More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

1070 Comments

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

No Caption Provided

Sony's Andrew House confirmed Neo just days before E3, at the time also mentioning that it would not be discussed at the event. For its part, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio during its briefing, a system the company describes as "the most powerful console ever made."

Scorpio, which features 6 teraflops of performance, is scheduled to come out in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced for the Neo or Scorpio; in both cases, the games that work on PS4 and Xbox One today will also be supported on the new systems.

If Neo is indeed coming out this year, some possible, but not confirmed, venues for Neo's official announcement might include Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or Paris Games Week. It might also be that Sony hosts a dedicated event for the unveiling, as it did for the PS4.

Microsoft is launching their Neo competitor this year with the XBO S, which received a nice performance boost along with its redesign.

Scorpio will release in 2017 (if everything goes as planned) and Sony will still be on the Neo cycle. But Sony isn't sitting out and letting Microsoft totally rule the generational leap. The PS5 will be launched in 2018-2019 to compete.

Nintendo is keeping its trailing end of performance in launching the NX in 2017. People will compare it to Scorpio and that's not the audience NX is focused on. It'll be interesting to see where the NX's performance lies between PS4 Neo and Scorpio. Or if it's going to fall further behind by being more comparable to PS4/XBO.

@Hvac0120: Sony is switching to 3 year refresh cycles, PS5 at the end of 2019 will play 4K games at 60 fps without breaking a sweat.

The fact that Sony is downplaying this whole upgraded console thing pretty much solidifies that its going to be minimal upgrade at best. Perhaps upscaled to 4K or perhaps bigger and faster hardrives. I, for one, would love and upgraded controller with a longer battery life.

@ Why -- why are we ending this generation so early when the PS4 is selling like bonkers and even the Xbone is selling faster than the 360 did? What the hell is wrong with you kids these days? ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED?!?!

@chippiez: Using 'end of generation' to characterise consoles that play every single game released on the current generation seems kind of dramatic and disingenuous. Maybe if Neo and Scorpio 'locked out' access to certain games compared to PS4/Xbox One you'd have a point, but that's not happening. Thus rendering the question, "Do I upgrade?" into a 100% personal choice, and nothing that's being forced upon you.

If the Neo launches in 2016, there's a big chance that the spec rumors were true, and that this thing will be a joke when Scorpio launches in 2017 (well, this entire business model is a joke itself, removing the last major "pro" consoles had over PCs). The only other alternative is that the Neo is a beast under the hood but will cost too much and bust after the initial hype. Those are my thoughts anyway, I am curious how all this will play out in the end.

@VAJoiner: I would argue that the last major pro still exists, and that's console exclusives from the very best 1st/2nd party studios. The games and franchises from extremely talented studios that won't be multiplatform.

Although it's beginning to look like you can scratch that itch in Microsoft's ecosystem by playing every major upcoming game via the Windows 10 version on PC.

You could almost get away with gradually upgrading your PC over the next year until it's post-Scorpio power (not difficult by holiday 2017) and grabbing the less expensive Neo for the PS exclusives and UHD media playback.

@redknightoh5:

That's not really true. The PS4 has already hit it's limits from a graphical perspective. The Neo will help to stabilize games that are dipping in FPS making the image lag a bit. I am pretty happy with the original PS4, but I am not opposed to buying an upgraded version. I believe the Xbox 360 and PS3 also went through some hardware upgrades in newer models. It would be a good thing to do away with generations of consoles and instead just upgrade the hardware once in a while. Who wants to buy games they already brought with remasters or have to have multiple consoles hooked up?

I don't believe that. "Several sources" is basically no sources at all. Name the sources and then we'll talk.

Well, the most powerful console ever made is pretty much a PC. I don't think Microsoft thinks consoles are something to stay, their mentality is instead shifted towards unified systems and platforms.

We're witnessing the beginning of the end of the console era.

I'm fairly certain that a console lifespan of only 4 years will be the end of the console era.

@Hellcanwait: 32X and Neptune would have liked to see things your way as well.

Plug your NES -providing your recent TV system can handle those pixels- and slap up Contra on it.
Try to do the same with a Pentium and Blizzard's Blackthorne.

Tell me later which took more time to enjoy, and felt more rewarding.
And try to use a chronometer to be absolutely fair on the resulting analysis.

@joshrmeyer:

Sega Neptune

The Sega Neptune was a two-in-one Genesis and 32X console which Sega planned to release in fall 1995, with the retail price planned to be something less than US$200.The Neptune was delayed into 1996, then canceled altogether with the discontinuation of 32X production.

@Hellcanwait: Then you're delusional. Consoles will be around for decades to come, even if they wrap up PC hardware in a console shell and label it a 'console' it's still a console and they will be around for ages. The reason for that is because they're too convenient to simply brush under the carpet.

I think Hellcanwait is just pointing out that the run so far for the "next-Gen consoles" has not been very "next Gen" at all... Hardly any library of games and the extremely short amount of lifespan for these current console units leading to the apparent announcement of 2, what are they exactly?... upgraded systems?! It just sounds like what Sony did with the PSP and all of that silliness (never bought one, and don't regret it...) I don't know enough about these newer, upgraded consoles, yet... but I'm very curious as to why Microsoft and Sony thought that this was necessary since neither machine has even hit the 5 year mark, yet...

@Hellcanwait:

4 years how excactly? The original PS4 has been out almost 3 years and will have the same games, and live as long as the new improved version which you can rest assured is not replaced by a new generation next year. It changes nothing, it's merely an option. If it alters the lifespan of the generation in any way it'll be a longer one in all likelihood.

I think Playstation 4 Neo was made for better VR experience. Also, it will fight against Xbox One S. The upcoming console of PS (maybe PS5) will be against Xbox Scorpio for sure.

@ihatesonyHave you looked at sales figures lately? So then who, really, needs to play catch up?

Besides, anyone paying attention knows that MS isn't out to win console wars anymore. You have to think of Xbox as a platform service now, not simply as yet another games console. It's just another device to help push Windows 10 and Xbox Live.

Ultimately, Scorpio is their Windows 10 set top box. Their Steambox. The Xbox One was intended to be this vessel, but it simply lacked the muscle to stay long term, as Microsoft's Windows 10/UWP strategy evolved.

Now they'll have their vessel for that UWP roadmap. It's all about countering loss on hardware with profit on software and service platforms, placing a Windows 10/store entity in the living room for general consumers lacking the know-how or interest to assemble a HTPC Win 10 solution.

Despite the battle cry for 'end of generations' and 'Play Anywhere' this is decidedly a plan to expand the walled garden of Xbox Live, Windows 10, UWP, and associated platform services.

The Scorpio will be a new steam machine like "video game console" with a PC architecture. Microsoft id making new move trying to get a chunk of the pc gamers market dominated by steam, origin, gog and etc with its UWP strategy or the well know Xbox Play Anywhere since the Win10 is more like a service than a SO...

These new "PC-Like" consoles are just the manufactures way of taking cut of the advantage and lure of PC gaming, without, all the while, never achieving its pinnacle. Still, they will be nice for 1st party exclusives.

You really should. The full experience is not translated in videos.

That said, make sure you try the "real" PREMIUM VR for the best experience. (Oculus or Vive) Don't get a bad first impression with something cheap like Samsung Gear VR.

I have interest actually cause my Gaming PC is doing horribly at 2.4 TFLOPS and I don't feel like it's the right time to upgrade when there is newer consoles coming with upgraded specs though I'm not totally sold into this idea of mid-cycle upgrade yet cause the newer consoles are supposed to perform better out of the box just like any gaming PCs or at least we expect a downloadable batches for older games.
