$ towards exclusive games and content. I expect them to use these tools again to push Scorpio. Though I don't like to be bullied into a console through exclusive buyouts of 3rd party games.

@Hvac0120: low end 4K is a huge jump from what either console can currently do since they both can struggle with 1080 and 60 fps now.

I think the incentive that Xbox Scorpio will have will be the Windows 10 ecosystem. They are already bringing kb/m support to Xbox and have announced that all games going forward will be on both windows 10 and Xbox. With them losening up deals with oculus and valve, there's a good probability that Scorpio will start getting games that used to be PC only since for all intensive purposes it will be like a mid ranged gaming PC when it launches. The river will flow both ways and eventually I see Xbox just becoming a branded MS gaming PC.

@oflow: Windows 10 is still up to the developer. All 1st party games and paid-for exclusives will be on both because MS has the control.

All we can do for Scorpio at this time is speculate the possibilities. We're all just spectators waiting for the players to lay down their cards... And it's a slow game right now. We'll see how long MS holds out on specifics. I'm sure we'll get official news bits here and there to make sure we're still paying attention.
