More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

No Caption Provided

Sony's Andrew House confirmed Neo just days before E3, at the time also mentioning that it would not be discussed at the event. For its part, Microsoft announced Project Scorpio during its briefing, a system the company describes as "the most powerful console ever made."

Scorpio, which features 6 teraflops of performance, is scheduled to come out in holiday 2017. Pricing has not been announced for the Neo or Scorpio; in both cases, the games that work on PS4 and Xbox One today will also be supported on the new systems.

If Neo is indeed coming out this year, some possible, but not confirmed, venues for Neo's official announcement might include Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, or Paris Games Week. It might also be that Sony hosts a dedicated event for the unveiling, as it did for the PS4.

I'm calling it gs is retarded and ps neo doesn't come out until early to summer next year. They haven't even revealed it yet and doubt tgs pgw is the place they reveal. Even if they reveal it at psx history shows companies will never reveal a console and release that month.

I worry this is a little premature. With a year to prepare, Microsoft is going to have everything it needs to completely make whatever Sony puts out obsolete from a technical standpoint.

@saganage: It really won't matter, it is sales that will win out and by the time MS puts its update out Sony will be so far ahead it won't matter.

VR is a fad that will pass and 4K gaming requires a more powerful system to run at a steady framerate than a $400 console will provide. However, if this new console lets games like Bloodborne or the regular PS4 games run with a more steady framerate at 1080p I might consider it.

@playstationzone: i did not read anything about Sony stating that it will run 4K games. I just do not think it will nor do I think that it would be a wise decision. 4K would take ALL the power and frame rate would fall and visuals would suffer. just so its clearer. 1080P @ 60fps with HDR, High fidelity visuals would look better than a sharper visual that for me is difficult to differentiate.

@Ravenlore_basic: Yes with the Neo's specs I agree. i cant see gaming anywhere near 4k @ 30fps with a 2.1Ghz cpu. I dont think it's remotely possible, even if the gpu has the juice you will still bottleneck. I am interested to see what this Scorpio has under it's hood..

@Ravenlore_basic: That's just it, they never said the neo will be for 4K gaming, just 4K output with a 4k UHD BR player, that's it. They are pretty much just upping the horsepower a bit for the VR unit is all and making sure games run at a full 1080p/60fps.

I personally don't care about 4k as I do not have a 4K TV and don't plan on buying one anytime soon. I will be buying a Neo when it come out though.

The wife wants her own PS4, and what kind of gamer husband would I be if I didn't comply with our similar interests? :-)

@rmiller365: I don't get all this talk about 4K gaming either. Gaming seems like a tool that Television Companies are trying to exploit to get us to buy 4K TV's. 4K TV's are the minority and will stay that way until they come down to 1080P price..for me at least.

I don't think this is going to work out well for Sony. I don't think people are ready for a new console. They're going to bring out a weaker console now instead of waiting a year and bringing out a more powerful one. I know they are doing it because of PSVR, but I think they are giving Microsoft a chance to win people back here.

@AntiHaloist: They are doing it to prevent embarrassing themselves and to preserve their brand when people are subjected to stuttering rates of frame for playing VR with their standard PS4.

@AntiHaloist: I just do not think there are that many people with 4K tvs. 1080P TVs have only been out for a few years and they are inexpensive and plentiful. compared to 4K. If Sony is able to upgrade to a point that its noticeable better for little more than a PS4 now ~$350 - $400. Then it will be great.

@Ravenlore_basic: "1080p sets have only been out for a few years" What?! That's not true. I bought my first 42" 1080i set back in 2003 or 4 and followed up with a Samsung DLP 65" 1080p set in 2006-7. 1080p sets have been around for a decade or so. 4k sets are actually getting pretty affordable. 4k TV's can be found for under $1k in a decent sized screen for a no frills set. They will take over just as other formats have in the past going from 480p>1080i/720p>1080p as more and more purchase them. I just actually jumped on the 4k bandwagon with a 80" set myself. Unfortunate there is not a ton of content and I have to use streaming services if I want native 4k content. History of TV tech adoption....rinse, repeat.

@mobius_basic: Not a bad price. But as you alluded to, "a decent size" screen is probably not going to net you one for 1k. What is the price of a 60"?

@mantiis: You can purchase 4k 55" Sammys for around $850, just check out Best buy for example....you'll see them. I consider that a decent size screen. Keep in mind, like I said these are more budget sets and will not have all the features or the processor of the higher end models. There is a reason for the lower price ;), higher input lag, no HDR support, could have more pronounced motion blur or gray uniformity, no local dimming etc. The bottom line is the sets are coming way down in price compared to a year or so ago. If you do your research you can net a good 4k TV with the features and performance that you need without breaking the bank. As with anything you can go for bottom end, middle of the ground or all out. The fact is a decent middle ground set can be had for an affordable price.

@splinterscott: Your save data is also in PSN if you have PS Plus. You can download it from your cloud on the new system. But also, you can easily save game data to a jump drive and load it onto a new system.

@splinterscott: you shouldn't have an issue. When I upgraded my hard drive for my PS4 I was able to take everything for my old HDD to my new one easily. Just save download the cloud saves. All trophies carried over to my ps4 from the ps3 so there wouldn't be an issue there either.

@splinterscott: Your achievements data is stored on PSN, it will sync over. As far as your save data, if you have PSN+ it should also sync over, as long as you saved it on the PSN cloud. If not, you should be able to copy it over from a flash drive (and if PS4 can't do that, its a shame- because PS3 can).

@covenantofdemos: Your anger is completely subjective to your own desire for superior hardware advances. After all, every single PS4 Neo game will also be available on that same PS4 you currently own. All of them. No element of the Neo's existence obligates you to buy it. It's just a personal decision. You're not denied or "locked out" any games whatsoever.

Only with PSVR games are you obligated to buy a new piece of hardware to experience VR games, and that too is a purely optional decision.

It might make you angry, but it doesn't change the reality of the situation.

Teraflops are an okay spec for performance, but also can be misleading.

For instance, the R9-290X, and 980-TI both do about 6 Teraflops, but in most situations the 980TI runs games 50-100% better.

I'll be very interested to see what it has though.

Will be interested to see if Sony bumps up the Neo's specs to match the Scopio. 1 yr head start is big and if the NEO an deliver a smoother, crisper, better lighting experience I think it will do very well. Not sure why so many people complaining about the NEO, if you don't want to upgrade, you still get all the games the upgrade offers.

@ramtracker42: yes all the unoptimised crud versions of games. Its also extremely naive if you believe that they won't do NEO only at some point. People who bought their consoles deserve more respect and deserve better.

@ramtracker42: it's impossible. The hardware in the Scorpio doesn't even enter manufacturing on the PC side until late this year, and it's the reason MS went for Holiday 2017 date - so the parts can mature, shrink, refine manufacture chip yields, etc.

Neo completely misses (or pre-empts) the window on that hardware even becoming available for use in console, let alone PC.

On the other hand, Sony can bump the clock frequency on the GPU and CPU and *maybe* opt for a new RAM format - but that's about it.

Still, if it gets them up to 5TFlops they're still 'in the game' so to speak, especially with a year headstart and still a very healthy lead in the market with PS4. They don't have to worry about the situation for a while.

If it is this year it just means its weaker than Scorpio and Sony just wants to try cashing in before it launches.

I still don't see PS VR / Neo doing to well for Sony, of all companies to push out new things this seems like a bad idea, unless they are improving as a whole XD
